instant video amazon Prime Instant Video Including‘Sopranos’ And ‘The Wire’

Classic HBO programming will soon be available on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The two companies announced the programming deal this morning. The first set of programming will hit the video streaming service starting on May 21. HBO Go will also finally hit the Amazon Fire TV by the end of 2014.
The programming list includes The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound & Down, Family Tree, Enlightened, Treme, early seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, as well as mini-series like Band of Brothers and John Adams and comedy specials from Lewis Black, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK and Bill Maher. Previous seasons of other HBO shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available three years after originally airing.
No word on Game of Thrones or Silicon Valley.
This is the first time HBO programming was licensed to an online-only subscription streaming service. It’s a big win for Amazon, giving the video streaming service a major advantage over competitors.
This move is likely a way to monetize older HBO content long forgotten and advertise its stellar pedigree. Before Game Of Thrones, The Wire and The Sopranos were the darlings of television. They’re fantastic shows. By making the whole series available for binge watching, HBO is effectively advertising its current content in the hopes of snagging more subscribers.
Netflix did not immediately respond for comment. They’re likely still reeling back in their office chairs and hyperventilating in discarded DVD mailers.

Native Advertising Startup Adyoulike Acquires Content Amp For $2.5M

French native advertising company Adyoulike acquired Content Amp. According to Rude Baguette, the British company was acquired for $2.5 million. Adyoulike appears to be at the same time an advertising technology company and a more traditional advertising network for native content.

An ad-tech company in native advertising seems counterintuitive — native ads are blog posts, articles and content after all. But for partner publishers, Adyoulike will target your readers, distribute, and let you monitor your ad performance.

Adyoulike also works with brands to create native advertising campaigns and adapt them for multiple formats. One of Adyoulike’s key features is that its native ads can be responsive. If you go to a website in particular on your laptop and on your phone, you will see the same ad in a different format depending on your device.

Content Amp is a more traditional advertising company. It has its own network of websites, and it sells native ads for them. In addition to building this platform, the company also works with brands to create native advertising campaigns.

The acquisition is an easy way for Adyoulike to expand its team in the U.K. The two companies work in native advertising and were probably about to compete for the same clients. This acquisition proves once again that French entrepreneurs are efficient when it comes to developing advertising technology startups.

Ran Harnevo On AOL’s Video Strategy And The Web’s “Massive Wave” Of Original Content

We’re a few weeks away from the Digital Content NewFronts, where the big online companies pitch their upcoming programs to advertisers. So it seemed like a good time to sit down with Ran Harnevo, AOL’s president of video, to talk about the company’s plans, and about broader trends in the industry.

Harnevo suggested that House of Cards on Netflix became “a defining moment” in “a massive wave” in original programming on the web. In its own way, AOL is participating in that wave too, he said, with 15 new shows launched last year and “a totally different breadth of content” to be announced at the NewFronts.

“I think that the beautiful thing about the Internet, from its beginning, is that it’s non-linear and essentially there’s much more creative freedom,” Harnevo said. “A talent like Steve Buscemi or Sarah Jessica Parker or whomever, if they have passion proejcts that they really really care about, if you go on TV and it doesn’t work [in the] first episode, second episode, you’re either out or you need to change. Primetime is so expensive that there’s not a lot of flexibility and not a lot of authenticity.”

Even with those celebrity names, it may seem strange to discuss AOL (which owns TechCrunch) as a major video publisher. Harnevo said that when it comes to video, the company may have less name recognition because it’s taking more “open” approach, distributing its videos across a number of properties.

“Vimeo and YouTube are easier to grasp because it’s big, but it’s one product,” he said.

Estimate Your Blood Alcohol Content with Wolfram Alpha

Estimate Your Blood Alcohol Content with Wolfram Alpha

Wolfram Alpha is the place to go to do all kinds of calculations, you can even use it to estimate your blood alcohol level after you've put away a few drinks.

Note that this will only be an estimate, since it ignores variations in metabolism, food intake, medication, and so on. As always, we don't recommend you use this to judge whether you can drive—it'll never be accurate enough to judge whether you're legal, and no matter how well you may think you handle your liquor, don't drink and drive.

