Tuenti Extends Its VoIP Call Function To iOS App

Tuenti, the mostly Latin-country-oriented mobile social network which exited to Telefonica in 2010, has been gradually iterating on its product offering and today releases its free voice calling service for its iPhone app. The move follows a similar update for its Android app. The free voice over IP feature is compatible with Android, Chrome and Opera.

The option for making voice over IP calls appears on the top right corner of the chat screen when users chat with a friend or contact, and the call history with each person is also displayed.

The new functionality will be available for iPhone devices (from the 3GS version and newer and with the iOS 6 operating system or higher), and users must update to the latest version of the Tuenti app for iOS (version 4.3) in order to enjoy all the new multi-platform features.

Tuenti also has a hybrid model in that it also runs its own mobile virtual network operator, meaning that Tuenti Móvil customers are able to make these calls using the Tuenti app without consuming cell phone data.

Its ‘Zerolímites’ package means customers can consumer data from their Bundle even if they have no credit remaining. So when your friend on Tuenti Móvil runs out of credit, they can still chat with you though the app. That just incentivises more people to sign up to Tuenti Móvil, knowing that their temporary cash flow issue won’t be a problem. Handy for cash-strapped teenager in Latin countries.

However, Telefonica’s number for the Tuenti Móvil are prtty low: It had 77,500 clients in 2012 and reported 165,000 at the end of 2013, so it’s hardly a smash hit right now.

Facebook removes chat function from main app, now requiring Messenger

Kris Carlon

Putting down roots in Berlin after six years of traveling is a major step for Kris Carlon, who has spent more time living out of a tent lately than sitting at a desk. Kris comes to the AndroidPIT Editorial Team via a lengthy period spent writing on art and culture in Australia and other places he has lived. He joined the Android community while resurfacing in civilization back in 2010 and has never looked back, using technology to replace his actual presence in other people's lives ever since.

There's lots of things that Facebook users don't like about the Facebook app, but there's now a big fat stinking new one to get all in a tizz about. Facebook has just announced plans to remove the instant messaging function from its primary app and instead require users to download the separate Messenger app to be able to chat on mobile devices.

Fans of Facebook's Messenger app, which got a nifty UI overhaul late last year and has been steadily adding functions like voice calling ever since, will welcome the removal of the doubling up of the messaging function. But many users who are just not that into their Facebook experience, or those who simply do not want to have two Facebook apps on their device where one previously sufficed, are upset that there is no longer an all-in-one Facebook app solution.

The changes are rolling out in the next couple of weeks, so you have a little time to decide if you want to join the twin-app bandwagon, or grumble and complain for the next two weeks until you cave in. There is, of course, always the option to ditch one or both of the official Facebook apps and simply install a third-party app that offers both the main site and chat options, and will probably be faster and better designed than Facebook's official offerings. At the very least this mean there's no chance that WhatsApp will eventually be absorbed by the Facebook app.

Are you already using Facebook Messenger? Are you for or against the separation and why?

There’s a new beta version of WhatsApp for Android that brings a new camera feature. On top of showing you this new function, we've also go the APK link for the update.

The new beta version under build number 2.11.209 doesn’t offer the awaited free calls just yet, like we saw arrive to Facebook Messenger with its most recent update four days ago. For the time being, there are only very minor changes, however it is still in development, meaning this isn't necessarily the final version. There isn’t much to see yet in terms of new functions, aside from two that really stand out.

New functions

After installing the APK and starting a conversation with a contact, you’ll spot the first of the changes. Next to the microphone icon on the bottom, there’s also a camera icon, giving you access to an in-app camera feature right from a conversation.

When tapping on it, you’ll be brought to the camera viewfinder screen that looks a little new as well. The interface is still simple, but now includes a flash icon to be able to change the flash from automatic, off or on. You still get the icon that serves the purpose of switching from back to front camera and vice versa. Now the name of the contact will also appear at the top part of the screen.

I also noticed that though the person receives the picture, there is no trace of it in the gallery app on my phone.

Here is the link for the WhatsApp for Android update APK.
