Update:
Sprint has made a few revisions to its User Agent profile listing for the LG-LS990 (LG G3). Fortunately the QHD display remains, instead the alterations affect the device’s RAM and camera specifications.
The handset’s RAM has dropped back down to 2GB from 3GB, putting it back inline with the LG G2. On the plus side, the camera modules have received a bump in resolution. The profile now lists the device as having a 16 megapixel rear camera, and the front facing sensor has also received a slight boost to 2.4 megapixels. We’ll have to wait and see what other changes this brings compared with the G2′s camera.
Finally, the software number has changed to “LS990ZV1″ but the profile still states that the device comes with Android 4.4.2, so the update is most likely making adjustments to LG’s specific features.

Back in mid-March a user agent profile from LG’s own website suggested that the upcoming LG G3 would come with a QHD (1440×2560) pixel resolution display. In fact, we’ve been hearing similar rumors since the beginning of the year. These details have been spotted once again, this time in a user agent profile from US carrier Sprint. As well as hinting yet again at a QHD display, the profile contains virtually an entire hardware spec sheet for LG’s next flagship smartphone.
The device in question is listed as the LG-LS990, which is expected to be the Sprint version of the LG G3, whilst the carrier-less version retains the D850 tag that we have seen before. If the QHD displays turns out to be correct, it’s likely that LG will be using the 5.5 inch QHD display that it already unveiled, which has a pixel density of 530ppi.
As well as display information, the UA suggests that the LG G3 will be sticking with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, like the one found in the G2, rather than the slightly updated Snapdragon 801 chip found in other new flagship handsets. Sadly then, this spec suggests that the G3 won’t be one of the first smartphones to feature the upcoming Snapdragon 805 SoC. LG also seems to have brought the RAM count up to 3GB this time around.

We already knew that the display on the Samsung Galaxy S5 is outstanding, both from our own hands-on time with the device and from the glowing assessment published by the experts at DisplayMate.
Now Samsung tries to hammer the point home with a post detailing some of the technical specifications of the Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy S5.
The company explains how the adaptive mode on the Galaxy S5 enables it to quickly change settings like brightness and contrast levels in order to reduce glare and maintain the screen usable even in bright daylight. According to Samsung, the S5 is able to output an Ambient Color Gamut (the set of colors discernible on the screen) that’s 1.6 times higher than an LCD display.

Another trick in the Galaxy S5’s book is the ability to change the white balance of the display in response to variations in ambient light. When using a device under colored light, your eyes tend to tint whites in the complementary color, e.g. blue light will make whites yellowish. As you can see in the GIF below, the S5 can change white balance to reduce the effect, thus delivering a better experience when reading or browsing the web.

Samsung goes on to tout the wide color gamut of its latest Super AMOLED screen, claiming its 1.4 larger than on TFT LCD (70% compared to 97%), as well as contrast levels, 77 times higher than on TFT LCD (1,300:1 compared 100,000:1).
These numbers look impressive on paper, but the picture is not as clear as Samsung paints it to be. There are many variants of LCD screens, and some, such as those on the Xperia Z2 (with its vibrancy boosting quantum dots) and the HTC One (M8) definitely give the Galaxy S5 a run for its money. So do make sure to check for yourself before buying a device – even a few minutes with a phone can help you make a decision you won’t regret later.

Amazon Phone leak shows 6 cameras and 3D display

There have been rumors surrounding the possibility of an Amazon phone in the making for quite some time now and it looks like we have some new hard evidence. The biggest surprises of all are the six cameras and a partial 3D display. What might seem like absurd rumors, might actually be true.

BGR was able to expose the first pictures of the supposed Amazon phone. Unfortunately the device was placed into a production case in order to not show the design, so we can’t say much about how it looks for the moment. The first thing we couldn't help notice though were not one, not two….but five front-facing cameras. Four of these have led to the rumor that this device will come allegedly with some 3D effects. What this exactly means and how far the feature will go is still yet to be discovered.

In terms of tech specs, at least one of the planned versions will come with 2 GB of RAM, a Snapdragon processor, a 720p display of 4.7 inches and a 13 MP main camera. Though this doesn’t say much, we are slightly taken aback by the meagre resolution considering the display was considered to be a central point in the creation of Amazon’s new phone. On the software side, it will without a doubt house the Firefox OS.

