Google Glass Gets KitKat Support And Improved Photo Browsing, Loses Video Calls

Anybody will be able to buy Google Glass tomorrow, but ahead of this, Google is giving the Glass software an update. There are a couple of new features in this update, including new tools for making working with photos easier, but Google has also decided to remove the option to do video calls from Glass for the time being.

Google says video calls from Glass didn’t live out to the company’s “high standards.” Only about 10 percent of Glass users currently use them, and because of this, the Glass team has made “the hard decision to remove video calls from Glass until the experience is better.”

It’s unclear when this feature will return, but Google tells Glass users to keep an eye out for video-streaming apps in the MyGlass app library for third-party solutions. Given that video calls from Glass were always one of the device’s marquee features, it does come as quite a surprise that Google would remove this, even if just a few percent of its current users use it.

Send photo message

As for the photo updates, Google now finally bundles photos together so when you scroll through your timelines, it’s not cluttered by lots of photos, and the photos you take are easier to find. Glass now bundles all your videos, photos and vignettes into a single bundle for each day. If you take a lot of photos on Glass, that’s definitely a major improvement.

Despite losing the video calling feature, Hangouts on Glass are still an option for chats, and with this update, Google now allows users to more easily send photos in Hangout messages.

Other new updates include a voice command menu that’s now sorted by frequency and recency, as well as the ability to more easily send feedback about Glass right from the device.

According to Google, there are a few more features in this update, too, but it hasn’t updated its Glass Journal blog yet. We will update this post with a list of all the new features as Google makes this information available.

Invi Richens Text Messages With Link, Photo, YouTube Previews

Android: While Whatsapp and other alternative texting apps are great for sharing links and pics, the humble SMS is lagging behind. Well, not if you have Invi, which makes text messages a multimedia-rich experience.

Invi has an image-rich approach to text messaging. Each contact gets a wide cover photo. When you send or receive a link, Invi fetches a preview, complete with a photo from that article—and you can open the link through an internal browser too. Similarly, shared photos are displayed in a large, screen-wide format, which you can tap to enlarge. And finally, sharing YouTube videos is made a better experience by allowing in-app video playback. However, it didn't work with Vimeo and other video services in our test. And yeah, you can store all those links and photos in a vault for easy sharing later.

There are also a few swipe gestures and other tidbits included, but they don't add to the experience much. Invi requires you to sign up if you want to share images from your phone's gallery, with the benefit that you can send messages to other Invi users for free, over an internet connection.

Flayvr Raises $2 Million To Help Us Make Sense Of Our Growing Photo Collections

Before Apple’s iOS 7 update began organizing your photos into “moments” based on time and place, there was Flayvr. The Tel Aviv-based startup has built automatic organization technology which takes your smartphone’s photos and videos and places them into albums that you can quickly share with your friends and social networks. Today, the company has raised another $2 million in funding to continue to grow its company, whose app now reaches 2 million smartphone users.

The new funding comes mainly from regional investors, including Kaedan Capital, former Microsoft Corporate Vice President Moshe Lichtman, Aviv Venture Capital, iAngels, and angel investors Rafi Gidron, Zohar Gilon, Yariv Gilat, and Partam Hightech.

player screenThe company had previously raised $450,000 from Israeli angel investors.

Available on both iOS and Android, Flayvr has outlived several competitors in the photo organization space including much-loved Everpix, Evernote acquisition Snapjoy, long gone Batch, Google acquisition Flock, and others.

Once installed, the app can serve as something of a replacement to a user’s default photo gallery. It analyzes contextual data around the photos and videos saved on the device, using social, behavioral, user-generated, geolocation, computer vision and time-based signals. After the photos are organized, you can tap to share an album to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, WhatsApp, iMessage, or email.

The app is well-designed, too. In the album, the photos thumbnails are somewhat animated, slowly fading in and out from one picture to the next, as the layout is subtly rearranged with thumbnails that change from a rectangle to a square and back again, and more. This gives you an easy way to the see the album’s photos at a glance, without having to flip through a million photos one-by-one.

Led by technology veteran and former military intelligence officer Ron Levy (CEO) and Adi Ashkenazi (CTO), previously of Fring and Modu, Flayvr has now processed 1 billion photos since launching in 2012.

With the additional funding, the company plans to double its team to 10, and expand operations in the U.S.

flayvr web large

In terms of the Flayvr product itself, the longer-term plan is to extend the platform and technology into the cloud, says Levy.

“Right now, we are focused on creating a new mobile photo and video gallery experience, built around memories rather than a never-ending scroll of thumbnails,” he explains. “There are obvious opportunities to take this same kind of innovation to the large, disorganized shoeboxes in the cloud, but the focus today is on perfecting the mobile experience. Flayvr technology can do for photos and videos what Waze did for maps and WhatsApp did for messaging,” Levy adds.

Bringing Flayvr to other platforms will also help the company begin to generate revenue, he also tells us, but declined to offer details about those specific plans at this time.

As for the iOS 7 elephant in the room – the introduction of a similar, if simplified organizational system built in Apple’s mobile operating system could mean fewer users will go in search of alternative technologies. But Levy says that Apple’s improvements bring more attention to the space of photo and video gallery organization, and that Flayvr will benefit from this increased focus.

“Apple took a great step in the right direction, and at the same time they have shown time and time again that they work with independent developers and encourage them to create improved experiences that complement and re-invent the native apps, such as Waze and WhatsApp,” he says. “We were actually happy to see the changes in iOS 7…There’s plenty of room for both of us to innovate and improve.”

Flayvr is available on iTunes and here on Google Play.

