Samsung users can also back up data using Samsung KIES. If you backup data manually, you get more options what to choose from and it is very easy to move data across Android devices from different manufacturers, i.e moving Samsung Galaxy Note backup data to HTC One X.

If you already have a custom recovery (ClockworkMod, TWRP etc.) installed on your phone, we strongly recommend a backup using that as it creates a complete image of your existing phone set up.

A few more optional tips that you should remember:

2. Make sure your Android device is charged up to 80-85% battery level. This might help you: How to Check Battery Percentage. Why? Chainfire’s Galaxy S5 root method now works with US Cellular, T-Mobile and several other models

Even though the Samsung Galaxy S5 is just now touching down to retailers across the globe, the handset has actually had a root method in place for nearly a month thanks to the efforts of well-known developer Chainfire!

When we first reported on Chainfire’s root method, it only directly supported Galaxy S5 model SM-G900F. Fast-forwarding to today, Chainfire has now formally added a few other models to the support list: SM-900H (International Exynos), SM-G900M (Middle and South America), SM-G900R4 (US Cellular), SM-G900T (T-Mobile US), SM-G900T1 (Metro PCS) and SM-G900W8 (Canada).

So what’s involved here? Chainfire’s method is designed to be as beginner friendly as possible and utilizes the latest version of the CF-Auto-Root tool. Once downloaded, the tool can be flashed to your device using Samsung’s ODIN on your PC. The process works by temporarily modifying your device’s recovery, it then installs the SuperSU app and re-flashes your recovery back to stock form.

Analyst says Sprint and T-Mobile have to merge for both to live

A new report from analyst firm New Street Research says that T-Mobile and Sprint will have to merge lest one of them is forced to fold.

According to the report neither Sprint nor T-Mobile can last for too long, saying that both lack the revenue needed to cover fixed costs. The firm also doubts if either carrier can gain enough new revenue, saying both need to raise an additional $10 billion in the next 18 months to stay competitive. “Both companies aren’t independently viable at the same time,” the report says. “We show that there simply isn’t enough revenue in the industry for four carriers to cover their fixed costs unless there is a significant shift in market share.” Remaining competitive, according to the analyst firm, would include buying more spectrum for both carriers.

New Street Research also makes an argument that in other countries such as Greece, the Netherlands, and Austria, consumer prices dropped when the wireless market consolidated to fewer competing carriers. The argument seems to echo Sprint chairman Masayoshi Son’s comments that Sprint would start a “massive price war” if it was allowed to merge with T-Mobile.

The biggest obstacles to that merger, as New Street points out, and most of us know by now, are the FTC and FCC. Neither government agency wants to see the U.S. carrier market shrink to three carriers. And their arguments make sense. From its current position T-Mobile has been able to shake up the industry with its Un-carrier plans. There is a legitimate fear that a combined Sprint/T-Mobile wouldn’t make the moves the current T-Mobile is making.

Maybe if one carrier was on the verge of failing the government agencies would be more receptive to the idea of a merger, but by then it may be too late. New Street says that at that point the merged carrier wouldn’t be able to challenge the AT&T and Verizon duopoly.

The New Street report is fairly depressing in that it makes a fairly reasonable argument for a Sprint/T-Mobile merger. It’s hard to see that merger being great for us as users. Sure, there’s promises of a “massive price war,” and the examples from other countries hint that maybe it would be a good thing, but there’s always a risk that promises won’t be kept and that the U.S. will prove the exception to the rule.

For now we’ll just have to hope that at least one of them can pull in the revenue needed to live and compete against AT&T and Verizon. The question is, which one would you like to see survive if one of them has to fail?

Newest Galaxy S5 ad shows fun, fast, fresh

HTC One (M8) now avaliable in-stores through AT&T and Sprint, T-Mobile tomorrow

The HTC One M8 has been available since it launched on March 25th through Verizon both in-store and online, and online-only for Sprint and AT&T. Starting today, however, AT&T and Sprint are now offering the handset through their brick-and-mortar locations as well.

