Vine for Android gets an update, introduces private video messaging

Vine is already a great way to share short video clips with the world, but a new app update is about to make the experience even better by introducing Vine messages.

The Vine Messages system is a new communication feature that allows you to sent direct Vine video messages to anyone, even those that aren’t part of the Vine community. To send Vines to non-members, you can use their email address or send them via SMS.

Aside from allowing you to share videos with the new messaging system, you can also start a conversation around it and friends can respond directly to the video message and add comments of their own. This allows for much deeper conversations than the one line comment system used on public videos.

While the Vine messaging system is the biggest change heading to the new update, the change-log also mentions that you can now customize your profile with colors. There’s several bug fixes and performance improvements promised as well.

Facebook Messenger gets a new update, introduces free Wi-Fi calling

A new Facebook Messenger update is rolling out today bringing several new features to the table including the ability to create groups for those you message the most, forwarding of messages or photos to other contacts, and much more.

Probably the biggest change is that you can now make free calls over Wi-Fi. The option is also usable while on a data connection, though it isn’t necessarily recommended unless you have an unlimited data plan.

Here’s the full change-log highlighting what to expect in the latest update:

  • Groups: Now you can create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place
  • Forwarding: Want to send a message or photo to someone who isn’t in the conversation? Just tap to forward it on
  • Conversation Shortcuts: Create a shortcut so that you can get to any conversation right from your home screen
  • Free Calls: Talk as long as you want and stay in touch wherever you are. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply).

The update is available now directly through Google Play. While Facebook Messenger isn’t exactly the best messaging platform around by any means, some of today’s additions could certainly make it at least a bit more useful.

Google Play introduces separate change-logs for alpha, beta and production versions of apps

Up until now, developers had to use the same text for change-logs in Google Play, regardless of whether folks were interested in the alpha, beta or stable release of an app. In the latest update, it’s now easy for app makers to provide different change-logs for alpha testers, beta testers and just regular users looking to download the latest stable (production) version of an app.

This might not seem like a major change, but it’s still a welcome one. In short, it makes it easier for developers to convey what’s new in a specific version of their app without adding extra confusion for those downloading the standard app, or leaving beta/alpha testers in the dark about what’s new in these developmental builds.

It’s nice to see Google continually improving the layout and experience of the Google Play store with changes like these. Now here’s to hoping that developers actually make the changes needed to utilize the new separate “What’s New” descriptions.

Google Search update introduces ‘Take a Picture’ and ‘Take a video’ voice commands

Google search is getting a new update today that is designed to make it easier to take a picture or record a video without having to “fumble with your phone to open the camera app”.

The new voice commands are implemented at the back-end, meaning you won’t need a new version of Google Search for this to work. Keep in mind that the commands aren’t enabled for everyone just yet, so there’s a possibility they have yet to reach your device.

To open up your camera app using your voice, you simply need to launch Google Now and then say “take a photo” or “take a video”. Keep in mind, the feature doesn’t actually start recording a video or snap that photo instantly — instead it merely takes you to the photo or video mode of your default camera app.

While it’s always nice to see Google expanding the level of Now commands available to its users, it is hard to say how useful this will be once the novelty wears off. After all, it’s not particularly hard to tap the camera icon that’s in your dock or on your homescreen. What do you think, like this new “OK Google” addition or not?
