Rumored Galaxy S5 Prime Specs shows up in India

It has long been rumored that Samsung planned to release a higher end version of its premium Samsung Galaxy S5 in the shape of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime. This model, if the rumours are to be believed, is going to be an attempt to get at Apple when they launch their iPhone 6 later on in the year.

Samsung continues to deny the existence of the phone but this makes sense since people would simply wait for the better version to show up instead of upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy S5 right now. It would probably upset people that a better version of the phone they just bought is going to be released. No matter how many times Samsung denies that the phone is in existence, it keeps on making small cameo’s online. An SM-G906S/K has popped up in a shipping manifest in India. It is believed to be the regional variant of the actual Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime. Four of the devices shipped out of South Korea, apparently for purposes of Research and Development but other than this nothing much has been revealed about them.
The alleged phone recently made an appearance and is said to feature the following specs:
Rumored Galaxy S5 Prime Specs
Display2560x1440 5.2 Inch
Processor2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor with Adreno 420 GPU
RAM3 GB
Camera16 MP rear/ 2MP front-facing
Storage32 GB
Operating SystemAndroid 4.4.2 KitKat
These specs are what some were expecting from the Galaxy S5. Again consumers wouldn’t be too happy seeing other people later on in the year getting a better phone than them when they paid for a high end device earlier in the year.
What do you make of the whole Galaxy S5 Prime business? Please leave us a comment below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Canary Smart Home Security Shows Off Its Smartphone App For The First Time

Canary has had a big year. After smashing through its Indiegogo campaign goal and picking up an extra $10 million in VC funding, the company is nearly ready to ship its home security product.

Due to a couple of hurdles, Canary units won’t arrive until “this summer,” but to tide us over, the team has given us our first real look at the complementary smartphone application.

So, when you first receive your Canary, you must pair it to your Wi-Fi and your smartphone. Rather than go through some painful process, the company set it up so that you can pair the unit with the smartphone and connect the Canary to the Internet by simply using a standard audio cord, which is included with the device.

Once you’re paired, you create a user ID and password and you’re essentially done. From there, the Canary will give you constant access to a live video feed of your home, as well as reads on temperature, air quality, noise, etc. But you can have even more control.

Canary lets you sync up to four different units in a single location to get a clear view of every room in the house. You can also set up multiple Canary units in different locations to keep a lookout on your house and your office, for example.

For each location, the user can assign contacts as either primary or backups. Primary users (most likely family members of roommates) have complete access to the Canary system at any time, and get notifications if anything is awry. Backups are usually neighbors or close friends who will not have anytime access to the live video, but will be next in line if you don’t respond to a notification. That way, friends and neighbors can rescue your cat if there’s a fire while you’re at work, or call the cops if someone is breaking in and you don’t respond to your notifications.

The app also has different modes: “Home”, “Away”, “Privacy” (which stops recording and monitoring) and “Vacation.” Canary already knows when you’re home and away, and you have complete control over the vacation and privacy modes.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Canary app is the ability to flag events. I asked the founders why anyone would need to save recorded clips of “motion events” on their smartphones, as it seems you would either act on them or not need them anymore. However, Canary realizes that not every event has to be a bad one.

Maybe Canary picks up your kid’s first steps, or catches a special moment in your life and you want to hold on to that. By flagging the event in the Canary app, that moment is saved and can be downloaded to your computer.

Canary doesn’t ship until this summer, but the team is still taking pre-orders here.

Amazon Phone leak shows 6 cameras and 3D display

There have been rumors surrounding the possibility of an Amazon phone in the making for quite some time now and it looks like we have some new hard evidence. The biggest surprises of all are the six cameras and a partial 3D display. What might seem like absurd rumors, might actually be true.

amazon phone1 © BGR

BGR was able to expose the first pictures of the supposed Amazon phone. Unfortunately the device was placed into a production case in order to not show the design, so we can’t say much about how it looks for the moment. The first thing we couldn't help notice though were not one, not two….but five front-facing cameras. Four of these have led to the rumor that this device will come allegedly with some 3D effects. What this exactly means and how far the feature will go is still yet to be discovered.

In terms of tech specs, at least one of the planned versions will come with 2 GB of RAM, a Snapdragon processor, a 720p display of 4.7 inches and a 13 MP main camera. Though this doesn’t say much, we are slightly taken aback by the meagre resolution considering the display was considered to be a central point in the creation of Amazon’s new phone. On the software side, it will without a doubt house the Firefox OS.

