samsung galaxy s4 lte and non lte update OTA

Anthony Muzonzini
Anthony Muzonzini Currently living out in the East Coast. When not on the AndroidPIT grind you can usually find me turning up or play footie.
The most successful Android phone maker is now pushing a new Android 4.4.2 update to the. The LTE compatible version of the phone is powered by a Snapdragon 600 processor so if you have this version then you should be on the lookout for the update notification in your notification tray in the near future.
samsung galaxy s4 android 4 4 2 1KitKat on the Samsung Galaxy S4 / © AndroidPIT
As with every update, this is being rolled out in phases which means that everyone won’t get it at the same time, so don’t freak out if your phone hasn’t gotten it yet. The update comes with the traditional chocolatey treats that KitKat comes with which include transparent status bars, white status bar icons, emoji supports, cloud printing and many others. You’ll also get improvements that are specific to TouchWiz such as improvements to Samsung specific apps and UI tweaks.
As soon as your device is eligible to receive the update you should get a notification message and all you need to do after that is tap on it and then follow the instructions after that. You could also go into the settings, more, about phone and then software updates to check for updates manually.
Samsung advises you to have more than 50% battery before trying to update and also to use a wi-fi connection when trying to download the update.
Have any of you received the update? Please let us know in the comments section below.

Backup and Other Important Tips

Done with the USB drivers? Perfect. The tutorial is on the next page, but first, please take a look at the following tips and important points you need to take care of. These are important, as we don’t want anyone losing their personal data or apps:
Always backup your important data that you might need after you install a new custom ROM, an official software update or anything else. Make a backup for just in case, you never know when anything might go wrong. See below for some tips on how to backup data:
Samsung users can also back up data using Samsung KIES. If you backup data manually, you get more options what to choose from and it is very easy to move data across Android devices from different manufacturers, i.e moving Samsung Galaxy Note backup data to HTC One X.
If you already have a custom recovery (ClockworkMod, TWRP etc.) installed on your phone, we strongly recommend a backup using that as it creates a complete image of your existing phone set up.
A few more optional tips that you should remember:
1. Having problems connecting your Android phone to the computer? You need to enable USB debugging mode. See here: How to Enable USB Debugging — for Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and KitKat.
2. Make sure your Android device is charged up to 80-85% battery level. This might help you: How to Check Battery Percentage. Why? Because, if your phone goes off suddenly while installing a custom ROM, flashing an official firmware update or installing mods etc. — your phone might get bricked or go dead permanently. No one wants that, right?
4. Most of the tutorials and how-to guides on Team Android are for factory unlocked Android phones and tablets. We recommend NOT to try our guides if your phone is locked to a carrier, unless we have specified the carrier name or device model.
If you find the above tips useful and they were helpful to you, please consider giving us a +1 or LIKE to thank us!
All set and ready? Good. You can now head over to the next page and update Galaxy Note 3 Neo N750S to KSU1BND3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat official firmware.

a new widget for your home screen, Hangouts update merges SMS and chats ect

Loie Favre Loie Favre is a Canadian-German, food-loving, live-music-craving globe-trotter. Coming from a humble background in the Canadian Prairies centred around nature and the Arts, she studied Translation and Languages in Edmonton. She left his home on the Pacific Coast of Canada, to seek her fortune in Berlin. She is now an Editor and Manager for AndroidPIT.com and is enjoying discovering about everything and anything under the sun about Android.
Google is gradually rolling out a new update to Hangouts (v.2.1), which will bring quite a few changes and improvements to their messenger app, since the company originally integrated SMS/MMS and Google Hangouts into one message app.
google hangouts teaser© Google
The update will be spread internationally to users in stages, while the main change that you will notice is that SMS and chat conversations are now merged. With each message to/from the same recipient, you will be able to choose the service you would like to use and be able to switch back and forth with the ease of a switch. Apparently there will also be the option to unmerge them as well. You will be able to tell the difference between an SMS and a Hangouts chat within the conversation.
What’s more, the contacts section will also get a needed makeover: it will be simplified and separated into two categories of contacts: Hangouts contacts and Phone contacts, which I think will be a lot more intuitive than the way it has been.
androidpit hangouts © GoogleThere will also be a new widget for your home screen to show you your most recent conversations, also a welcome addition instead of having to open the app every time. Finally, as with most updates, Google has improved the app’s general performance. Features such as video call quality have been improved and SMS as well as MMS should now be more reliable.
If you can’t wait to get the update, they were able to mirror the APK over at the XDA developers forum. Please download at your own caution. Otherwise, just wait a few days and you should see the update on your smartphone!

