Sony Xperia Z2 tablet arrives to the U.S., priced at $499

Although the Sony Xperia Z2 has yet to arrive in the United States, at least Sony fans will now have the opportunity to grab the Xperia Tablet Z2. The tablet Z2 is available for pre-order through Sony’s website as we speak, with an estimated shipping date set for May 4th.

At MWC we noted that the tablet had rather impressive specs and was a solid improvement over the original tablet Z, unfortunately it’s also a bit on the expensive side at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model. So what kind of specs does $499 bring you? The Xperia tablet Z2 is powered by a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU with 3GB of RAM. Other specs include a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200, front-facing speakers, a water/dust resistant design, an 8.1MP camera and Android 4.4 KitKat.

Free movies and games for some Sony Xperia Z1s, Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablet owners

Sony is giving away more than a dozen free movies and games to owners of Xperia Z1s, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablets in a small handful of countries. In total, 6 movies and 8 PlayStation Mobile games will be available through the Xperia Lounge application on your device, but only after you install Sony’s new Xperia Lounge companion app, called Pass, from the Google Play Store.

The process is pretty simple, head into your Xperia Lounge app and tap on the indicated promotions, if you’ve got them. If you do not yet have Pass installed you will be directed to it, otherwise, tap to receive vouchers to obtain the movies and games for free. The movie promotion ends on July 31, 2014, but you’ll have until the end of October to redeem your vouchers. Gamers do not have as much time to mess around, the free game promotion ends June 30, 2014, and you’ll have to redeem before July 14.

Nexus 8 to replace both Nexus Tablet lines? (Rumour)

The Nexus 8 has not yet even been announced but speculation is rife over what is going to happen when the next device from Google drops. The Nexus 10 which came out in 2012, around the same time that the famed Nexus 4 dropped is still to receive its successor. The successor to the Nexus 10 did not come in 2013 as hoped and when the device disappeared from the Google Play Store we thought Google was readying an update. Alas when the Nexus 10 did return it was the same 2012 device.

We only have the Nexus 8 to look forward to right now and it seems as if this is the device which is going to take the reigns from the 2013 Nexus 7 device. The line is 7 inch line which has been so successful is set to be retired this year but with plenty of 7 inch tablets on the market nowadays it is becoming harder and harder to stand out in the market place.

8 inch tablets seem to be a place where the Nexus line can thrive though. The concept drawing of what the Nexus 8 may look like really drives home the point of how good this device could actually be. The slate may have a 2K touchscreen, 8.2 inches, or perhaps an 8.9 inch screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, probably the 801 or 805 and about 3 GB of RAM. These specs would see the device become a go to tablet and something that can legitimately compete with the Apple iPad mini.

It would be a shame if this device lands in between the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 but at least you wouldn’t need to spend money on three different device in order to get the best from Google any more.

T-Mobile announces Tablet Freedom: 1GB extra data and 4G LTE tablets for Wi-Fi prices

Yesterday T-Mobile announced its new $40 Simple Starter plan, kicking off a three-day series of uncarrier announcements. For round 2, today T-Mobile unveiled that it will be introducing a new initiative called “Tablet Freedom”. Simply put, Tablet Freedom is about bringing cellular connections to your tablet as cheap as possible.

T-Mobile plans to do this is a few ways: First, it is now offering all of its 4G LTE capable tablets for the same price as you’ll find their Wi-Fi counterparts. Second, any newly purchased tablet will get an additional 1GB free data each month, combined with the 200MB free data you already get for tablet devices. T-Mobile’s press release also includes a few other points related to trading in your existing Wi-Fi tablet, participating in the Jump program and their commitment to paying off your ETFs.

T-Mobile’s Tablet Freedom program will officially go into effect the same day as its Starter plan, April 12th. Now we’re just left wondering what tomorrow’s announcement will bring. What do you think of the new Tablet Freedom initiative? Anyone tempted to pick up a tablet via T-Mobile?

BELLEVUE, Wash. – April 10, 2014 –T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) has revealed the second in a series of rapid-fire initiatives designed to advance the Un-carrier consumer revolution on multiple fronts. The company today launched Operation Tablet Freedom, a program that lets you add a tablet to your postpaid voice plan for free. Beginning April 12th, customers can get nearly 1.2 GB of free 4G LTE data every month through 2014 on America’s fastest nationwide LTE network.

