new smartphone launch Motorola will unveil

motorolamwc
It’s been a little while since Motorola brought us anything new, other than the announcement of its upcoming Moto 360 smartwatch. While there’s still a lot of unknowns for Motorola as its prepares to transition to a new owner, it appears that we’ll be getting a look at what’s next from the company on May 13th.
The news of the upcoming announcement comes straight from Motorola’s press invite (seen below), and hints that their next handset will be “Made to last. Priced for all.” The announcement event will take place in London during the morning hours. So what kind of device are we looking at here? That’s a good question.
motorola-may-13
The Moto X — Motorola’s main flagship — was released back in August, so it seems less likely that the event will center around the Moto X+1. On the other hand, maybe the company wants to get the device out into the hands of consumers before Google’s deal with Lenovo finalizes later this year.
Judging by the wording of the press invite, however, it seems much more plausible that we are looking at Motorola’s ultra-low-cost XT1021, which reportedly will go by the name of Moto E (E for Everyone?). Although we don’t know for sure what to expect from the Moto E (aka XT1021), previous rumors indicate the device will offer a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM. 5MP camera, a 4.3-inch display, 4GB storage, a 1900 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat.
Motorola's next device could be cheaper than even the highly-affordable Moto G
Even more impressive, the device is said to be much cheaper than even the highly-affordable Moto G. With the Moto G coming in at $179 unlocked and as little as $99 for locked prepaid variants, this means we could be talking about a handset that’s under $100, unlocked and without contract.
For now we’d take all the rumors with a grain of salt, but thankfully we don’t have much longer to wait before we find out for sure what Motorola has up its sleeve.
If Motorola really is preparing to unveil a device that’s priced lower than the Moto G, this could be a huge deal, especially for budget users and those in emerging markets. Interestingly enough, Lenovo has hinted that emerging markets will be a priority for Motorola once the company becomes part of its team.

motorola droid tablet, ships 6.5 million units in Q1 2014

With less than a month at the helm of Motorola Mobility, Rick Osterloh took to the twitter-sphere to announce that Motorola has shipped 6.5 million devices globally in the first quarter of 2014. It was a simple announcement of a number that struggles to compare to the top producers, but 6.5 million is a respectable number for big M.
There are no specifics to speak of, but we suspect these results are in large part thanks to the success of their affordable Moto G Android smartphone that has been setting sales records for the company. Other devices that make up Motorola’s sales would have included the Moto X and a slew of DROID brand devices, like the DROID Maxx and DROID Ultra.
Motorola G Hands On AA (1 of 17)
In February, Motorola opened the Moto G for sales in India; exclusive vendor, Flipkart, reported selling out of all stock in the first 15 minutes. With a starting price of $179 in the U.S. for the standard and unlocked versions for the Moto G, it has proven an affordable unit, possibly the best bang for the buck device on the market. And if $179 is too pricey, there is a carrier specific version of the Moto G at Verizon and U.S. Cellular that runs for just $99 ($89 if you catch special deals.)
Compared to some of the larger smartphone manufacturers around the globe, Motorola’s 6.5 million units feels a little small. Samsung loves to announce when it has reached certain milestones, such as 10 million Galaxy Note 3s sold in two months, or 10 million Galaxy S4s sold in only 30 days. However, if we look at some of Motorola’s own history, we see a company that delivered just 3.9 million units for the same period in 2013, and only shipped half a million of their ‘flagship’ Moto X devices in its first quarter on the market, which means that 6.5 million units is something to celebrate.

What’s next for Motorola?

motorola Moto360 Metal
Motorola Mobility has been known as “Motorola a Google Company” since Google purchased the company less than 3 years ago. This is all about to change as we are seeing the final stages of the sale of Motorola over to Chinese based Lenovo. Only Lenovo knows what Motorola will look like by the end of the year, but until the sale is finalized, Motorola is pushing forward with more rumored devices. The Moto X+1 is expected to replace the Moto X, and the XT1021 series may come soon as well for a fraction of the cost of the Moto G. Aside from the rumors, it is a safe bet that the officially announced Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch (pictured above) has captured the attention of many, promising the best that Android Wear has to offer in its innovative, yet oh-so-classic, round watch face design.
Is Motorola’s pending sale to Lenovo making you hold off on purchasing a Motorola smartphone?

Motorola reportedly getting ready to launch XT1021 series, could be cheaper than Moto G

Motorola G Hands On AA (13 of 17)

The first details about Motorola’s next-gen Moto X have already been leaking out recently, but what else can we expect from the company? While so much about Motorola’s future is up in the air as the Lenovo deal marches towards finalization, it appears that the Moto X+1 isn’t the only new handset in the works.

Thanks to Brazilian-based Tecnoblog, we have learned that three new Motorola handset models have passed through Anatel — Brazil’s equivalent of the FCC: the XT 1021, XT 1022 and XT 1025. All three models are basically said to be the same device but with the first having just a single SIM slot, the second with dual-SIM and the third with both dual-SIM and a digital TV tuner. It’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first evidence of the new Motorola XT 102(x) series, as the XT 1021 actually passed through the FCC a little over a month ago, rocking AT&T-friendly 3G capabilities.

