Los Angeles wants to become the largest city with free Wi-Fi

Los AngelesFlickr – djandywdotcom

Time Warner Cable has had a tense relationship with the city of Los Angeles and its residents for several years now if not longer.

On February 14, 2011, the Lakers and Time Warner Cable signed a $3 billion, 20-year cable television agreement, which took effect in Fall 2012 but was not seen by a majority of fans in Los Angeles until after the season began due to disputes with several TV providers.

On January 23, 2013, Time Warner Cable and the Los Angeles Dodgers reached terms on a near $8.5 billion, 25-year cable television agreement to create SportsNet LA, which would carry Dodgers games exclusively. As of today, 70% of residents in Los Angeles with cable or satellite can not see Dodgers games due to an ongoing dispute over whether other TV providers should fork over record prices for this one-team channel.

Last month, the city of Los Angeles sued Time Warner Cable for failing to pay nearly $10 million in franchise fees, despite netting $500 million annually from customers in the city.

Now, with dissatisfaction of Time Warner Cable at an all-time high, Los Angeles is trying for a second time to bring in additional competition to the city. On Monday, the city called on competitors to come to town and set up an infrastructure that allows they city’s residents to get free Wi-Fi:

“Blumenfield and other city officials announced at a news conference Monday in front of City Hall the release of a “request for information,” a formal question-and-answer period for people or companies interested in helping the city build the high-speed network. Creating a high-speed municipal network that would serve all of Los Angeles would cost anywhere from $60 million to $100 million. Supporters said private industry would absorb the costs, so long as they could monetize their investment. Other cities, for example, have offered free-wifi in exchange for advertising.

‘We want a partner in the private sector to create high-speed access for every home in Los Angeles,’ Blumenfield said.”

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that Los Angeles will find any suitors for such a plan due to financial and competition reasons. Internet providers see Wi-Fi as a threat to their business and the city still believes that the private company who comes into the city should pay for the infrastructure that allows for the Wi-Fi coverage.

A report from the California Economic Summit states that free municipal Wi-Fi in Los Angeles will create jobs and boost the economy by upgrading and expanding the city’s digital infrastructure. The report concludes that “finding the best way to pay for closing the digital divide will be important to the Los Angeles and California economies, and bridging that gap would be an instant catalyst for a more vibrant, innovative economy.”

The city last tried to implement citywide Wi-Fi in 2007 under an initiative started by then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilman Tony Cardenas. The city dropped the plan in 2009 after determining that the estimated $38 million to $46 million cost to build the Wi-Fi system would be too expensive.

T-Mobile announces Tablet Freedom: 1GB extra data and 4G LTE tablets for Wi-Fi prices

tablet-freedom-tmo

Yesterday T-Mobile announced its new $40 Simple Starter plan, kicking off a three-day series of uncarrier announcements. For round 2, today T-Mobile unveiled that it will be introducing a new initiative called “Tablet Freedom”. Simply put, Tablet Freedom is about bringing cellular connections to your tablet as cheap as possible.

T-Mobile plans to do this is a few ways: First, it is now offering all of its 4G LTE capable tablets for the same price as you’ll find their Wi-Fi counterparts. Second, any newly purchased tablet will get an additional 1GB free data each month, combined with the 200MB free data you already get for tablet devices. T-Mobile’s press release also includes a few other points related to trading in your existing Wi-Fi tablet, participating in the Jump program and their commitment to paying off your ETFs.

T-Mobile’s Tablet Freedom program will officially go into effect the same day as its Starter plan, April 12th. Now we’re just left wondering what tomorrow’s announcement will bring. What do you think of the new Tablet Freedom initiative? Anyone tempted to pick up a tablet via T-Mobile?

Show Press Release

BELLEVUE, Wash. – April 10, 2014 –T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) has revealed the second in a series of rapid-fire initiatives designed to advance the Un-carrier consumer revolution on multiple fronts. The company today launched Operation Tablet Freedom, a program that lets you add a tablet to your postpaid voice plan for free. Beginning April 12th, customers can get nearly 1.2 GB of free 4G LTE data every month through 2014 on America’s fastest nationwide LTE network.