“With this announcement, T-Mobile’s launching a full-on assault against the restrictions and pain points that keep tablet owners from experiencing life beyond the Wi-Fi zone,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “The Un-carrier is all about solving pain points, and today we’re eliminating every reason to be stuck on an unconnected Wi-Fi-only tablet. There’s no longer any need to limit the use of your tablet because you’re intimidated by Big Blue, Bad Red or Bumbling Yellow.”

First, cellular-enabled 4G LTE tablets are more expensive than Wi-Fi-only models. Second, even if you’ve put down the extra money for that cellular-enabled tablet, committing to a long-term data plan for it can be pretty intimidating. And, finally, most people with tablets are stuck with their old Wi-Fi only model, and those who do have cellular models are often stuck in overpriced carrier contracts.

Today the vast majority of American tablet owners are stuck on Wi-Fi or stuck in carrier contracts. That’s about to change.

If you’re stuck on Wi-Fi, you can now come to T-Mobile and upgrade to a 4G LTE-enabled model for nothing down and pay no more than you’d pay for the cheaper Wi-Fi-only model, with any postpaid activation on a 1GB or more mobile internet plan with no annual service contract. For example, pay the Wi-Fi price of $499 instead of $630 for the 4G LTE-enabled 16GB iPad Air. Or pay the Wi-Fi price of $200 instead of $312 for the 4G LTE Samsung Tab 3. Voice customers adding the 1GB tablet plan for free for the rest of 2014 also fully qualify for these reduced prices.

If you’re stuck in a contract with your old carrier, the Un-carrier will pay every penny of your early termination fees (ETFs) when you make the switch to T-Mobile. Just bring in your tablets to receive an instant credit based on their value. Then purchase any tablet at the new lower same-as-Wi-Fi prices.  Customers may even qualify for zero down financing with 24 monthly payments. After receiving the final bill from your old carrier showing your ETFs, just mail it in or upload it to www.switch2tmobile.com. T-Mobile then sends an additional payment covering every last penny of those fees.

And, for both new and existing customers, T-Mobile is offering $10 off its most popular internet data plans starting April 12th through the end of 2014. Chrome OS updated with on-screen keyboard – is a Chrome OS tablet coming?

Amid speculation of an incoming Chrome OS tablet, Google updated today its cloud-based operating system with an on-screen keyboard and several other features.

The stable channel of Chrome OS was updated to version 34.0.1847.118, which brings bug fixes, performance improvements, and a few interesting new features. Among the highlights of the update, Google’s Chrome team mentions:

  • The ability to dock windows or panels to the sides of the screen;
  • Offline Google Drive backup will be enabled automatically for all users after first login;
  • The addition of an on-screen keyboard;
  • Sticky keys, which allows users to perform keyboard shortcuts by pressing one key at the time, instead of simultaneously.

The addition of the on-screen keyboard has been long in coming, with the first clues of the feature being spotted in development channels more than a year ago. So, while its arrival is no surprise, it seems a bit odd that Google would bother to add an on-screen keyboard in Chrome OS for use with a touchpad or a mouse. More likely, Google is prepping Chrome OS for the arrival of touch-enabled Chromebooks or, possibly, of a Chrome OS-powered tablet.

That leads us to a report from ZDNet that mentions an Acer event scheduled for late April that could see the introduction of the first ever Chrome OS tablet. The argument is the tagline of the event invitation, which reads “A touch more connected.”

Is Acer teasing a Chrome OS tablet? It’s hard to tell for sure, but ZDNet’s reasoning makes sense. One of the biggest Chromebook makers, Acer is one of the two OEMs that Google chose to launch the concept back in 2011, along with Samsung. While not very successful in the tablet business, Acer has the expertise to create a competitive Chrome OS tablet, and, because its Android tablets are lagging, the incentive to try new things.

But then again, Acer could simply be referring to a touchscreen-equipped Chromebook or something unrelated.

One thing is sure for now – Google is building up Chrome OS for touch devices, and it’s only a matter of time before the first such device hits the market. Several other touch-oriented features spotted in the Chrome OS source support this theory.

Whether this class of devices will be successful or not is an entirely different discussion. The biggest question is – why would you pick a Chrome tablet over an Android one?

Snapdragon 805 developer tablet is a peek at tomorrow’s high-end devices

Qualcomm’s new development platform based on the Snapdragon 805 packs some amazing features.

Manufactured by Intrinsyc, the Mobile Development Platform Tablet (MDP/T) is meant to offer app and game developers early access to the processor that will power most high-end Android devices coming in the second part of the year. To accommodate as many use cases as possible, the 10-inch tablet is packed to the gills with features, and some of them are quite exotic.