Juding by the specs, this new handset could be even cheaper than the already extremely affordable Moto G

So what exactly can we expect from the Motorola XT 102(x)? If Tecnoblog’s leaked details prove correct, this could be a very modest entry-level handset. Specifically the phone is said to offer a 1.2Ghz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, a 4.3-inch display, 4GB storage and a 1900 mAh battery. Reportedly the handset will also offer Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

As you can see, that puts this new handset even a bit lower down the budget chain from the already extremely affordable Moto G, which falls in line with former Motorola CEO Woodside’s past comments about attempting to drive down phone pricing even lower than we saw with the G.

details-leaked

So how low could the XT 102(x) go? It’s hard to say for sure, though reportedly the higher-end XT 1025 will come in at around 599 Brazilian reels, or roughly $267.75. That means the base single SIM model could be considerably cheaper if and when it launches internationally, though how much cheaper is anyone’s guess.

The Motorola XT 102(x) is said to be preparing for a launch as early as May in Brazil, though no word on when it might arrive beyond this. Of course it’s important to note that Motorola has yet to confirm the existence of this upcoming device, and that means you should take the above-mentioned specs and other details with a hefty grain of salt.

IF the rumors are accurate, could the Motorola XT 102(x) be a budget market game-changer like the Moto G? Would anyone be interested in picking up such a device if the price was sub-$150?

Motorola DROID HD and DROID M KitKat update around the corner

The KitKat update is making its rounds to smartphones and tablets, however just a little too slowly for the liking of most users. David Schuster of Motorola Mobility is the bearer of the good news for DROID owners though, having reported that the 2012 DROID family of smartphones, meaning the DROID HD and DROID M, are next up for the Android KitKat update.

Mr. Schuster was nice enough to share details for owners of ''older'' devices. In his post, he stated that after many have asked about the update, the update will be arriving to the DROID smartphones mentioned above in the ‘’next few weeks’’, so hopefully by the last week of April / first week of May, you DROID owners should be prompted to update your device.

If you are feeling a bit antsy, you can go ahead and check if the update is locked and loaded for your smartphone by going into the settings, then scroll down to ''About device'' and tap on ''Software update''. Please feel free to let us know as soon as you get the update so we can spread the news.

Motorola names Rick Osterloh as its new President

RickOsterloh

There seems to be a fair share of uncertainty brewing over at Motorola these days. Not only did Google catch most of us off guard when it announced its plans to sell Motorola to Lenovo earlier this year, even their CEO Dennis Woodside recently announced he was jumping ship to work for Dropbox.

Rick Osterloh is officially taking Woodside’s place as the top-dog at Motorola

Despite the upcoming change of hands from Google and the loss of its CEO, Lenovo remains confident that it can help turn Motorola around quickly and has previously hinted about its plans to expand the brand into emerging markets in a more meaningful way.

As Motorola marches forward, it’s going to need a strong leader if it wants to keep up the momentum that it has generated over the last year or so. To that end, Motorola has now announced that Rick Osterloh is officially taking Woodside’s place as the top-dog at Motorola.

We are pleased to learn that Motorola has named Rick Osterloh to lead Motorola Mobility, effective today. Rick has a strong track record of success and delivering outstanding innovation for customers. He is a trusted, proven leader. We’re confident in his ability to not only manage a smooth transition at Motorola from Google to Lenovo but also to lead the business forward for continued growth.
Liu Jun
Lenovo executive VP

It’s important to note that Osterloh is not titled as CEO, however, and is instead the president and chief operating officer of the company. Osterloh is no stranger to Motorola, and previously headed up the company’s product management group.

It’s hard to say whether or not Lenovo plans to keep Osterloh as Motorola’s head once the dust fully settles, though their initial comments seem to suggest it is certainly a possibility that Osterloh will continue to be a key part of Motorola during and after the transition to Lenovo.

Motorola still has a long road ahead

For Osterloh and company, Motorola still has a long journey ahead of it, and it’s still hard to say exactly what the company will look like a year from now, let alone five or ten years out.

To Motorola’s credit, they seem to be on the right path, even if it’s a slow-going one. In particular, Motorola has seen a great deal of success with its budget-oriented Moto G. Recently Motorola revealed the Moto G was the best-selling smartphone in the company’s history, beating out popular Droid devices even. Additionally, the Moto G has done very well in select European markets, with Motorola now controlling about 6% of the smartphone market in the UK.

Although the Moto 360 won’t arrive until sometime later this year, the initial excitement generated by the announcement of the company’s unique round smartwatch also seems like a good sign for the company.

What do you think, are you cautiously optimistic about the future of Motorola under Lenovo? Do you think that Osterloh is the right man to lead, or do you wish Woodside would have stayed on? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Motorola Assist and Motorola Camera updated, bug fixes and a few other changes

motorola-assist

Motorola is introducing new updates to two of its apps, Motorola Assist and Motorola Camera.

For Motorola Assist, the big change here is that you can now choose which calendar you wish for the app to monitor, which is very handy for those folks that keep multiple calendars such as one for work and one for personal.

Once you choose which calendar you want to link with Assist, the app will then monitor the calendar and automatically mute itself during scheduled meetings (just like before). Motorola also notes that there are several bug fixes in the update.

As for the Motorola Camera? In addition to bug fixes, Motorola is now adding the ability to take pictures on your phone by hitting the volume key on your phone or Bluetooth headset. A minor change, but still useful for those that like the idea of pushing a physical button for taking a picture.

To grab the Motorola camera update for Google Play, you’ll want to click here. The Motorola Assist update is also available now on Google Play.