Further details will probably be dropped in the near future, but right now is a perfect time to ask you the readers the following question: do you think a 3D display (which actually isn’t a new feature) will be useful or rather a battery-draining gimmick?

LG G3 confirmed to feature 2K display [exclusive]

LG has confirmed that the upcoming LG G3 will feature a 2K display with 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution, as the image below confirms. We received the AnTuTu benchmark image claiming to be from the G3 and reached out to LG, who have officially confirmed that the G3 will have QHD resolution. This is great news for anyone feeling a little let down by other manufacturer flagship releases so far this year.

While there's no juicy information in the image leaked to us relating to the processor, it seems highly likely that the G3 will pack at least a Snapdragon 801 chipset, backed up by Adreno 330 GPU. This will put it ahead of the pack even further, even if it is released several months later than the Galaxy S5, Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8). While 2K resolution on what we expect to be a 5.5-inch screen will be a power-sucker, if anyone can handle battery and display with finesse it's got to be LG.

If the G3 does indeed arrive with a 5.5-inch display, the resolution will come in at 534 ppi. While we can't confirm that the bezels you see in the image come from the actual G3 or not, they do look similar to the LG G2, and there are no visible hardware buttons on the side of the pictured device. We're still hoping that LG will manage to squeeze that display into a chassis not much larger than the G2, but with the same bezels that might be a tall order. At this point we can assume that the G3 will house a quad-core Snapdragon 801 or 805, depending on its actual launch date and the availability of the Qualcomm chips, along with 3 GB of RAM to match its next-gen specs. We're expecting to see the G3 sooner rather than later, so keep your eyes peeled for an announcement before too long.

[Update: our friends at UberGizmo got their own benchmark shot from what looks to be the same source. Their AnTuTu screen comes an hour after ours and shows slightly different details. Their pic shows a pixel density of 640 ppi, which seems highly unlikely. The LG G3 would need to have a 4.6-inch screen for that number to be accurate.]

Samsung Gear Fit will support both vertical and horizontal display orientation after all

After Samsung unveiled the latest members of the Gear family at MWC, there seemed to be a large number of folks that genuinely were more interested in the looks and even feature set of the Gear Fit over the Gear 2 or the Gear 2 Neo.

Part of the appeal of the Fit is that it has a much more attractive design than many smartwatches and even quite a few existing fitness bands. The Fit also has a fairly impressive looking display for a smartband-type of device. On the downside, the display did have a major flaw when we first saw it at MWC.

The Fit was meant to be worn on the wrist, but at MWC we learned that the device only displayed content horizontally, making it difficult to read when actually wearing the device. This seemed like a pretty odd design move, and one that could prove bothersome to future Gear Fit owners. The good news is that Samsung has apparently issued an update to the Gear Fit that resolves the issue by adding a portrait orientation, as you can see in the picture above.

Considering the Gear Fit patch was just issued and the device is already about to hit retail stores, we imagine that the vertical viewing mode won’t be available right out of the box. Of course it probably won’t be too difficult to patch the device for those that decide to pick up the watch.

Galaxy S5 mini tech specs leak: Super AMOLED display, KitKat and more

When Samsung comes out with a flagship, the manufacturer always likes to launch a whole catalogue of variants, just like when saw with the launch of the S4, which spurred the S4 mini, S4 Active and S4 Zoom. Now, new leaked tech specs for a Galaxy S5 mini have surfaced and we are keen on seeing how much of the S5 this smaller, mid-range version will get. Read on for the details.

The Galaxy S5 mini, according to Sammobile’s own sources, is reported to come under the model number SM-G800, as well as sport a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 720 ppi, a dazzling improvements over the S4 mini’s 4.3-inch display with qHD resolution. Just because it’s smaller doesn't’ mean users need to settle for less, though this will certainly be reflected in the price. The S5 mini is said to come with an 8 MP back camera and a 2 MP front-facing camera. The device will run with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, but won’t be of the same caliber as the S5. Sammobile seems sure that it will be a 400 variant of the processor line just like the S4 mini, but I’m hoping for more. This all will be complemented by 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, supported by a 2,100 mAh battery, an improvement from the Galaxy S4 mini’s 1,900 mAh battery.