“With this announcement, T-Mobile’s launching a full-on assault against the restrictions and pain points that keep tablet owners from experiencing life beyond the Wi-Fi zone,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “The Un-carrier is all about solving pain points, and today we’re eliminating every reason to be stuck on an unconnected Wi-Fi-only tablet. There’s no longer any need to limit the use of your tablet because you’re intimidated by Big Blue, Bad Red or Bumbling Yellow.”

First, cellular-enabled 4G LTE tablets are more expensive than Wi-Fi-only models. Second, even if you’ve put down the extra money for that cellular-enabled tablet, committing to a long-term data plan for it can be pretty intimidating. And, finally, most people with tablets are stuck with their old Wi-Fi only model, and those who do have cellular models are often stuck in overpriced carrier contracts.

Today the vast majority of American tablet owners are stuck on Wi-Fi or stuck in carrier contracts. That’s about to change.

If you’re stuck on Wi-Fi, you can now come to T-Mobile and upgrade to a 4G LTE-enabled model for nothing down and pay no more than you’d pay for the cheaper Wi-Fi-only model, with any postpaid activation on a 1GB or more mobile internet plan with no annual service contract. For example, pay the Wi-Fi price of $499 instead of $630 for the 4G LTE-enabled 16GB iPad Air. Or pay the Wi-Fi price of $200 instead of $312 for the 4G LTE Samsung Tab 3. Voice customers adding the 1GB tablet plan for free for the rest of 2014 also fully qualify for these reduced prices.

If you’re stuck in a contract with your old carrier, the Un-carrier will pay every penny of your early termination fees (ETFs) when you make the switch to T-Mobile. Just bring in your tablets to receive an instant credit based on their value. Then purchase any tablet at the new lower same-as-Wi-Fi prices.  Customers may even qualify for zero down financing with 24 monthly payments. After receiving the final bill from your old carrier showing your ETFs, just mail it in or upload it to www.switch2tmobile.com. T-Mobile then sends an additional payment covering every last penny of those fees.

And, for both new and existing customers, T-Mobile is offering $10 off its most popular internet data plans starting April 12th through the end of 2014. For voice customers, what that means is you can get up to 1GB of 4G LTE data free every month through the end of the year. Combined with the 200 MB of free data you already automatically get every month with T-Mobile’s previously announced “Free Data for Life” offer that comes to nearly 1.2GB of free 4G LTE data every month through the end of 2014. If you love living beyond the Wi-Fi zone – and want to keep enjoying that tablet freedom beyond 2014 – you can get it starting at just $10 a month with voice service next year.

And whether you are an individual or small business customer, you can take advantage of all of the above plus enjoy all the benefits of our Simple Choice plan with no annual service contracts, no overage charges while on T-Mobile’s lightning fast network, no upgrade hassles with T-Mobile’s revolutionary JUMP!™  program, and with “the world as your network at no extra charge”.

“Starting right now, you can live life beyond the Wi-Fi zone and stay connected. Use your tablet virtually anywhere, anytime you want without fear,” said Mike Sievert, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile.  “In an era when tablets are outselling PC’s, this new 4G LTE tablet offer at Wi-Fi only prices, coupled with nearly 1.2GB data for the rest of this year, we’re removing every reason that would keep you from getting your first tablet or trading in your old one right now at T-Mobile.”

Facebook Messenger gets a new update, introduces free Wi-Fi calling

Facebook-messenger-updated

A new Facebook Messenger update is rolling out today bringing several new features to the table including the ability to create groups for those you message the most, forwarding of messages or photos to other contacts, and much more.

Probably the biggest change is that you can now make free calls over Wi-Fi. The option is also usable while on a data connection, though it isn’t necessarily recommended unless you have an unlimited data plan.

Here’s the full change-log highlighting what to expect in the latest update:

  • Groups: Now you can create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place
  • Forwarding: Want to send a message or photo to someone who isn’t in the conversation? Just tap to forward it on
  • Conversation Shortcuts: Create a shortcut so that you can get to any conversation right from your home screen
  • Free Calls: Talk as long as you want and stay in touch wherever you are. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply).

The update is available now directly through Google Play. While Facebook Messenger isn’t exactly the best messaging platform around by any means, some of today’s additions could certainly make it at least a bit more useful.