Google Hangouts update rolling out, merges SMS and Hangout conversations

hangouts-updated

Google is rolling out a new update to Hangouts today, which includes several changes such as a new feature that allows SMS and Hangouts conversations to merge together under one place for each of your contacts. There’s also simplified contact lists and much more.

To get a better idea of what’s different in the latest update, here’s a change-log noting some of the biggest changes, courtesy of Google engineer Mike Dodd:

  • Merged conversations: SMS and Hangout conversations with the same recipient are now combined into a single conversation. You can control whether you want to send a message via Hangouts or SMS with the flip of a switch, and different message types will be easy to tell apart in the conversation. Of course, you can always merge and unmerge conversations if you’d like.
  • Simplified contact list: now there’s two main sections in contacts — People you Hangout With, and Phone Contacts — making it simpler to navigate, and easier to use for SMS.
  • Homescreen widget: add the Hangouts widget to your homescreen for quick access to your recent conversations.
  • Performance improvements: today’s update includes better quality video calls, as well as improved SMS and MMS reliability.

In Google’s usual fashion, it may take a few days before the update reaches everyone — though you can always check Google Play just in case. For those that have already received the update, what do you think of the changes? Anything else worth mentioning that isn’t in the (unofficial) change-log noted above?

Samsung users can also back up data using Samsung KIES. If you backup data manually, you get more options what to choose from and it is very easy to move data across Android devices from different manufacturers, i.e moving Samsung AT&T Galaxy S3 backup data to HTC One X.

See here: How to Enable USB Debugging — for Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.

Good. Now, let’s proceed with the tutorial on the next page and update AT&T Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 to C-RoM Android 4.4.2 KitKat custom firmware.

Dolphin Browser
Dolphin Browser is one of the most powerful and popular web browsers out there and today it received a sizable update. Among the new stuff included is better Flash Player support, better full screen HTML5 videos, and the Dolphin Jetpack integration with Android 4.3 and 4.4.

Here is a quick list of all the features as per the Google Play Store.

Top 5 News: Nexus 5 vs Moto X, LG G2 KitKat update, Nexus 8 rumors

Kris Carlon

Kris Carlon

Putting down roots in Berlin after six years of traveling is a major step for Kris Carlon, who has spent more time living out of a tent lately than sitting at a desk. Kris comes to the AndroidPIT Editorial Team via a lengthy period spent writing on art and culture in Australia and other places he has lived. He joined the Android community while resurfacing in civilization back in 2010 and has never looked back, using technology to replace his actual presence in other people's lives ever since.

Lots of cool breaking news this week: a leaked LG device that looks to be a precursor to the LG G3, Google dropped a new camera for Android and Chrome Remote Desktop client, there's Tizen smartphones on the horizon, a Galaxy K launch event, Android 4.4.3 is ready to pop, we got a new responsive forum, and we got confirmation that the G3 will have a 2K display. What else has been making the headlines this week?

While Google owned Motorola there was lots of speculation about how much influence they had over the Moto X and Moto G. Motorola claim those two breakthrough devices were ''all Motorola'' but they still feel like Google to us. So which ''Google phone'' is better: the Nexus 5 or the Moto X?

Nexus5vsMotoX © AndroidPIT

The LG G2 hasn't been clean and clear where KitKat updates are concerned either. The G2 flagship has just received a small update to fix a few issues with Google Wallet's Tap & Pay and Google+. Perhaps the fact that both these bugs affect Google products is the reason behind the prompt update?

