Twisty Launcher, start talking to Google Now quickly

Twisty Launcher-1Twisty Launcher-2
With Twisty Launcher opening your favorite apps is easier than ever. All you need to do is hold your phone in your hand and flick to the left twice to open your camera. Twisty Launcher will look for this hand gesture from the background, so you can perform the gesture from inside any app. This makes it super easy to not miss a quick photo opportunity.
No need to fumble around trying to quickly open your favorite apps. Twisty launcher allows unlocking up to three different gestures. Each gesture can be configured to launch the app of your choosing.
What are your favorite stacks! Let us know in the comments.
Some of our favorite choices so far are:
- Camera – Don’t miss a shot!
- Google Voice Search – Allows you to start talking to Google Now quickly from within any app
- Google Gesture Search – Quickly start swiping to pick an app to launch
Why let the Motorola Moto X have all the fun, when you can launch your camera with gestures for free today!
* Android prevents launching apps from the background for about 5 seconds after pressing the home button. If you notice a delay with launching apps try to avoid hitting the home button right before doing the gesture. We don’t know of any way to get around this limitation.

Most Popular Home Screen Replacement: Google Now Launcher

S

Launchers are great, but there are new apps that transform your device, let you customize it yourself with themes, or float useful information to you when you need to see it. Last week we asked you for your faves , then looked at the five best home screen replacements for Android . Now we're back to highlight our winner.

Most Popular Home Screen Replacement: Google Now LauncherS

The Google Now Launcher may not be as transformative as the other contenders, and it's not a complete home screen replacement, but it was definitely the most popular, and it does a great job of floating useful information when you need it—not to mention being a gateway to even more. It picked up the top spot with over 34% of the vote.

EverythingMe snagged second place with 20% of the votes cast for its complete home screen overhaul, app suggestions, and location-aware reminders and notifications. Themer, a customization and personalization suite, squeaked into third place with over 18% of the votes cast, thanks to its wide variety of themes and design options that make your phone really unique. Aviate, the quintessential context-aware home screen replacement and probably the most functional (although not the most customizable) of the five, came in fourth place with 18% of the vote. Bringing up the rear in fifth place was Cover, the context-aware lockscreen replacement (that actually works well with the other homescreen replacements if you choose to double up) with over 9% of the vote.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

How to install the Android Wear launcher on your smartphone

Kris Carlon

Kris Carlon

Putting down roots in Berlin after six years of traveling is a major step for Kris Carlon, who has spent more time living out of a tent lately than sitting at a desk. Kris comes to the AndroidPIT Editorial Team via a lengthy period spent writing on art and culture in Australia and other places he has lived. He joined the Android community while resurfacing in civilization back in 2010 and has never looked back, using technology to replace his actual presence in other people's lives ever since.

The clever folk at Android Police have already pulled apart the contents of the Android Wear code and given us a great glimpse into what we can expect from Google's brand new wearable platform. If you simply can't wait until the end of June to see the G Watch or whenever the Moto 360 will appear, you can install the APK on your smartphone and check out how Android Wear currently looks.

Keep in mind this launcher is scraped from an emulator and is a preview version for developers that is far from the finished product. And you'll be putting on your smartphone, so it's safe to say it's not perfect. But it is cool. You'll need to remove the Helper app Google prepackaged with Android Wear and you'll have no voice functionality as yet (or music player controls), but if you want to have a look-see for yourself, the download link is below. Check out the sexy new screens and icons you'll soon be seeing on a wrist near you:

Android Wear will reportedly support Android's Daydream mode, supposedly for the various watch faces you'll be able to apply to your wearable. As Android Police reported, ''there's evidence for Google Ears (audio identification) functionality as well as TV control and product offer/pricing info. There is also a timer function that will actually count down (instead of setting an alarm).'' A post on Google+ by Enrico Ros shows some more screens from the emulator, demonstrating developer mode, the timer, phone interface and speech screens.

Have you installed the launcher? How cool do you think Android Wear will be when it's finished?

Google Experience Launcher on non-Nexus devices, are third party chargers safe – Android Q&A

Welcome back to another edition of the Android Q&A, where we strive to answer as many of your great questions as possible. This week, we talk about why the Google Now launcher is restricted only to Nexus and Google Play Edition devices, why you can’t talk and use data on your phone at the same time, how to change your location in your Google account, and whether using a charger of another device is okay. Let’s get started!

Question 1

Google Nexus 5 black aa 7

Why is the Google Now launcher available only for Nexus and Google Play Edition devices? And, do you think it will be made available to other Android devices at any time? – Brian Martinez

Answer

As you may know, the Google Now launcher, previously known as the Google Experience launcher that was available with the Nexus 5, made its way to the Google Play Store, but was unfortunately available only to users with Nexus or Google Play Edition devices. While the official reason behind this restriction is unknown, but there are a couple of reasons why we think this is the case.

First, it could well be Google “marking its territory.” With OEMs releasing their own versions of overlays with numerous enhancements and features, this could be an attempt by the company to give users that own Google devices a better user experience, beyond what the minimalistic stock Android has to offer.

Another reason could be the requirement of Android 4.4 Kitkat to use the Google Now launcher. Apart from the Nexus and Google Play Edition devices, the latest version of Android is available to a very limited number of devices. With Kitkat making its way to more and more smartphones and tablets, hopefully Google will then open up their launcher to these devices as well.

Of course, if you’re willing to go the unofficial route, it’s quite easy to get the Google Now launcher on your device. You can find the detailed instructions on how to do so here.

Question 2

Why can’t you talk and use the Internet on your phone at the same time on the Nexus 5? – Marlon Cruickshank

Answer

This problem related to not being able to talk and use the Internet on the Nexus 5 at the same time is generally considered to be an issue with CDMA networks, like the networks of Verizon and Sprint, even though some Verizon users mentioned that they didn’t face this issue. This could also be related to the bands used by the network carrier, as the Nexus 5 is a dual-band CDMA device.

Question 3

a1

How do I change the location on my Google account? – Samuel Cacalheiro

Answer

Go to the Google homepage. On the bottom right hand side, select Settings, and then click on Search Settings in the popup menu. Click on Location in the menu on the left side, where you can set your current location.

Question 4

Does using a 2 Amp or higher charger have a negative impact on your phone battery? My Nexus 5 gets quite warm when plugged into the Samsung Galaxy tablet charger. – Neil Tanna

Answer

The best way to avoid any issues with charging is to use the charging cable and/or AC plug that was provided with your device. Especially if this results in heating issues, it’s best to not use that particular charger anymore. Every phone has a chip that controls how much power it can draw, so even if you use a 2 amp or higher charging option, the phone will draw only whatever is specific to that particular device.

As always, keep sending us your questions in the comments section below, in the comments section of the Youtube video, or on Google+, and we’ll try our best to get you the answers you need!
