QuickClick Customizes Volume Button Actions, No Root Required

Android: With touch screen smartphones, volume buttons are among the few physical keys you can press. QuickClick makes it easy to put them to use for more than volume control.

For example, say you want to take a photo with your camera quickly. You can set it so that if you hit the Volume Up button thrice, it'll automatically take a photo (with a preset choice to use autofocus or not) and save it to a predetermined location.

QuickClick offers flashlight, photo, video, dictaphone, call shortcut, message shortcut, sound, configuration, app shortcut, and the ability to set a Tasker action for more automation. Each of these options has more choices, after which you need to select a sequence of clicking the volume buttons, such as Up, Up, Down, Down. And that's it. You can review or delete any of the actions at any time. And yes, it can be activated even if your screen is locked.

Show or Hide the Power Button in Windows 8.1 Update 1

Now you've updated your Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Update you'll notice a couple of differences between the two. One that annoyed me at first was that the Power button appeared on my laptop but not on my Surface RT. To me it would be more use on a tablet than a laptop where I can just close the lid. Here's a fix, and this being Windows it involves the registry so stop here if you don't go there.

First start the registry editor by typing regedit into the search box on the start screen.

Then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell

Right click on ImmersiveShell and create a new key called Launcher

Now right click in the right pane and select DWORD (32-bit) Value. Call it Launcher_ShowPowerButtonOnStartScreen

Set to zero and the power button won't show; set to one and you got it!

You'll have to restart your tablet after making the change.

Chrome Beta update brings undo button for closed tabs, and ‘some’ other stuff

Google’s Chrome Beta on Android has a few new tricks up its sleeve. Admittedly, we’ve already seen these features on the desktop browser, but now possible on Android will be the ability to reopen a closed tab, fullscreen HTML5 video playback, support for some multi-window supporting devices and the ability to send some video to your Chromecast.

We are always excited to see new features injected into Google’s Chrome Beta browser. Not only are new features exciting for the bleeding edge users that enjoy the beta channel, but, true to the ‘beta’ moniker, they serve as a strong indicator of possible things to come for the normal Chrome browser.

The ability to reopen your last closed tab operates as a small popup with an Undo button, visually very similar to the ‘undo’ notification you may be familiar with in your Gmail on the desktop. You’ll see it at the bottom of your screen for a few seconds after closing a tab, making it best for recovery of accidental closes. This feature only works for the last tab closed, but there is a Recent tabs option in the main menu if you need to go back further.

Fullscreen HTML5 video playback supports subtitles and has on-screen controls, but Google says that the controls are not yet complete, so beware of that. Multi-window support is only available for some devices. There is no list of which multi-window capable devices Chrome Beta now supports, they simply say it works for some. We’ll have to keep our eye on this as it matures, it will be interesting to see which devices are actually supported and how the feature operates.

Similarly to the support of ‘some’ devices for multi-window support, Chromecast support will only work for some video types. With a notable absence, you will not be able to cast YouTube videos from the browser, but there is always the YouTube app for that. Sadly, in our quick tests of the most popular video services, we could not find any videos that would cast, but we’re still very excited to watch this evolve into a solid feature, just one step closer to our dream of being able to cast an entire Chrome tab from Android.

As is usually the case, Google offers no promises as to if or when these features may graduate to the mainstream Chrome browser that most of us have on our Android devices. For now, you’ll have to install or update your Chrome Beta from the Google Play Store if you want to take these new features a spin.

‘MarkAsRead for Gmail’ app brings a Read button to Gmail notifications

Right now, if you receive a Gmail notification, you have one of two options: you can either archive it or reply. Wish there were more choices than that? Thanks to a new app appropriately named “MarkAsRead for Gmail” you finally get the option to simply mark the message as read, without having to do anything else.

MarkAsRead works by intercepting Gmail notifications, it then dismisses them and sends a clone to our notification tray that adds a handy “Read” button in between the Archive and Reply options. Although this is a simple app, it’s still a welcome change that we wish Google would bring us directly.

You can grab the app for yourself from Google Play for $1.31. While this is a little hefty of a price to pay for an app that has just one function, remember that you’re not just buying the one feature, but your investing in the developer and the work they’ve put into it. And for what it’s worth, the developer already has more “MarkAsRead” ideas in store for us in the future, such as possibily bringing similar functionality to SMS messages.
