Gadget Gosspot,Spotify for Android gets a new look, adds a few other changes

Earlier this month the web, desktop and iOS versions of Spotify saw a redesign that featured a darker theme and a less complicated interface. On the time, Android users had been overlooked of the darkish (see what I did there?), however no longer.

As of today, the new Spotify experience is rolling out to Android users. That said, this is a staged rollout and may take a few weeks to reach everyone. For those that don’t wish to wait any longer than they have to, Spotify is offering the APK directly from their website.

So what exactly is new here, aside from a redesigned look? Probably the biggest change outside of the new design language is the addition of “Your Music”, which replaces “Collections”. This is more than just a name change, as the new music section allows you to directly save albums to your music list, something you previously couldn’t do.

There’s also improvements to the “Browse” feature, offering better, more relevant content according to Spotify. This change includes a new “Genres & Moods” section that has things like mood, party, pop, workout and several other categories.

Overall, Spotify feels less cluttered and easier to use then before. Of course it also is a bit of an adjustment for regular Spotify users. To check out the app update for yourself, you can either grab it via Spotify’s website or through Google Play.
What do you consider the brand new look? Like it, or do you favor the original UI?

Cognoa’s App Will Evaluate Children’s Risk For Autism From Videos And Other Data

Follow_up_-_leenakrao_gmail.com_-_GmailThere are life-changing technologies that are being developed at the intersection of health evaluation and diagnosis. For example, Neurotrack has developed a cognitive test to predict and diagnose the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. And a new startup, Cognoa, is launching to help evaluate children’s risk for Autism.

As CEO Brent Vaughan explained to me, the incidence of autism has risen to 1 in 68 children in the United States, and the incidence of all learning delays in children is now close to 1 in 5. Families are faced with enormous individual challenges to navigate through the complex healthcare ecosystem to understand their child’s risk and how to take action. And the average lag time between an initial warning sign and a diagnosis of autism or other developmental condition is around 13 months, with the average waiting time to see a specialist who can provide a clinical diagnosis around 1 year. By the time children get through the system to the clinical professionals, they’ve lost the time to benefit from intervention programs, which are known to be more effective in younger children. Once the child receives an official diagnosis, families are often left to determine alone how to manage their child’s care and therapy.

Cognoa’s test on the iPhone evaluates the risk for developmental delay and autism for children before the age of 3. The app asks parents set of questions around your child’s behavioral tendencies (i.e. will your child play with peers when in a group with two or more other children), and the app also allows parents to take a home video under 5 minutes showing a child in a simple set of activities.

With this data, Cognoa’s test analyzes the video and answers to the questions and will provide an assessment on whether the child has a risk for autism. The technology on the back-end was developed by Dr. Dennis Wall, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where his lab is developing statistical approaches to decode the complexity of autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. It’s important to differentiate that Cognoa isn’t actually diagnosing, but instead just evaluating whether there could be a developmental risk.

It’s still early days to determine the efficacy of the test but Cognoa has been tested in several studies and over 20,000 times, and is showing accuracy of evolution at and above 90% in children under 4 years old and as young as 13 months.

Chainfire’s Galaxy S5 root method now works with US Cellular, T-Mobile and several other models

samsung galaxy s5 aa (1 of 36)

Even though the Samsung Galaxy S5 is just now touching down to retailers across the globe, the handset has actually had a root method in place for nearly a month thanks to the efforts of well-known developer Chainfire!

When we first reported on Chainfire’s root method, it only directly supported Galaxy S5 model SM-G900F. Fast-forwarding to today, Chainfire has now formally added a few other models to the support list: SM-900H (International Exynos), SM-G900M (Middle and South America), SM-G900R4 (US Cellular), SM-G900T (T-Mobile US), SM-G900T1 (Metro PCS) and SM-G900W8 (Canada).

So what’s involved here? Chainfire’s method is designed to be as beginner friendly as possible and utilizes the latest version of the CF-Auto-Root tool. Once downloaded, the tool can be flashed to your device using Samsung’s ODIN on your PC. The process works by temporarily modifying your device’s recovery, it then installs the SuperSU app and re-flashes your recovery back to stock form.

For more detailed instructions and to grab the proper files, you’ll want to head on over to the XDA developer forum. Has anyone already tried out Chainfire’s CF-Auto-Root method on any of the above-model Galaxy S5 devices? If so, let us know how it went.