There's still no confirmation on the existence of the Nexus 8 - and therre probably won't be until it appears either in the Google Play Store or at Google I/O - but the rumors are flying. The latest has it that the Nexus 8 will replace both the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 lines, and be the sole mid-sized tablet offering from Google.

We've been pimping the crap out of all kinds of devices lately, from the old and weather-beaten to the still fresh. Somewhere in the middle of all that lies the Galaxy S4, which is hardly an old device, but one that has never felt the deep-seated love like the S3 or the new infatuation of the S5. Still, there's a few accessories out there to spruce the old dog up a little.

You Android devices are choc full of surprises, some cool but useless, others useful but boring, and some that are a mixture of the two. The Galaxy S3 has one of these features: a hidden service menu that's essentially for troubleshooting, repairing and perhaps engineering nerds. You may not ever need it, but it's cool to know it's there.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has been stuck with Android 4.3 for quite some time now, but AT&T customers will be seeing the update to Android 4.4 KitKat started today. Though the KitKat problem hasn’t been void of problems, I’m sure users will be pleased with the many perks that comes along with it.

Android 4.4. KitKat brings quite a few nice features that will soon grace the AT&T Galaxy S4 Active, Samsung’s rigorous version of the Galaxy S4. Some of these features are of course a great new and much cleaner user interface, wireless printing and more. This is a good indication that other carriers will soon push the KitKat update to their Galaxy S4 Actives.

Sony confirms May KitKat update for Xperia devices

Kris Carlon

Sony has just updated their product support pages to show very clearly that various Xperia devices will be making the jump to KitKat in May. The devices on the list are: Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Xperia Tablet Z. We already knew these devices were going to make the jump, but now it seems to be confirmed that May is indeed the month it will happen.

AndroidPIT Sony KitKatSony seems to be sticking to the schedule with their KitKat update plans. / © AndroidPIT

Of course, the update will most likely push towards the end of the month, and then you have carrier and regional delays to worry about, along with the batching process under which updates take place, so there's probably no need to start mashing that Update Now button come May Day, but at least things seem to be running on schedule.

Sony Xperia ZR UpdateBy updating their support pages with an exact month for the update, Xperia owners can rest easy. / © Sony

Sony has been quite open with their update plans of late, both positive and negative, by regularly posting lists of the devices that are either confirmed for KitKat or under investigation for the update. Several older devices have also been publicly cut from the update roster, causing many to feel left out. But in Sony's defense, it's probably better to know in advance that your device won't be getting any more updates than to sit and wait for months wondering. Better the devil you know.

Are you happy with Sony's transparent update plans? What do you think of the level of support and frequency of updates from the various OEMs?

Google stock camera app available now in Play Store [Update]

Sterling Keys

Sterling Keys

After finishing his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Alberta, Sterling made the move to Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Within a stone's throw of mountains, ocean, and complete wilderness, he mountain bikes and skis during the day and is hopelessly connected to his phone and computer at all other times. His writing "career" started as he penned about his escapades while skiing and has slowly progressed to freelance marketing and promotion throughout British Columbia. Interested in anything tech and gadget related, he has thoroughly enjoyed his transition of writing for AndroidPIT.

Google has released their official stock camera app into the Play Store as of today! Moving along to offering more stand-alone varieties of their Google branded apps, much like what they did earlier in 2013 with their Google Keyboard.

camera2The stock Google camera is now available for download via the Play Store. / © Google Play

The new stock camera app includes a new interface and some new nifty features, such as a lens blue feature and viewfinder fix that allows you to capture 100% of the photo you're taking. Thankfully, the app is not just constrained to Nexus devices and is working across different devices and manufacturers.

camera1The new blur feature in action with the stock camera app. / © Google Play

In order to be able to grab the updated app from the Play Store, you’ll need to be running an Android device with KitKat (sorry anyone not quite up to speed with Android 4.4). One of the advantages of moving towards releasing this as a stand-alone app is that Google can now roll out updates specific to their camera without having to release an OTA update for the operating system.

