Hang Cups and Use Wire Racks to Maximize Kitchen Cupboard Space

Hang Cups and Use Wire Racks to Maximize Kitchen Cupboard Space

To make maximum the space in the shelves of your kitchen cupboards, designer Chip Cordelli shares two great tips at Real Simple: hang your cups and put wire racks to create mini-shelves.

Shelves within shelves: Use metal risers to separate plates from bowls so you don't have to lift a stack to get to items underneath.

Floating cups: A row of cups looks cozy—as if you're living in your own little bed-and-breakfast—and allows for storage below.

Cordelli used a chrome dinner plate shelf that costs about $10 and three-pound brass-plated cup hooks which cost $5 for a pack of 25.

When you're installing the cup hooks, make sure you start at a corner by measuring the first cup. Once it's installed, hang it and then put the second hook for the second cup, so you know the right amount of distance to keep between the two. Keep going till you run out of hooks or cups!

Project Tango will power NASA’s SPHERES robotic platform, will launch into space later this summer

While Project Ara is more immediately aimed at providing a commercial solution for improving the lives of smartphone users around the globe, the equally ambitious Project Tango is currently geared towards developers and organizations looking to find unique ways to make use a device that is essentially aware of its own surroundings.

Project Tango utilizes a pair of cameras and an infrared projector to measure depth and observe movement, and then takes this information and creates a 3D map of the space around it. Aside from this, the specs inside the Tango ‘phone’ aren’t much different from your typical handset, such as its quad-core SoC and 2GB of RAM.

Google and NASA are working to integrate Tango with NASA’s own robotic platform, SPHERES.

Project Tango has a lot of potential, and Google has already been releasing the device into the hands of various partners over the last couple months. One of these partners is NASA, and today Google revealed a bit about what NASA intends to do with Project Tango.

Project Tango and its role in SPHERES

Since the summer of 2013, Google ATAP’s Tango team has been working closely with a NASA team at the Ames Research Center. The focus of their relationship has been on working to integrate Tango with NASA’s own robotic platform, called SPHERES.

The goal of the SPHERES platform is basically to create autonomous robotic assistants that can eventually handle the more menial tasks for those aboard the ISS space station. Where does Tango play into all this? Basically the smartphone plugs into the SPHERES robotic prototype, providing it with the “eyes” needed to properly navigate around the space station.

When might SPHERES and Tango actually make their way beyond testing and into space? Sooner then you’d think. If all goes well, Project Tango and SPHERES should be launched into orbit later this summer. This is certainly a unique use of the technology behind Project Tango and makes it clear that Tango’s long-term effects could go way beyond simply giving us a cool 3D sensing handset to play around with.

These DIY Belt and Scarf Organizers Save Space in Small Closets

These DIY Belt and Scarf Organizers Save Space in Small ClosetsS

Closet space comes at a premium in most homes and apartments, so you have to make the most of what you get. Luckily, Kelly at View Along the Way shows us how she made these slide-out organizers for belts, ties, scarves, and more that fit even in tight spaces and slide out when you need them.

The image above is the one she made for scarves, which fits neatly behind anything else hanging in the same space, and can slide out when she wants to wear one. The organizers are essentially hooks and hangers mounted on wooden boards, which are themselves mounted on sliding rails that match the size of the closet wall behind it. They look great, and they're a smart way to make productive use of otherwise unused wall space in a storage-challenged space.

The best part of this project, aside from the fact that when they're not in use, each of the organizers is flush against the wall, is that you can make these pretty easily with items you can get at any department store. You'll have to measure your own closet space to make it work, of course, but the sliding rails, the hooks, and the mounting brackets and wood are all easy to come by, and it's easy to customize this to your space. Hit the link below for a full walkthrough of her project so you can get ideas for your own.

MediaFire Launches Desktop Apps, Offers 1TB of Space for $2.50 a Month

MediaFire Launches Desktop Apps, Offers 1TB of Space for $2.50 a Month

We thought Google Drive's price drop was impressive (1TB for $9.99 a month), but, heck, 1TB of space for $2.50 a month is even better. That's what MediaFire is offering now to celebrate its launch of new Windows and Mac desktop apps for syncing your files.

MediaFire is one of our favorite online file sharing services, but previously it was only web-based and you had to drag files to upload them. The new desktop apps (now out of beta) provide a syncing folder like other online storage services do. The desktop apps also show notifications on updated shared files and come with a screen clipping tool to quickly share your screenshots.

Sharing is one of MediaFire's best features. You can "follow" files from other users, track downloads and access to shared files, and also set sharing permissions on specific folders. The file size limit, by the way, is 20GB.

You can sign up for the 1TB plan for $2.50 a month or save a few bucks with a yearly plan for $25. Business plans for 100TB of space are also half off at $24.99 a month. This promotion is good through the summer and, I'm told by a MediaFire rep, that if it's popular (which it seems to be), they'll continue to price it at $2.50. Of course, they recommend you sign up for the yearly plan, though.

MediaFire's iPhone and Android apps are also being updated over the next few weeks to include things like automatic photo syncing.

Read more about the updates at MediaFire's blog or sign up with the link below.