Chrome Beta update brings undo button for closed tabs, and ‘some’ other stuff

Chrome for Android Beta

Google’s Chrome Beta on Android has a few new tricks up its sleeve. Admittedly, we’ve already seen these features on the desktop browser, but now possible on Android will be the ability to reopen a closed tab, fullscreen HTML5 video playback, support for some multi-window supporting devices and the ability to send some video to your Chromecast.

We are always excited to see new features injected into Google’s Chrome Beta browser. Not only are new features exciting for the bleeding edge users that enjoy the beta channel, but, true to the ‘beta’ moniker, they serve as a strong indicator of possible things to come for the normal Chrome browser.

The ability to reopen your last closed tab operates as a small popup with an Undo button, visually very similar to the ‘undo’ notification you may be familiar with in your Gmail on the desktop. You’ll see it at the bottom of your screen for a few seconds after closing a tab, making it best for recovery of accidental closes. This feature only works for the last tab closed, but there is a Recent tabs option in the main menu if you need to go back further.

Chrome Beta Undo Closed Tab

Fullscreen HTML5 video playback supports subtitles and has on-screen controls, but Google says that the controls are not yet complete, so beware of that. Multi-window support is only available for some devices. There is no list of which multi-window capable devices Chrome Beta now supports, they simply say it works for some. We’ll have to keep our eye on this as it matures, it will be interesting to see which devices are actually supported and how the feature operates.

ChromecastSimilarly to the support of ‘some’ devices for multi-window support, Chromecast support will only work for some video types. With a notable absence, you will not be able to cast YouTube videos from the browser, but there is always the YouTube app for that. Sadly, in our quick tests of the most popular video services, we could not find any videos that would cast, but we’re still very excited to watch this evolve into a solid feature, just one step closer to our dream of being able to cast an entire Chrome tab from Android.

As is usually the case, Google offers no promises as to if or when these features may graduate to the mainstream Chrome browser that most of us have on our Android devices. For now, you’ll have to install or update your Chrome Beta from the Google Play Store if you want to take these new features a spin.

Are you a Chrome Beta user, or do you prefer to just wait for features to hit the stable release? If you have already been testing out the new features, what do you think so far?

Hide Spare Cash or Other Secret Stuff in a Hidden Wall Compartment

We all need to hide stuff every once in a while. YouTube user supergokue1 shows how to create a small compartment in the wall where you can stash some valuables.

To begin with, he pulled off a small piece of trim between two doors. He then cut out a piece of dry wall to make a small cubby hole. By simply placing the trim back in place, your valuables are hidden out of site. As a couple commenters point out, you can use velcro or magnets to ensure the trim doesn't idly fall off. If you want to make extra sure that the compartment isn't discovered, you can re-seal the trim with the original nails. This will make it harder to remove again, but also help ensure no one stumbles on to your stash.

As Three Thrifty Guys points out, hiding spots like these for valuables were much more common during the Great Depression when trust in banks was eroding. You can check out their post on the subject at the via link below for more tips on where to hide your valuables around the house.

Spotify updated, adds follow features and a few other changes

Spotify

A new update has arrived for Spotify, bringing several new features with it. Probably the biggest change is the ability to follow people directly from your profile. According to the change-log you can simply tap the friends icon to find people you know and discover what kinds of tunes they listen to.

In addition to the ‘follow’ changes for the Android app, there are also a few other minor changes listed in the change-log including the ability to long press to delete previously played stations in Radio mode, and new “pretty images” in the playlists. While not specifically mentioned, we imagine that there are also at least a few unspecified bug fixes.

As you can see, this might not be a major update, but there are still a few welcome changes. Now if Spotify would just get its act together and introduce Chromecast support, but I digress. To grab the latest app update you’ll want to head on over to Google Play.

Motorola Assist and Motorola Camera updated, bug fixes and a few other changes

motorola-assist

Motorola is introducing new updates to two of its apps, Motorola Assist and Motorola Camera.

For Motorola Assist, the big change here is that you can now choose which calendar you wish for the app to monitor, which is very handy for those folks that keep multiple calendars such as one for work and one for personal.

Once you choose which calendar you want to link with Assist, the app will then monitor the calendar and automatically mute itself during scheduled meetings (just like before). Motorola also notes that there are several bug fixes in the update.

As for the Motorola Camera? In addition to bug fixes, Motorola is now adding the ability to take pictures on your phone by hitting the volume key on your phone or Bluetooth headset. A minor change, but still useful for those that like the idea of pushing a physical button for taking a picture.

To grab the Motorola camera update for Google Play, you’ll want to click here. The Motorola Assist update is also available now on Google Play.