All that out of the way, it's a pretty interesting little tool. Here's what you do:

  1. Go to Wolfram Alpha.
  2. In the search box, input the following: BAC 5 drinks, 3 hours, male, 180lb (change the number of drinks, the period of time you spent drinking, and your weight.)
  3. Click the = button or press Enter on your keyboard. The results will be displayed.

It'll show you what your blood alcohol percentage is, and even show you a graph of (roughly) how long it'll take to get back down to 0%. Again, it's not perfect—and it shouldn't judge whether you're sober enough to drive—but it is pretty cool.

CopyQ Runs Commands and Scripts on Content Copied to the Clipboard

CopyQ Runs Commands and Scripts on Content Copied to the Clipboard

Windows: We've featured plenty of clipboard managers before. Where CopyQ stands out is its ability to run commands or scripts on content you copy to the clipboard based on which type of content it is.

At its most basic level, CopyQ is a simple clipboard manager. It logs any content you save to the clipboard, you can edit clipboard contents with the CopyQ editor, and move selected items up or down the list to keep some of them around. However, go to File > Preferences > Commands and you get a world of new options.

Based on filtering options such as the type of the content (such as a URL or an image), the contents of what's copied, or what window it's copied from, you can set CopyQ to automatically perform certain actions. Common tasks include opening a URL in a new tab, encrypt/decrypt files, or run your own shell scripts.

Small Businesses: Why You Should Focus on Your Visual Content

Editor’s note: This is a contributed post by Payman Taei, founder of HindSite Interactive, an award-winning web design and development company that creates custom web and mobile sites and applications for businesses and organizations.

You’ve been working hard and churning out long-ish blog posts and articles along with a few images but to your dismay, you’re still not getting enough traffic or engagement on your blog. In this age of all sorts of big data, people are often bombarded with a lot of information they either don’t need or don’t know how to consume.

Three-sentence paragraphs, bullet points, sub-headings and bold font can only do so much to hold someone’s attention on your blog. It’s probably time to take your visual strategy to the next level.

But there’s an easy way to do it. If you want more people to read, share and engage with your content, visual content is a perfect answer to hold the attention of busy, distracted and hyper-engaged people.

Visual includes everything you can think of and have seen on a blog — infographics, graphs, piecharts, videos, memes, cartoons, maps etc. Using visuals, your message is conveyed much quicker and more effectively than writing a 1000-word article. Not only that, visuals get shared a lot more than text.

Still not convinced? Here are 6 reasons why you should consider going visual.

1. Visuals are snackable

Big data is making people restless – we want to consume more and in less time. Visuals fit the bill perfectly. They are snackable, yet provide immense value.

The Two Leaves tea company’s website hardly looks like your typical e-commerce site. It’s got stunning photos of their products and a tea-picker as the background of the site’s pages. This sets them apart from their competition as a refreshing brand and also highlights their hand-picked tea. Natural!

2. Visuals are Memorable

Depending on how you utilize them, visuals have the potential to be as memorable as you want them to be. Who can forget the success kid meme used so cleverly by Virgin Media? Surely this made you chuckle, didn’t it? There’s nothing more “visible" than visuals.

Another example is the yTravel Blog. Run by a husband and wife team, their Facebook page regularly posts of travel tips among other visuals on their social media page. They’ve obtained 26,000+ likes on Facebook and 4.3 million followers on Pinterest by using this simple visual strategy.

3. Visuals are attractive

Open a magazine and you’ll notice the first thing that grabs your attention is a visual. It could be an ad or a featured article. Heck, you probably bought the magazine in the first place because of its cover, right?

Design-made-easy program Canva uses a lot of beautiful and shareable design tips that don’t need much text to accompany them.

The point here is that visuals attract attention. It’s all about making sure that you use the right visual for your marketing to create an impact in your customer’s mind.

4. We’re wired for this stuff

Did you know that cute images arouse the same pleasure centers in your brain the same way sex, a good meal or drugs does? 90% of the information that come to our brain is visual. It’s also processed 60,000 times faster than text.