Sprint and AT&T both offer the M8 for $199.99 with two-year contract, though there are also other options like AT&T Next for those that don’t want to commit to a traditional contract. As for T-Mobile? Unfortunately, it seems that the uncarrier won’t start selling the device until tomorrow, but at least its not much longer of a wait.

Te HTC One M8 is a major update from its predecessor, bringing a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU and 2GB of RAM. Other specs include a 5-inch LCD3 display with a 1080p resolution, a Duo camera configuration, front-facing boomsound speakers, a 2600 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat with Sense 6.0.

T-Mobile announces Tablet Freedom: 1GB extra data and 4G LTE tablets for Wi-Fi prices

Yesterday T-Mobile announced its new $40 Simple Starter plan, kicking off a three-day series of uncarrier announcements. For round 2, today T-Mobile unveiled that it will be introducing a new initiative called “Tablet Freedom”. Simply put, Tablet Freedom is about bringing cellular connections to your tablet as cheap as possible.

T-Mobile plans to do this is a few ways: First, it is now offering all of its 4G LTE capable tablets for the same price as you’ll find their Wi-Fi counterparts. Second, any newly purchased tablet will get an additional 1GB free data each month, combined with the 200MB free data you already get for tablet devices. T-Mobile’s press release also includes a few other points related to trading in your existing Wi-Fi tablet, participating in the Jump program and their commitment to paying off your ETFs.

T-Mobile’s Tablet Freedom program will officially go into effect the same day as its Starter plan, April 12th. Now we’re just left wondering what tomorrow’s announcement will bring. What do you think of the new Tablet Freedom initiative? Anyone tempted to pick up a tablet via T-Mobile?

(NYSE: TMUS) has revealed the second in a series of rapid-fire initiatives designed to advance the Un-carrier consumer revolution on multiple fronts. The company today launched Operation Tablet Freedom, a program that lets you add a tablet to your postpaid voice plan for free. Beginning April 12th, customers can get nearly 1.2 GB of free 4G LTE data every month through 2014 on America’s fastest nationwide LTE network.

“With this announcement, T-Mobile’s launching a full-on assault against the restrictions and pain points that keep tablet owners from experiencing life beyond the Wi-Fi zone,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “The Un-carrier is all about solving pain points, and today we’re eliminating every reason to be stuck on an unconnected Wi-Fi-only tablet. There’s no longer any need to limit the use of your tablet because you’re intimidated by Big Blue, Bad Red or Bumbling Yellow.”

First, cellular-enabled 4G LTE tablets are more expensive than Wi-Fi-only models. Second, even if you’ve put down the extra money for that cellular-enabled tablet, committing to a long-term data plan for it can be pretty intimidating. And, finally, most people with tablets are stuck with their old Wi-Fi only model, and those who do have cellular models are often stuck in overpriced carrier contracts.

Today the vast majority of American tablet owners are stuck on Wi-Fi or stuck in carrier contracts. That’s about to change.

If you’re stuck on Wi-Fi, you can now come to T-Mobile and upgrade to a 4G LTE-enabled model for nothing down and pay no more than you’d pay for the cheaper Wi-Fi-only model, with any postpaid activation on a 1GB or more mobile internet plan with no annual service contract. For example, pay the Wi-Fi price of $499 instead of $630 for the 4G LTE-enabled 16GB iPad Air. Or pay the Wi-Fi price of $200 instead of $312 for the 4G LTE Samsung Tab 3. T-Mobile Gets More Uncarrier With $40 Simple Starter Plan

T-Mobile President and CEO John Legere wants basic phone plans to be uncomplicated and act as more than just a gateway to higher-priced options, according to a new blog post from the often outspoken figure announcing his company’s new Simple Starter pricing plan. The Simple Starter plan is just $40 per month, and includes unlimited talk and text plus 500 MB of monthly data usage.