Further details will probably be dropped in the near future, but right now is a perfect time to ask you the readers the following question: do you think a 3D display (which actually isn’t a new feature) will be useful or rather a battery-draining gimmick?

This Tipping Infographic Shows Who Expects Tips, and How Much

This Tipping Infographic Shows Who Expects Tips, and How Much

Tipping is a confusing practice, usually because you're never quite sure who you're supposed to tip, when, and how much. This infographic from Wait But Why shows what most people do, and what's expected at different establishments.

We've actually gone over some of this information before—in more detail, actually—but this infographic, sourced from the actual people who get tipped (waiters, cab drivers, and so on), is an interesting look into what most people do and what's generally expected. None of these are exactly hard and fast rules—and keep in mind they're New York City-based numbers—but if you've always wondered whether it's as important to tip a hotel bellman as it is a waiter, or how much, a quick glance at this will give you a good idea. Be sure to read our complete guide to tipping for a more detailed list and recommendations, too.

Newest Galaxy S5 ad shows fun, fast, fresh

Samsung has put out a new 30-second ad for its latest baby, the Samsung Galaxy S5. In just a half minute, the ad courses through so many wonderful ideas and concepts, as well as fascinating phone features without losing track of its main emphases — what one’s life can be if it is powered by the Galaxy S5.

The narration itself explicitly characterizes that kind of life as being able to “capture life in a blink,” “download the world in an instant,” and “live carefree.” All of these are fueled by three of the Galaxy S5′s chief features: fast camera autofocus, fast network experience, and water and dust resistance features.

The first few seconds of the ad immediately bring to the fore images of life’s little pleasures (depicted by children enjoying the cool spray of water from a fire hydrant on what seems to be a hot and humid day), of one’s becoming suddenly aware of such pleasures, of one’s wanting to capture such moments of human satisfaction, and of being actually able to do so (thanks to the Galaxy S5′s features, especially the fast camera).

Samsung selfies

Samsung didn’t forget the selfie, of course, making sure to dedicate several of the ad’s precious seconds to selfie moments that the Galaxy S5 can provide to its owner.

Woven throughout the ad is the theme of exhilaration and of being refreshed — feelings that may well be what Galaxy S5 users will encounter after having experienced the dullness, slowness, and dryness of yesterday’s technology.

The ad’s closing hints at the Galaxy S5′s ability to make photos and videos seem realistic.

Fun and fast

Overall, the ad is fast-paced, fun, easy on the eyes and mind, and straightforward in a creative way. It simply shows the viewer some of the great things that the phone can do without putting the viewer or Samsung’s competitors on the defensive.

Have you seen Samsung’s latest ad for the Galaxy S5? What do you think of it? How does it make you feel? Does it make you want the Galaxy S5 more? Does it make you want the Galaxy S5 at all? Share your thoughts in the comments.

New HTC flagship (Butterfly?) shows up in benchmarks with 13MP camera

mnri htc butterfly S

The 2013 HTC Butterfly s

A new HTC device spotted in the AnTuTu benchmark database could be the successor of the 2013 Butterfly s.

Bearing the 0PAJ3 code number, this previously unknown smartphone shares many of the core specifications with the freshly launched HTC One M8, with one big difference. The benchmark entry suggests the device will be equipped with a 13MP camera, instead of the 4 UltraPixels unit on the M8, as well as the original One from last year.

htc butterfly 2 antutu

HTC is due to refresh the Butterfly series this summer; the previous iteration, the Butterfly s, debuted in July 2013. While it’s possible that this benchmark entry refers to something else, there’s a relatively good chance we just had a look at the new Butterfly.

The Butterfly s had a 4 UltraPixels camera, so, if our assumption is correct, HTC will go back to a conventional sensor for the new generation, possibly to cut costs.

Other specs revealed are a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor capped at 2.3GHz with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. While the new Snapdragon 805 will be available by mid-year, we think HTC will stick with the 801 for the new Butterfly.

The display will retain the Full HD resolution, though HTC might increase its size (the Butterfly s had a 5-inch SLCD3 screen). The front camera is a 5MP unit, presumably coupled with a wide field lens, just like the one on the M8. Finally, there’s Android 4.4.2 listed as the OS, which is really no surprise.