Hence, why your brain just loves visual content. This is why marketing company and blog, HubSpot, uses cheeky YouTube videos to teach marketing lessons. Their YouTube channel page uses humor to present a point in their videos. And what’s not to love about their Gangnam Style parody, aptly titled "Inbound Style"?

The work that they’re doing using visuals must be working as they’ve now got more than 200,000 likes on YouTube.

5. Everyone "Gets" Visuals

The great thing about visuals is that they’re in a universal language that everyone can understand and remember. Take a look at your social media feed and you’ll realize that what cuts the noise is probably an image or a video.

The reason is visuals will simplify complex ideas (infographics, graphs), tell a story or teach a concept (video scribes, illustrations) and overall, improve a reader’s experience. Dan Zarrella explains the effect of hashtags and quotes using two simple graphs.

He found that the effect of hashtags boosted retweets by 55% and tweets with quotation marks increased retweets by 30%.

But what if your clients are businesses? Can you use visual marketing successfully? Turns out, yes you can.

B2B email marketing company, Constant Contact, is killing it on Pinterest. Their “Quotes for Small Business Owners" board ranks #2 on Google, with more than 6,000 board followers. To top it off, they’ve neatly divided their page into 111 boards so there’s something is for everyone. The result? More than 21K followers on Pinterest.

6. Visuals are like roadmaps

A good visual strategy will show your readers what they should do next. Should they click on an “Add to Cart" button? Do they leave a comment? Where do they go next?

In this way, they build trust. They lay a roadmap for your visitors while humanizing your interaction with them, as demonstrated by the previous HubSpot video. Once people “like" you, they become better prospects and are more receptive to what you suggest.

Conclusion

Visual marketing should be one of your objectives in 2014. You may want to hire a graphics person to design visual elements. Yes, it could be an expensive investment but in the long run, it should pay off.

But, if you’re lacking in finances or more of a DIY person, there are easy-to-use online tools that you can use to create infographics, CTA banners, presentations, animations etc for free.

Don’t just stop there – make sure you also test your efforts. Measure what’s working and what’s not. You never know, 2014 could be the year that you go viral!

Google expands ability to access app content from within Google Search, adds 24 new apps and global support

open-in-app
Last year Google began partnering with select app makers in order to bring an “Open in app” button within Google Search results on your Android devices. Basically this made it easy to search for something and then quickly jump directly into your favorite apps to view the content such as Wikipedia, Open Table and a few others.

Now Google is expanding its efforts to connect popular apps with its keyword search results, bringing the feature to English-speaking markets outside of the United States and adding 24 new apps partners including:

500px, AOL, BigOven, Bleacher Report, Booking.com, Eventbrite, Glassdoor, Goodreads, Huffington Post, Merriam-Webster, Pinterest, Realtor.com, Seeking Alpha, TalkAndroid, TheFreeDictionary, The Journal, TripAdvisor, Tumblr, Urbanspoon, Wattpad, YP, Zagat, Zappos and Zillow.

Although quite a few apps now support this feature, it’s interesting to note that both Facebook and Twitter are currently unsupported. What do you think, like the added convenience of being able to easily view content from you search results directly through your favorite apps? What other apps would you like to see bring support for this feature?

Google Play gets a ‘People’ section, lets you know what content others are using

gp4

Curious what kind of apps your friends and folks you follow might recommend? Thanks to a new change to the Google Play app, you can do just that by bringing up the “People” section within Play’s menu.

The first time you open the People section you’ll be able to opt in and from there you’ll see several familiar faces, as well as major tech publications and other businesses. Clicking on a person/business brings open a sub menu and shows just some of their app activity. You can also view these users full Google+ profiles, though that will push you out of the Play app and over to G+.

This is certainly a fun way to discover new apps, while also potentially learning a bit more about the app habits of your friends, family and others you follow. So how do you get in on the update? Actually, it’s turned on server side, so no update is required. We can confirm that the app is live in the midwest US, and likely many other parts of the world as well.