Those details aren’t things you’d learn from Legere’s blog post announcing the news, nor would you glean that the plan is specifically designed to avoid automatically incurring high overage chargers for customers who go over that 500 MB limit. Instead, Legere mostly goes on a run about AT&T and its fairly obvious attempts to steal some of T-Mobile’s momentum by copying its recent pricing model changes, and even, Legere suggests, its trademark magenta color scheme.

For the curious, how the new plan handles overages is actually by alerting customers when they hit their limit and offering them day or week data passes, or prompting them to sign up for different monthly plans. Users won’t be charged anything automatically, however, unlike with the so-called “flexible” options of their competitors.

T-Mo is getting lots of due credit for its attempts to change some of the basic home truths in the mobile industry, and has two more announcements planned over the next two days that should offer some more in the way of shake-ups. And sure, big blue and the rest might just get copying again, but that’s a general win for consumers either way.

T-Mobile and AT&T fight over upcoming spectrum auction rules

In 2012, AT&T was desperately trying to convince the public and regulators that if they weren’t allowed to buy T-Mobile, they’d face an absolute spectrum catastrophe, would be unable to deploy next-generation wireless services, and would have to scale back network investment substantially. A year later, AT&T had a change of heart. After pulling off nearly forty spectrum deals in the previous 12 months, AT&T’s CFO John Stephens told investors that AT&T had enough spectrum to last the next five years. From CNET:

“We have a satisfactory spectrum position for the next five years,” Stephens said during a presentation at a Morgan Stanley investor conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. “At the same time, we continue to encourage the government to make more spectrum available. And the reason is that it takes a long time to get spectrum to market. It’s a constant process.”

Basically, AT&T has admitted that they fabricated their own “spectrum crisis” but still want more from the government. 

Now, T-Mobile is asking that next year’s auction of 600 MHz broadcast spectrum have ”set-asides,” or portions of the spectrum that would be specifically set aside for smaller or new entrants. T-Mobile’s basic argument is that AT&T and Verizon will run the table and buy all available spectrum. Back in April of 2013, the Department of Justice warned the FCC that they should potentially cap the amount of spectrum AT&T and Verizon can acquire moving forward to prevent the two companies from hoarding spectrum anti-competitively.

“Today, the two leading carriers have the vast majority of low-frequency spectrum, whereas the two other nationwide carriers have virtually none,” wrote the DOJ. “This results in the two smaller nationwide carriers having a somewhat diminished ability to compete, particularly in rural areas where the cost to build out coverage is higher with high-frequency spectrum.”

AT&T responded to the DOJ by claiming that it would be unlawful to stop them from hoarding the spectrum. Speaking of lawful, does AT&T really want to go down that path? AT&T has a long history of over-emphasizing capacity and spectrum constraints in order to get what they want from regulators and politicians. Capacity was the primary justification for the company’s decision to impose overage penalties on DSL users, despite no evidence that their networks experience any actual congestion.

Verizon is on record saying they have so much spectrum that neither refarming 3G spectrum or Wi-Fi offloading are priorities for them. Responding to concerns by the DOJ that maybe AT&T and Verizon’s spectrum buys moving forward should be capped so they can’t hoard spectrum anti-competitively, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo today promised they’d certainly never consider such a thing:

“These rules could cause an auction to fail,” warned Shammo on the call. Verizon shouldn’t be penalized by spectrum rules, he said, because the operator isn’t one to buy spectrum just to sit on it and keep competitors from using it, otherwise known as spectrum hoarding. “Verizon has never purchased spectrum to do that. We buy spectrum to use it,” Shammo declared.

So, basically they want us to trust them. While AT&T and Verizon certainly need spectrum and there is an argument to be made about there being an inefficient use of existing spectrum, the argument that there is a crisis helps both companies buy as much as their bank accounts allow all the while reducing the chances of an actual competitive market.

T-Mobile is now introducing an entry-level option for its post-paid customers, dubbed the Simple Starter plan. The new plan brings unlimited talking and texting, alongside 500MB of LTE data for just $40 a month.