The Butterfly s had a large 3200 mAh battery, which was quite impressive for a 5-inch device. There’s no mention of battery capacity in the benchmark, but hopefully the new Butterfly won’t disappoint.

HTC sold the Butterfly s mostly in Asian markets, though the original 2012 Butterfly made it to Europe and to the US (sold as Droid DNA).

Google Shows A Glimpse Of How Its Modular Phone Moonshot Is Progressing

Google has released a video (embedded below) showing a glimpse of what’s going on behind the scenes at Project Ara, one of the hardware shunkworks projects coming out of its Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP). The ATAP group is also working on a 3D mapping handset which Google showed off in February, called Project Tango.

Project Ara is the codename for the modular phone concept that Motorola was working on, and which Google retained when it sold the rest of Motorola Mobility to Lenovo.

As Google’s moonshots go, Project Ara is relatively tame — compared to Project Loon‘s connectivity balloons, say. Or the biggie, Calico: Google’s attempt to hack death.

But deconstructing the complexity of a smartphone and refashioning it as a bunch of swappable components which can be slotted together in various custom combinations by the user is clearly no cake walk.

Nor is getting people to grok the concept of speccing out their own phone in hardware terms. (Although, really, when you think about it, the modular hardware concept is much like the modular software that users are now very comfortable with — aka apps.)

Designing an interface to explain the modular smartphone concept to users is something the video touches on, with an Ara configurator app shown to be in the works. ”We’re really trying to make this interface as simple as possible, and as spacially intuitive as we can,” says Eric Gunther, co-founder of SoSo Ltd, an interactive design studio that’s working with Google’s ATAP on the design of this app.

The connecting force Google is going to use to bind all the phone blocks in each modular device is magnetism. Or “electro-permanent magnetism”, as the video puts it — which presumably means the magnetism is switched on when you want the device to stay together, and off when you want to swap out components.

Making sure those connections are robust enough for everyday use is going to be a key requirement of the Ara project. Things fall apart, sure; but smartphone owners aren’t going to want their phone to do so in their jacket pocket.

The video also includes a view of the metal exoskeleton where prototype modules are being tested by the ATAP team:

Project Ara

Plus, there’s a glimpse of how different size configurations of the modular device might look in terms of end-user design —  with phablet, standard and small handsets being specced out – albeit, in render form at this nascent stage:

Project Ara

Project Ara

The most interesting thing about the video — which very much has the feel of a crowdfunding pitch video you might find on Kickstarter or Indiegogo — is that Google is clearly continuing to put marketing muscle behind Project Ara to try to get outsiders excited about the prospect of a modular device.

It’s running a two-day developer conference for the device this month, which likely explains the release timing of this video.

The conference is the first in a series planned for this year, with the first event focusing on the alpha release of the Ara Module Developers’ Kit (MDK) — to get developers building Ara modules. More events are planned, so expect more details about Ara to keep dropping, piece by piece.

Extended ‘All New HTC One’ Leak Video Shows Brushed Gray Stainless Finish

The HTC One (not the old one, the new one) is being introduced tomorrow at an event in NYC that kicks off at 11 AM ET, but in case you weren’t yet tired of the steady stream of leaks that have ruined any possible surprises at the flagship unveiling, here’s a nearly 15-minute video look at HTC’s latest kick at the can.

The M8 (HTC’s internal code name for the new One) you see above is one of four rumored colorways for the smartphone, which also include gold, silver and black in addition to this sort of slate gray finish. You can see from the video that the finish is more brushed than the finish on last year’s HTC One, and the new metal edges surrounding the phone appear to have been polished to a mirror finish.

While this isn’t the first leak for the new HTC One, or even the first extended hands-on video look, it is a new perspective on this yet-to-be-announced hardware, and one that makes me even more excited to see the real thing in the flesh. HTC knocked it out of the park with the original HTC One, in terms of design and performance, and it looks poised to do it again. Hopefully this time around, consumers will take notice.

Rumored specs for the HTC One (M8) include a 2.3GHz Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, either 16 or 32GB of onboard storage with expandable micro SD memory up to 128GB, a 5-inch display with 1080×1920 resolution and 441 ppi display density, and the new Duo Camera which composes images from two separate captures for advanced editing features. Tune in here tomorrow as we bring you all the info about the new smartphone when it finally becomes official.
