Google Lets Anyone In The U.S. Become A Glass Explorer For $1,500 Starting April 15

Google isn’t doing its consumer launch of Glass just yet, but it is doing the next best thing: Opening up the Glass Explorer program to anyone in the U.S. starting April 15. That’s right, as of next Tuesday, any American resident can grab a Google Glass unit for $1,500 plus applicable taxes, and these will ship with your favorite shade or Glass-specific frame included, too.

The program opens its doors at 6 AM PT on Tuesday (9AM for you east coasters), and there are only limited spots available, so it’s probably going to be first-come, first-served. This is still a very expensive piece of hardware, and Google is very clear about this still being the Glass Explorer program specifically, so that comes with all the caveats about this being bleeding edge tech that’s prone to some bugs and refinements yet to come.

Google has previously expanded Glass Explorer program availability by giving the first round of Explorers invites for their friends and family, and now clearly wants to do as much as possible to open up the floodgates for a much broader beta pool.

If you’re outside the U.S., Google is still intent on saving you $1,500; the search giant says that it’s “not ready to bring Glass to other countries” as of yet.

Expanding the Explorer pool doesn’t mean the issues Glass has faced of late around public perception will go away, but it does mean that Google can gather feedback from a wider user group, and one that’s more likely to include people not constantly connected to the tech world and eager to adopt tech as early as possible. That’s probably still going to describe most of those willing to spend $1,500 on joining a beta pool, but when you’re pioneering face-based computing, it’s probably best to get as much early input as you can.

If you want to get reminded about the April 15 6 AM start time, sign up here, or just bookmark it and return to start Exploring.

Aereo TV streaming service adding Chromecast support, starting May 29th

 aereo-devices

Aereo has received quite of attention thanks to its subscription-based model that essentially brings its users over-the-air-TV directly to the web, alongside added DVR functionality. Not all of the attention has been the good kind, though. As we speak Aereo is caught up in a legal battle to determine whether or not the service is actually legal, but Aereo isn’t letting that slow them down.

Today Aereo announced that it will be updating its Android app come May 29th, bringing Chromecast support to the mix! What this means is that you won’t just be able to watch Aereo content through your PC and Android devices, you’ll be able to stream it right back to the big screen as well.

This is a very welcome move for Chromecast users looking to cut the cord without having to revert to bunny ears, though it’s still important to note that Aereo’s service is in beta and is only available in select cities. For more details on Aereo’s plans for Chromecast or for a list of cities where its service is offered, you’ll want to head over to Aereo’s website.

How about it, anyone planning on jumping on Aereo’s $8 monthly service now that it is heading to the Chromecast? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

HTC One M8 Google Play Edition reportedly starting to ship

htc one m8 outdoors aa (8 of 14)

If you happen to be one of those that ordered a Google Play Edition of the HTC One M8 during the first days that it arrived to the Play Store, you might want to check your inbox. Reportedly the handset is already starting to ship ahead of its original 2-3 week shipping target.

For those that ordered the handset more recently than April 25th or 26th? Google changed the status of the HTC One M8 GPe recently to shipping April 15th, so newer orders should expect it no later than the 15th, though here’s to hoping it comes even sooner!

If you have yet to order the HTC One M8 GPe, it is essentially the same exact handset as the standard version, though it forgoes HTC Sense 6 in favor of a stock Android experience. Under the hood you’ll find the same 2.3Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU with 2GB RAM. Other specs include a 5-inch display with 1080p resolution, HTC’s Duo camera, boomsound speakers and a 2600 mAh battery.

For even more details on what to expect from the HTC One M8, be sure to check out our full review — just keep in mind that the software in our review model won’t be exactly the same as the Google Play Edition.

Have you already ordered the HTC One M8 GPe, if so have you received an email alerting you as to when it will ship? For those that are considering the HTC One M8, are you leaning towards the standard or GPe variant?

Samsung Galaxy S5 up for pre-order from AT&T starting tomorrow, US Cellular also confirms its plans

Samsung Galaxy S5 hands on color size vs all -1160803

AT&T is getting ready to open up pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S5, starting tomorrow. The handset will set consumers back $199 on-contract or $649 outright. For those interested in spreading out the cost via AT&T Next, you also have the option of paying $25 a month via Next 12 or $32.50 through Next 18.

You can pre-order the device both online or in store, with AT&T promising to ship the device sometime in early April — though no exact date has been specified just yet.

As for what the GS5 brings to the table? The Galaxy S5 is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Other specs include 16GB storage, microSD, a 16MP rear camera with ISOCELL technology, 2.1MP front cam, a 2800 mAh battery, and plenty of new features like a fingerprint scanner.

Be sure to check out some of our great video coverage below for more details on what to expect from the handset:

For those interested in getting a wearable device to coincide with your GS5 purchase, AT&T is offering $50 off the Gear 2 or Gear 2 Neo when you buy a Galaxy S5 from AT&T, though the promotion ends June 5th. This brings the pricing down to $250 and $150, respectively.

Anyone planning on pre-ordering through AT&T or another carrier for that matter? Conversely, do you have your heart set on another major Android flagship instead, such as the Sony Xperia Z2 or the all-new HTC One?

Update: Following on the heels of the AT&T announcement, U.S. Cellular also has confirmed the handset will be priced at $199 with contract on their network, after instant rebate. U.S. Cellular will carry the Galaxy S5 in two colors and will include a code that’s good for $50 worth of Google Play purchases. The handset will arrive April 11th, both in stores and online.