In terms of extras, there are allegations that it could be water and dust proof like its big sibling, but there has been not a peep about a possible heart rate monitor or fingerprint sensor, which I think won’t be the case, seeing as this will surely be a mid-range phone with (hopefully) a mid-range price. Though we have no info about when, where and what yet, the mini-me version of the S5 could be released in June.

''Hidden'' feature: How to display unread emails only on Gmail

You really can’t get away from using Gmail on your smartphone or tablet, but that being said, the Gmail for Android app still hasn’t received the optimization that we are used to on the web-based version. There is one option that doesn’t exist on the app, which you can use on your computer, that allows you to post only unread messages at the top of the page. Though this function has yet to arrive to Android, here is a workaround to make this happen anyways.

It’s ridiculously simple:

  • Tap the magnifying glass on the top left corner of your screen to launch the search function.
  • In the search field text box, enter is:unread in:inbox
  • Launch the search and there you go! All the unread messages come up first.

To be able to access this faster the next time, you simply need to open the search again and this time choose is:unread in:inbox from the search history. In worst case scenario (especially if you use the search function a lot), you just need to scroll through to find it.

We admit that this solution could be a bit cumbersome, but it suffices for the time being. But honestly, Google should get on top of adding this function to its app or at least creating an equivalent!

Moto 360 rumored to come with an OLED display and wireless charging

Motorola has been rather forthcoming with details about its new Moto 360 smartwatch. We already know about the device’s splash resistance, the orientation free design for southpaws, and Android 4.3 compatibility requirements. Now, an unspecified source as divulged a few more details about the device.

Speaking with G for Gamers, an unnamed leaker, who supposedly has a “flawless track record when it comes down to Motorola”, said that the Moto 360 will come with an OLED display, Sapphire Glass to protect the display from damage, as well as magnetic induction wireless charging.

We hadn’t heard anything about the 360’s display up until this point, but considering that Motorola highlighted battery life as key concern, an OLED displays makes a lot of sense. The display can dim and turn off individual pixels which helps save on energy consumption, compared with LCD where the backlight is always on. The choice of a Sapphire Glass protective layer is an interesting one, as other smartwatch developers have so far opted for the same Gorilla Glass screens used to protect their smartphone displays. However, Sapphire is a material often used in premium watch products, another reason why the Moto 360 might stand out above the rest.

Magnetic induction charging isn’t exactly a shocker either, Motorola already has some smartphone experience with the Qi induction charging standard. We’d already speculated that the Moto 360 would use some form of wireless charging due to the absence of a USB port, after all, what else could it possibly be?

I can’t help by wonder what impact all these components will have on the Moto 360’s price tag, as there’s a lot of high-end tech going into the device. If it turns out that the Moto 360 is priced right at the top of the market, would you be prepared to a pay a little more for a really high-end smartwatch?

Report: Rumored HTC Nexus tablet may feature 8.9-inch display

Back in February, a report surfaced out of Taiwan that claimed HTC had won a bid to build a new high-end Nexus tablet. Since then, we’ve heard very little else about this rumor, until today.

According to the research firm IHS Technology, Google and HTC are teaming up to create an 8.9-inch “high-performance” Nexus device. IHS’ Rhoda Alexander indicates volume production “is expected to start in July or August. The expectation is [that] this will be a lower volume product, carrying a premium price tag to support the specifications.” Alexander says she is unsure of the pricing that Google is targeting, but wouldn’t be surprised if it arrives with a tag higher than $299.

In other words, the HTC Nexus 8.9 would be a high-end alternative that co-exists with the Nexus 7, and perhaps even the Nexus 10. While the latter two tablets are geared more towards everyday consumers, the Nexus 8.9 would be a premium device that climbs further upmarket — sort of like what Samsung is trying to accomplish with the Galaxy Pro series.

So would such a move actually make sense? Maybe. While some folks are perfectly happy with the plastic (yet still high quality) builds of devices like the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, an aluminum body tablet with boomsound speakers certainly sounds like a nice alternative for those looking for something a bit more ‘premium’ looking.

On the other hand, IHS doesn’t specify where it is getting this information from, and might simply be building on existing rumors we’ve heard from publications like Focus Taiwan. Bottom-line, we’d take the whole rumor with a grain of salt for now.
