Official CyanogenMod support re-ignites the flame for 2012 Kindle Fire HD

cyanogenmod nexus 5 boot screen aa 1

Amazon is one of those companies that have successfully forked Android into their own ecosystem, particularly with the Kindle Fire line. Intended to be an e-reader and a tablet for consuming digital content, the Kindle Fire ran well with Amazon’s wide offering of e-books, movies and TV shows, as well as apps in the Amazon Appstore. While the Kindle Fire line’s market share is on the decline, Amazon enjoys a healthy revenue stream from the tablet from the sale of digital content.

But underneath it all, the tablet is a fairly capable Android device, and many an enthusiast actually bought the inexpensive Kindle Fire line in order to root and install custom ROMs. Most of these efforts were unsupported ROMs however, most of which were community supported. This is about to change, with the official CyanogenMod 11 support for the 2012 Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7″ and Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ introducing KitKat to the device.

Nightly builds are already available on official CM download channels, codenamed “tate” for the 7″ variant and “jem” for the 8.9″ device. These will require a rooted device with a custom recovery, which should not be difficult if you are into hacking and tweaking your Android device. Note that there is still no official CM support for the latest Kindle Fire HDX line.

Fire OS, the Android fork that comes with the Kindle Fire line is designed with simplicity in mind, and as such, it is considered to be very limited, especially by Android enthusiasts. Official CM11 support for the device should be a welcome development especially for users who are into breathing new life into older devices or repurposing these through custom ROMs.

Do you have a Kindle Fire HD? Are you looking into repurposing or reviving it with a custom ROM?

Using textPlus, users can have their Kindle device function as a phone without any contracts, data plans, or any hidden costs. This can help customers cut costs associated with communication dramatically using a Wi-Fi connection. Users can send inexpensive text messages within the United States and Canada for free and can make calls all around the world.

As an added benefit, textPlus also offers auto syncing across all devices which means your messages and calls are on all your devices. This is something that other competing services like Fongo have yet to implement into their apps so this comes as something that can differentiate their service from the competition. All texts and calls are free to other textPlus users as well.

"We're thrilled to be launching the next iteration of textPlus for Kindle Fire that truly turns Kindle Fire into a phone, making it easier and more convenient for our users to stay connected in non-traditional ways," - Scott Lahman, Co-Founder and CEO of textPlus.

The company provides free texting and calling to other 60 million textPlus users as well as inexpensive domestic and international calling. Users can use the service over any internet connection and the service can be used on a Kindle, a traditional Android device or an Apple device.

Will you be making use of this service? Please leave us a comment and tell us what you think about it.

The Kindle Fire is a great tablet for those who use Amazon’s services and it comes at a great price point which bodes well for those looking for budget friendly devices. Kindle also runs Android although the version of Android it runs is heavily modified it is very difficult to see it runs Android and with no Google Play store device around it becomes hard to use it like any other Android device. Thankfully though, you can install the Play Store on your actual Kindle with a little bit of work. This is how you do it.

In order for this to work, you will need to have your Kindle Fire rooted.

  1. First you need to download the ES File explorer from the Amazon App store. This will allow you to launch and transfer the files you require for this process.
  2. Download the Google Play files from here and extract the compressed files.
  3. In ES File Explorer, enable “root explorer” by simply going into your settings and choosing “root settings” and checking “super user”, “root explorer” and “mount file system” options.
  4. Return on the actual folder where you extracted the Google Play store files and then install the Google Services Framework apk file. Reboot your Kindle after doing this.
  5. Once the reboot is done, cut the vending.apk file and then paste it into the system/appdirectory.
  6. Tap and hold on the vending.apk file once it has been moved and choose properties. You will need to change the permissions of the file by making sure that “read”, “write” are checked for “user” and “read” is checked for group and other.
  7. Install the vending.apk on your device after doing this.
  8. Finally, you want to return to the folder where you extracted the files and install the gplay.apk file then reboot your Kindle.
  9. You will now be able to enjoy the Google Play store on your Kindle Fire device.

Have you tried this process out on your Kindle device? Please leave us a comment below to tell us how it went for you.

3 in 1: Samsung takes on iPad, Surface, and Kindle in just 60 seconds

Samsung regularly takes jabs at Apple, its biggest competitor, in its commercials, but for this new Galaxy TabPRO TV ad, the attacks are a bit more inclusive.

Yes, Samsung is taking potshots at the iPad, Microsoft Surface, and Kindle Fire in this one-minute spot, and while it’s not the classiest form of advertising, it’s probably effective. After all, nobody likes to be laughed at.

On a related note, Samsung is even more assertive in this older Pro series commercial, where it defines itself as a trendsetter that competition follows:

What do you think of Samsung’s marketing?
