WellBiome Gives You 100 Trillion Reasons To Follow Your Gut

Apparently there are 100 trillion bacteria living in our gut. And just like a fingerprint, the composition of our “microbiome” is unique to each of us. It also potentially holds the key to a healthier lifestyle as it impacts on our weight, energy levels and overall well-being.

That’s the premise of WellBiome, an Estonian medtech startup that falls between two “stools” — 23andme and the general quantified health trend — with a service that sequences and analyses the DNA of the gut’s bacteria to provide personalised diet recommendations.

Specifically, the problem WellBiome is trying to solve is that general nutrition advice often tends to be a one-size-fits-all approach even though, according to the DNA of our gut’s bacteria, each of us is different.

“Since every human being is completely unique but the nutrition advice available today is very general or meant for the “average” person, the only method to change your nutrition is trial and error by finding what works for you,” explains WellBiome co-founder Henri Raska. “Our value proposition here is a very personalised scientific approach.”

That “scientific approach” involves you taking a stool sample, using the supplied WellBiome kit (cost: €129), and sending it off to the startup to analyse.

Then the DNA of gut bacteria is sequenced in the lab, something that used to be prohibitively expensive, and this is used to determine your microbiome composition.

Finally, WellBiome applies its proprietary algorithm based on data from around a hundred recently published scientific studies and clinical trials, and generates your personalised report and dietary advice.

As an example, WellBiome may recommend you consume more beans, peas and whole grains to increase the presence of Bifidobacterium and make digestion more efficient.

More generally, it’s important to consume enough nutrients for the beneficial bacteria in your gut to manage the amount of energy that you get from food and “to prevent excessive population growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi,” says the company.

“The problems we are solving is well-being, weight, energy levels and life expectancy,” says Raska.

He and his co-founder Liis Loorits have a background in molecular microbiology research to characterise environments like biogas, milk, bread and cheese. After joining a startup summer programme at the local Startup Garage, they’ve spent the last two years applying the same methods to researching the human intestines.

“We are solving these problems from a unique angle: sequencing the DNA of bacteria in one’s gut and making super-personalised dietary recommendations based on that,” he adds.

Competition-wise, I’ve not come across a startup doing quite the same thing as WellBiome, although uBiome is attempting to crowd-source (and crowd fund) scientific data related to the microbiome and also offers users a kit to get information back on their gut bacteria’s DNA.

The 5 reasons One (M8) is better than the Galaxy S5, according to HTC

samsung galaxy s5 vs htc one m8 aa (18 of 19)

In a rare coincidence, HTC and Samsung are releasing their hero devices in the US almost at the same time. While HTC pulled off a quick release of the One M8, it was only available on Verizon initially, meaning that customers of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint had to wait until yesterday to join in the fun. Meanwhile, Samsung is releasing the Galaxy S5 today across all US carriers, as well as in 124 other countries.

With these two beasts unleashed at the same time, we have a true deathmatch between the One (M8) and the Galaxy S5. Samsung has the superior spending power when it comes to marketing, but HTC isn’t standing still either.

According to alleged marketing training materials uncovered by HTC Source, HTC is betting on the following five features to convince buyers of the superiority of the M8.

1. Metal beats plastic – HTC specifically name calls Samsung for the plastic build of the Galaxy, contrasting it with the “stunning design” of the M8.

2. BoomSound – HTC touts the virtues of the M8’s speakers, and it’s easy to see why. BoomSound was loud and clear on the M7, and it’s even better on the new One M8.

3. Fast access – you can wake up the M8 by double tapping or swiping on the screen. The Galaxy S5 lacks this feature.

4. Duo Camera – the depth sensor on the back of the M8 lets it distinguish between foreground and background, allowing you to apply selective focus and other effects. The Galaxy S5 has a similar feature, though it’s not as powerful at the M8’s.

5. HTC Advantage – for the finale, HTC throws in Advantage, its extended warranty program that gives you one-time screen replacement in the first six months of ownership, guaranteed 2-year Android upgrades, and more.

Here’s the doc (which could also be a promotional leaflet, from the looks of it) if you want to read it for yourself.

And, if you want a more neutral take on M8 vs Galaxy S5, here’s our fresh comparison video.

So, what it’s gonna be? HTC One (M8) or Samsung Galaxy S5?

3 reasons why Amazon Fire TV will crush the competition

amazon-fire-tv-remote-popcorn-image_1280

With the Fire TV, Amazon entered an already crowded media streaming market, one that’s arguably dominated by Apple and Roku, but Amazon’s box has a few advantages that can help set it apart.

For the most part media streaming devices have the same features. There’s only so many media streaming services available, and only so many things you can do with a tiny box that connects to a TV. Amazon has to differentiate in other ways, ways that aren’t so much about content.

So how can Amazon make the Fire TV different?

Amazon Fire TV vs Competition

Exposure

How did you first hear about the Amazon Fire TV? Okay, there’s a good chance you heard rumors of the box for a long time, and you watched tech news sites as they liveblogged the event and posted their first hands-on. But if you visited Amazon’s website any time since the announcement you no doubt saw the letter from Jeff Bezos on the homepage introducing the device. Even now, two days later, the letter is still there.

The reach of Amazon really can’t be overstated. Even if the Fire TV has the same basic functions as Roku boxes, more people are familiar with the Amazon brand than Roku. Of course, that doesn’t help Amazon against Apple or Google, though.

Media Prediction

Amazon Fire TVOne of the features Amazon doesn’t really seem like its touting too much is also one that could give it an edge against the Apple TV and Chromecast. Advanced Streaming and Prediction, or ASAP, sounds like a backcronym, but that doesn’t make it any less cool. ASAP is a feature that predicts what shows or movies you might want to watch next and preloads it onto the Fire TV so its available to streaming instantaneously.

Assuming the feature works and can accurately predict your tastes, it should cut the buffering times from your streaming. Buffering is a common complaint with the Apple TV, especially with customers of notoriously bad ISPs (Comcast and Time Warner, for example). By potentially cutting out buffering Amazon has a leg-up on the current Apple TV.

Gaming

The last thing the Fire TV has going for it is more of a promise than anything else at the moment. With the ability to play some Android games the Fire TV is almost like a better version of the Ouya, albeit one without Towerfall (also known as the only reason to own an Ouya). Sev Zero looks like it could be a cool game, but so far it’s the only exclusive game on the platform.

Amazon is trying to build up its gaming efforts, though. It recently bought Double Helix, the developer behind the Xbox One version of Killer Instinct, and the Strider reboot on all consoles. There’s also been reports that Amazon is looking around the video game industry to beef up Amazon Game Studios. Not to mention AppStream which looks tailor-made for streaming games to the box.

Amazon Fire TV Game ControllerWith the right talent in Amazon Game Studios and enough publishers or developers using AppStream the Fire TV could be an interesting, and rather inexpensive, video game console in addition to a media streamer. Though a game controller that doesn’t look like a rejected OnLive controller design would be nice.

Is it enough?

Even with its advantages, there’s no guarantee the Fire TV will succeed against Apple, Google, or even Roku. Some of its features are neat, but not exactly game-changers, while others won’t appeal to everyone. If the Kindle and Kindle Fire proved anything, though, it’s that Amazon is willing to iterate over a few generations even if the first one doesn’t exactly blow away the competition.

What do you think sets the Fire TV apart? What would make you actually buy one over another streaming set-top box?