Although 500MB might not be close to enough data for most of you out there, not everyone’s situation is the same. For example, I rarely use much more than this, due to the fact I work from home and most of the places I go to socially have easily accessible Wi-Fi. For those that can get by on this low amount of data, $40 is a pretty solid price for unlimited talk and text and easily beats out similar entry-plans from other major U.S. carriers.

On the downside, the wording of T-Mobile’s press release seems to suggest that, unlike other T-Mobile plans, you aren’t throttled to lower speed data once you run out of your 500MB — you’re simply cut off altogether. Of course, you can still add day passes or switch to another plan if you really need more than this.

The new Simple Starter plan will officially be available starting on April 12th. Sprint’s roaming alliance is another push to merge with T-Mobile

Sprint continues it’s public assault against AT&T and Verizon by now telling rural wireless companies to “fight back” against a “duopoly [that] is taking over our country, America.”

On Thursday, Sprint Chairman Masayoshi Son told members of the Competitive Carriers Association (CCA) on a roaming alliance that would effectively expand the cellular coverage of both Sprint and CCA’s 100-odd members across the United States. Effectively, Sprint would help pay for the smaller carriers’ rollout of LTE and provide them with LTE-capable devices they can sell to customers.

Even with this overture, it seems that Sprint is simply turning on the public relations charm in an attempt to convince regulators to allow the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile. The Federal Communications Commission though continues telling Sprint that they prefer four national wireless carriers, rather than three carriers.

The elimination a competitor simply means that we have less competition in the United States. With less competition, it’s likely that a combined T-Mobile and Sprint would start acting more like AT&T and Verizon, not less. Sprint already had a tendency to follow AT&T and Verizon’s lead on pricing and consumer friendly (or unfriendly) policies in recent years.

It should be noted that when AT&T and T-Mobile were trying to merge, Sprint had the following to say: “The wireless industry has sparked unprecedented levels of competition, innovation, job creation and investment for the American economy, all of which could be undone by this transaction.”

T-Mobile posts a little Galaxy S5 unboxing video, pre-order page now live (updated)

UPDATE: As expected, T-Mobile’s pre-order page is now live. You can grab the Galaxy S5 for $0 down and $27.50 a month. Those interested in buying it outright will pay $660.

Starting today, T-Mobile will be taking your pre-orders for the new Samsung Galaxy S5. Those that pre-order are expected to receive the actual phone in hand on April 11th. Ahead of this, a lucky T-Mobile employee has gone ahead and recorded a little Galaxy S5 unboxing video for all of us to enjoy now.

The official T-Mobile video, put together by their product guru Des Smith, provides a quick glance at the phone and packaging. The Galaxy S5 is a 5.1-inch device with an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB storage and Samsung’s new 16MP ISOCELL camera capable of recording 4K video. We took the phone for a quick spin at its official announcement back in February, check out all the specs and our impressions here.

Of interest in the video is the multiple references to the seal on the back cover of the device. This seal is key to the Galaxy S5′s IP67 dust and water resistance rating, which means it is effectively waterproof for short and shallow dunks. For me, the interesting part is the reminder to check your device’s back cover, as seen when it first boots into the Home screen.

Pre-ordering your T-Mobile Galaxy S5 from now until the end of the month will get you the device for $0 down, then pay it off in the next 24 months at $27.50 per month, for a total of $660. T-Mobile calls this a special introductory price, so expect a little price bump come April 1.

If you are not a fan of T-Mobile, but the Galaxy S5 is your must have device, head on over to AT&T or Sprint to pre-order for $200 with a 2 year contract, or U.S. Cellular for $200 after mail-in rebate. RadioShack will also give you special pre-order pricing, which means there really are no shortages of places to make sure you are one of the first to get the Galaxy S5 in hand next month.

Backup and Other Important Tips

Always backup your important data that you might need after you install a new custom ROM, an official software update or anything else. Make a backup for just in case, you never know when anything might go wrong. See below for some tips on how to backup data:

Samsung users can also back up data using Samsung KIES. If you backup data manually, you get more options what to choose from and it is very easy to move data across Android devices from different manufacturers, i.e moving Samsung T-Mobile Galaxy S3 backup data to HTC One X.