BBM update brings stickers, larger attachments and group photo sharing

Kamran Farooqui

Kamran Farooqui

Curious by nature and a big techie at heart, Kamran is a big Android enthusiast, absolutely loves his Nexus 4 and believes that there is a special place in hell for people who prefer skinned Android over stock. When not vegetating, you will probably find him either struggling with his university essays or playing football or Call of Duty.

Blackberry has announced today the latest version of BBM which finally puts BBM on par with other popular messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Viber. The BBM update brings with itself support for larger file attachments, picture sharing in group chats and the introduction of free and paid stickers.

bbm icon

The sticker packs would be available in a variety of different shapes, sizes and themes, and would be available as both free and paid packs from the BBM shop which is integrated in the app. In addition to stickers, BBM now supports files up to 16 MB (Up from 10 MB) and users can now share photos in group chats as well.

Even though Blackberry might be struggling to compete in the smartphone market against the likes of Apple and Samsung, its BBM platform is still pretty popular and is growing at a healthy rate, and actually has a higher engagement level in major European markets than similar popular messaging apps such as Tango and LINE.

Blackberry has said that the latest version of BBM should be rolling out today for Blackberry 10, iOS and Android, so you can download it for free from your device’s respective App Store. The correct version for Android is BBM 2.1 so look out for that on Google Play.

So what do you think about the latest update to BBM? Personally, I never really understood the charm of purchasing a bunch of stickers when emojis more or less does the job for me, so perhaps a kind reader could explain to me the rationale behind it that has so far eluded me. I’d rather save that money to buy some gems for Clash of Clans. At least it’s FUN.

Kodak Launches A Photo Book App For iPad, Makes Awful “Selfie” Joke

A newly launched photo book application for iPad is bringing a familiar name to mobile photography: Kodak Alaris is debuting “Kodak Moments for iPad,” an app that lets consumers create and order photo books, prints and enlargements using drag-and-drop on iPad.

Competitor Shutterfly should not be too concerned, however.

Kodak Alaris, for those unfamiliar, is the personalized and document imaging businesses group that retained the license to the Kodak brand following Eastman Kodak Co.’s exit from bankruptcy last fall. The company today offers several photography-focused mobile applications for consumers on iOS and Android.

The benefit of using Kodak’s new iPad app is the turnaround time. After building your photo book or ordering prints, you can pick up your creation same-day at a nearby Target or Bartell Drugs store. That’s convenient in terms of last-minute gifts, and the app didn’t throw as many bugs my way as when I tried to use a similar app called Moments shortly after its launch in order to pick up a photo book at a nearby Walgreens. (Walgreens makes an API available to startups, which is both a good and bad thing for its brand, as it turns out.)

However, while the Kodak app is usable, it’s definitely not what one would call enjoyable. The whole experience looks like they ported some dated kiosk software program to the iPad – either that, or some website from the pre-Web 2.0 era. The background is black, with photos falling from the top of the screen to the bottom (flourish!), and generally speaking, the whole application seems as outdated and out of fashion as the Kodak brand itself. What a shame.

screen480x480

Even the App Store description was kind of awful, with the company referring to Yahoo’s Flickr as “FLICKr” (you can grab photos from FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM too, it says), and included the groan-inducing joke “it’s easy to do it your ‘selfie!’”

I’m serious.

This isn’t just in their App Store copy, it’s, like, their slogan:

blog-600

The photo book prices are reasonable, though, with a 5″x7″ 14-page softcover for $7.99 going up to a 8.5″x11″ double-sided hardcover book for just $19.99. That’s cheaper than Shutterfly, and when I’m being super stingy, I may be willing to squint my eyes to use a terrible-looking app like this in order to save a few bucks.

Nope, probably not.

The iTunes download (for your mom or dad) is here.

Sony’s Voice Balloon Photo app launching now – what’s next for voice recognition?

Sony Voice Balloon Photo

Sony has launched a new camera app with an interesting feature – while taking a photo, it listens to the world around you and automatically converts any recognized words into speech balloons within the image. The app is called Voice Balloon Photo and is available now for Sony’s Xperia devices running Android 4.4 KitKat.

Voice Balloon Photo is a fun little enhancement to Sony’s camera app offerings. Simply fire up Voice Balloon Photo and allow the app to recognize voices around you. Those voices will be converted into speech balloons on screen. Snap your photo and save the ambiance of a moment along with the image itself.

Voice Balloon Photo instructions

Voice Balloon Photo is free in the Google Play Store. The timing of the launch also works very well for Xperia users, as Sony just began pushing out the Android 4.4 KitKat update to a handful of devices, and promised even more for later this year. Take a look here to see if your Xperia device will be getting the KitKat update.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Sony Xperia Z1 vs Sony Xperia Z1 compact z1 mini AA -4

We are inspired by Sony’s innovative use of voice recognition, but inserting chat bubbles into photos could be a tough market to crack. Although there are not many standalone apps that place text onto images, there are many popular full featured photo customization apps that include this feature that users have come to love. The most successful photo apps have plentiful and powerful photo filters and an attached social aspect that seem to have made the difference in terms of success. It is possible that Sony’s innovative take on voice recognition capabilities could set it apart from other photo apps, but we are more intrigued with the idea of continued growth for voice recognition itself.

android appsThe majority of apps and services that utilize voice recognition today do so as either simple text input into a text field, or as commands to navigate or trigger actions on the device – we love to search using “Okay, Google” from the Homescreen thanks to the Google Now Launcher. A few companies, like SlickLogin, are using audio input, if not voice commands, to control device authentication, but there are few apps that put voice recognition to work. What we want to see more of is services like Shazam, that can tell you what music or TV show you are listening to, or, indeed, Sony’s new Voice Balloon Photo, which captures in real-time the atmosphere around a photo.

We’re not sure what’s next for voice recognition, but we are excited to find out. What is the best use of voice recognition on a smartphone that you have used?