Starting with the brains of the device, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor combines four mighty Krait 450 cores running at up to 2.7GHz each with an Adreno 420 GPU, the first mobile GPU to offer geometry shaders and hardware tessellation for amazing 3D graphics. There’s also a Hexagon QDSP6 V5A (600MHz) DSP chip to make sense of data from all the sensors, 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and 64GB eMMC 5.0 storage.

To get to the really sexy stuff, the MDP/T comes with dual front 3D infrared cameras that can recognize gestures and a 13MP rear camera capable of recording 4K content. There are no fewer than seven microphones on the device, which can be used for surround sound recording and for another amazing trick – recognizing input from an ultrasound emitting stylus.

As you can briefly see in the video above at the 1:00 mark, Qualcomm’s Fluence Pro technology lets users write on any surface using a special stylus, and the movement of the tip of the stylus is accurately transmitted to the tablet in real time. The tech seems to be based on the work of Israeli company EPOS, which Qualcomm acquired back in 2012.

The Snapdragon 805 development tablet also comes with a fingerprint scanner, hardware-based HEVC (H.265) video decoding, dual-band two stream Wi-Fi, and 7.1 channel playback speakers. The battery is a just 3,400 mAh, but that’s because the device is meant to be used on a desk, plugged in an AC source, rather than on the go.

Android OEMs probably won’t implement all of these features in their Snapdragon 805-based smartphones and tablets coming from this summer. But Qualcomm’s development platform does give us an idea of the performance and features of mobile devices six months from now.

Sony puts their new Xperia Z2 Tablet up for sale in the UK

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is up for sale on Sony’s UK website. UK customers can order now, choosing the 16GB WiFi only unit for £399, upgrade to the 32GB model for £449 or grab up the 16GB LTE version for £499.

For those with slippery fingers, order before March 24 straight from the Sony online store and they’ll give you a 3 year warranty for just 1 pence more.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is what we might call the big brother of the Xperia Z2 smartphone, which is expected to be in customers’ hands in April. The tablet is powered by Android 4.4 KitKat and comes with a quad-core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM and an 8.1MP camera. Both devices were announced at MWC in February where we took the water resistant, 10.1-inch Full HD TILUMINOUS display tablet for a test run, see what we had to say about it.

best-of-mwc-sony-xperia-tablet-z2We have seen a lot of positive hype about the Xperia Z2 smartphone, a lot of which is focused on the 20.7MP camera with the ability to shoot 4K video. The Xperia Z2 Tablet, as might be expected of a tablet, does not come with the same powerhouse of a camera sensor, but their 8.1MP camera with Exmor RS™ for mobile will still let you snap Full HD images and video. Aside from the camera sensor difference, and the screen size, obviously, the phone and tablet share a lot of specifications, and as the phone represents Sony’s latest and greatest, so should we expect of the tablet.

Seeing that this is Sony’s flagship tablet for the year, our choice for best tablet at MWC, and chalk full of high-end goodness, it necessarily comes with what you may consider a steep price tag. Are you interested enough in this tablet to dish over the equivalent of US$658 – US$825?

Report: Rumored HTC Nexus tablet may feature 8.9-inch display

Back in February, a report surfaced out of Taiwan that claimed HTC had won a bid to build a new high-end Nexus tablet. Since then, we’ve heard very little else about this rumor, until today.

According to the research firm IHS Technology, Google and HTC are teaming up to create an 8.9-inch “high-performance” Nexus device. IHS’ Rhoda Alexander indicates volume production “is expected to start in July or August. The expectation is [that] this will be a lower volume product, carrying a premium price tag to support the specifications.” Alexander says she is unsure of the pricing that Google is targeting, but wouldn’t be surprised if it arrives with a tag higher than $299.

In other words, the HTC Nexus 8.9 would be a high-end alternative that co-exists with the Nexus 7, and perhaps even the Nexus 10. While the latter two tablets are geared more towards everyday consumers, the Nexus 8.9 would be a premium device that climbs further upmarket — sort of like what Samsung is trying to accomplish with the Galaxy Pro series.

So would such a move actually make sense? Maybe. While some folks are perfectly happy with the plastic (yet still high quality) builds of devices like the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, an aluminum body tablet with boomsound speakers certainly sounds like a nice alternative for those looking for something a bit more ‘premium’ looking.

On the other hand, IHS doesn’t specify where it is getting this information from, and might simply be building on existing rumors we’ve heard from publications like Focus Taiwan. Bottom-line, we’d take the whole rumor with a grain of salt for now.