Also, check out the following video from the Android Police of what the camera app does if you try to take a vertical video? Thanks Google!

You can grab the new stock camera app either via the Google Play Store or by grabbing the APK file that is hosted over at Android Police.

[Update: 17 April 2014, Berlin, 4 PM]

As shown in an APK teardown by Android Police, we still haven't seen the end of the Android camera development. In the code hides some clues that point towards more functions that could be released in future updates.

One of these is the possibility to apply Photosphere photos as live wallpaper. There could also be more settings options for advanced users in areas that have lagged behind other manufacturers and that in comparison with previous versions seems to have taken a few steps backward.

Three more camera modes are also hinted at in the code: an advanced mode, a time lapse mode and a wide-angle mode. When capturing videos, a photo can also be taking while it is still rolling, a possibility that many other apps and custom ROMS already offer. According to the code, more video effects could be on their way.Three more camera modes are also hinted at in the code: an advanced mode, a time lapse mode and a wide-angle mode. In Just A Few Minutes, SpaceX Will Attempt To Launch A Reusable Rocket — Watch Now! (Update: It’s Over)

Quick! Tune in!

SpaceX is about to attempt something pretty historic: launching a rocket in such a way that much of it can be reused in later launches.

If the launch is successful, the payload of the rocket will spend a few days cruising to the International Space Station, then drop off a bunch of supplies. The “first stage”(the largest — and often the most expensive — engine component) of the rocket, meanwhile, will break away in a controlled fall back towards earth to (hopefully) be used again, with a pair of landing legs being deployed on the way down.

Even if the landing legs deploy properly, the landing is aimed for the water… which the legs can’t actually stand up on. They’ll simulate a landing to test that their landing thrusters seem to work — but in the end, it’ll just fall right into the water. This is more about testing to make sure the process works than trying to actually get this thing to make a perfect landing, but it’d still be damn neat to watch — alas, we probably won’t get to see that bit in the live stream.

I’ve embedded both NASA and SpaceX’s stream below, because each offers some pretty amazing angles and insight. If you watch both simultaneously, you probably want to mute one or the other.

Update – 12:26: The rocket launched on schedule at 12:25 p.m. pacific, and is currently en route to the ISS.

Update – 12:40: Success! Looks like everything went smoothly with the first segment of the launch. The rocket launched smoothly (despite bad weather), and will spend the next few days cruising to the ISS. As such, the stream is now over, so we’ve removed it. We’ll know in a few days if the test landing process went as smoothly.

Update – 5:00 pm: Elon Musk has tweeted to announce that the first stage has landed safely in the Atlantic.

Neither NASA nor SpaceX has put up a pre-cut video of today’s launch just yet – I’ll add it here as soon as they do. In its place, here’s a video of the Falcon 9 doing a short-distance test flight — it takes off from its launch pad, hovers for a second, and then lands itself safely a few feet away from its original location.

Android 4.4.3 update spotted a couple more times

An Android 4.4.3 update is almost certainly on the way, although we’re not quite sure when, as references to the new version of Android have cropped up yet again.

The most recent sighting comes as an Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition smartphone passed through Bluetooth SIG certification. The listing comes with a new software version for the handset labelled “KTU72.S1.3013″, the KTU72 bit is the build name for Android 4.4.3. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth listing can’t tell us when the update will arrive, but it’s a pretty good sign that it’s on the way.

Following that, Google itself let the update slip in a change log for its Edu Device Setup app on the Play Store. Under the “what’s new” section, the app lists “support for Android 4.4.3 and non-Nexus tablets”. Hopefully this means that Google is preparing to ship the update anytime soon, and that it’s not just an innocent type.

We first heard mention of the update back in March, where we received the first hint that a 4.4.3 update might be on the way to fix the Nexus 5 camera bug. More recently, just last week Sprint suggested that the update would be rolling out immediately, although that doesn’t seem to have materialized yet.

Evidence is mounting that Android 4.4.3 is on the way, but the big question still is when.