Set a Quota on Your Synology NAS to Keep Space from Filling Up

Set a Quota on Your Synology NAS to Keep Space from Filling Up

Synology NAS drives are some of the most popular around, and they're great for storing files on your home network, streaming media, or backing up your computer. Left unchecked, though, those backups can fill up your available storage in a hurry.

To prevent your backup program from taking up more space on your Synology NAS drive than necessary, set a quota for the Synology account you use to connect to it (in this example, we'll use Time Machine on a Mac). Instead of using your own Synology admin account, create an account just for Time Machine. Then, give it a quota:

  1. Log in to your Synology NAS drive, then go to Control Panel > User > Create.
  2. Choose a name and password for the new Time Machine user account.
  3. Make sure the account is part of the regular users group, not the admin group.
  4. Give read/write access to the folder you plan to use for Time Machine backups.
  5. Tick the box to enable a quota for the user, then choose the quota. Two times the total amount of storage on your computer should be sufficient.
  6. Finish the User Creation Wizard and apply the settings to the new user.

After you finish setting the quota, go to Time Machine (or your backup program of choice) and connect to the Synology shared folder using the user account you just created. Backups will now be restricted to the space you set aside for it, so you don't run out of space for all your other goodies.

FLOW - A Space Drum Saga DLX - feel the beat!

Features & Use

FLOW - A Space Drum Saga DLX is the ideal app for those who have a good sense of rhythm. The game starts you off with a brief list of requirements. For example, you need a device that has good hardware components, otherwise your performance might suffer and you will most likely not enjoy using the app. Headphones are also recommended so that you don’t miss even the finest nuances of sound.

The game starts off with a little story and a few simple drums. The atmosphere in the game is modeled around a journey into outer space where you are the captain of a spaceship, fresh out of a coma, who must take control over the ship again. For this purpose, you’ll have to play the drums. It begins relatively simply with the use of one finger and slowly the difficulty level increases as you progress.

Above, you’ll see your energy bar which fills up if you remain in time. If you mess up the rhythm, the energy decreases again. At the top of the screen, the game’s corresponding story unfolds. Little cartoon aliens inform you about news from space, notify you of emergency situations and encourage you to continue drumming because this ensures you’ll have enough energy needed for your spaceship. Once you have passed the first test, you can head to the nearest planet and challenge new beats.

With each new planet, the level of difficulty increases. You have to listen really carefully to play the right beat. In addition, as the game progresses, the game will no longer pause for small dialogues between the aliens. So a lot of multitasking is required. The game can get to be quite difficult. You should definitely abide by the headphones tip to ensure you really hear the beat; it’s really the only way that you can fully dive into this rhythmic alien world while you surrender yourself to the beat.

Each level includes little stories and tasks. For example, at one point in time you need to use drums to avoid being eaten by a monster. In the next level, you are tasked with finding a lost tribe. How you do this doesn’t change though: you continue playing the drums and try to stay in rhythm as much as possible.

The game’s story and the drum-playing tasks work well together, creating an incredibly thrilling game experience. Especially when using the headphones, your concentration is fully focused on the beats and dancing aliens.

In the settings, you can activate lighting effects, graphics and other functions. However, it’s advisable to perform the automatic speed test. The app checks your settings and configures them automatically so that you have the best possible gaming experience. Alternatively, you can choose various presets like "fast", "standard" and "you". There are also three different difficulty levels and detailed statistics of your drumming. You can check out the games you’ve won, the drums you’ve played, how many perfect rhythms you've had and other details.

androidpit flow 5 © AndroidPIT

There’s even a trophy collection, an overview and information about your captain status. In addition, you can see what challenges to expect down the road. There are various special drums that can be unlocked later in the game.

Screen & Controls

In the game itself, the display is divided into two areas: on the top the small aliens dance and below are four large buttons on which the beats are shown. Here you need to find the correct beats so that the story unfolds in the top part of the screen. Sometimes it really required a lot of concentration, but it worked quite well after some getting used to.

The menu within FLOW - A Space Drum Saga DLX is also niccely done. You can jump to various levels by unlocking and visiting other planets. Settings, statistics, and high scores can quickly be reached from the main menu. You are required to swipe to the right in order to navigate through the galaxy.

Speed & Stability

During the test period, and especially after the automatic configuration, the game ran very smoothly and stably. There were no crashes, however the app closed sporadically after taking screenshots. I couldn’t connect to the server during the test despite a stable Wi-Fi network in order to compare the highscores. After closing FLOW - A Space Drum Saga DLX, it often reloaded. Despite these shortcomings, my journey with FLOW was free of problems. Within the levels, there were no interruptions, lags or glitches.

Price/Performance Ratio

FLOW - A Space Drum Saga DLX currently costs 4.73 US dollars and is ad-free. There’s a free version if you want to give it a whirl first before buying. However, the free version does include advertisements.

Final Verdict

FLOW - A Space Drum Saga DLX is an impressive game which isn’t just a lot of fun, it can also be taken seriously if you are keen on improving your concentration, multitasking and sense of rhythm. It did however include a few small bugs such as the pesky reload after the closing of the app. That being said, the developer provides good support and is already working on a solution. Overall, the app did lots to impress: an intuitive interface and a good, fluid performance were just a few of its highlights. In addition, the background story is complex and very nicely designed. For fans of drums and beats, the game is absolutely recommended.