If you already have a custom recovery (ClockworkMod, TWRP etc.) installed on your phone, we strongly recommend a backup using that as it creates a complete image of your existing phone set up.

A few more optional tips that you should remember:

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5 pre-orders begin March 24

T-Mobile will start taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S5 next week, on March 24, and it won’t make you put any money down on the phone to get it.

Pre-orders of the new Samsung flagship phone will be available in-store and online on March 24. T-Mobile won’t ask you to put any money down on the smartphone, but you will have to pay 24 monthly installments of $27.50 for the phone. The total cost of the phone comes out to $660. Of course, you can also choose to just pay the $660 outright to avoid the monthly installments on the phone.

Unfortunately, there is no release date given for the Galaxy S5 in the press release. Samsung said the phone will ship sometime in early April worldwide, so those who pre-order hopefully won’t have to wait too long.

To celebrate the start of pre-orders for the Galaxy S5 T-Mobile is offering a discount on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. From now until March 31 T-Mobile will knock $120 off the price of the Android tablet, bringing it down to $192. The tablet comes with 200MB of free data every 30 days, provided you have another registered T-Mobile device in use.

How T-Mobile and John Legere are shaking things up

Carriers in the U.S. have an iron grip on the mobile phone industry. As a result, Americans pay more on average for cell service, particularly wireless data, than the rest of the world does. For years now, the standard setup has locked consumers into a two-year contract with limited possibility of parole. In return for a cheap or free smartphone upfront, consumers sign on to expensive contracts that bring in big profits for carriers and the only way out is to pay a hefty early termination fee (ETF).

Over the last year or so one company has been shaking things up and threatening the status quo with a lot of fancy new ideas. T-Mobile, led by maverick John Legere, has introduced a new way of doing things without the standard two-year contract lock in. Determined to climb from a distant 4th place in the market and get competitive again, the self-branded “Uncarrier” has been improving its network, introducing transparent pricing that’s fairer, and throwing in incentives like free international roaming.

The competition has been forced to respond to T-Mobile’s many broadsides, including its offer to pay up to $650 with its ETF buyout plan, designed to get families to ditch their current carriers, trade in their handsets, and sign up with T-Mobile. There’s no doubt the other big three are running scared and we’re finally seeing some genuine competition.

How did this happen?

Turn the ship around!

Cast your mind back two years and T-Mobile was fast becoming irrelevant, trailing behind AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. It didn’t have the iPhone, it didn’t have the best choice of Android smartphones, and it didn’t have a 4G LTE network. There was a failed attempt to sell the company to AT&T in 2011. After that didn’t come off, parent company Deutsche Telekom decided to invest the cash needed to build an LTE network and reboot the brand. It soon became clear that things would not be improving overnight. The second quarter results for 2012 showed customer losses of 205,000, and, around the same time, a JD Power study put T-Mobile last in terms of customer care performance.

Enter John Legere

In September 2012, T-Mobile appointed Legere as the new CEO and he set about changing its fortunes. No stranger to the telecommunications industry, Legere was with AT&T for nearly 20 years, before working at Dell, and then serving as the CEO of Global Crossing for a decade. Upon joining T-Mobile he wasted no time in formulating a plan to shake up the industry, and he had no qualms about criticizing the competition in the process.

In January 2013, Legere stole the headlines at CES when he took to the stage in a t-shirt and baseball cap to unveil what T-Mobile’s new “Uncarrier” branding was all about. A contract-free unlimited plan including unlimited data, texts, and calls for $70 per month. Customers could pay full price for a new smartphone or bring their existing device with them.

He was shockingly open and honest, joking on stage with reporters. He even called AT&T’s network “crap” and vowed to deliver a better deal for customers. He also explained that the new philosophy was all about tackling pain points that are common across all customers, namely lack of transparency in the billing structure, overage charges, and a lack of flexibility with contracts that tie people down.

Keeping it simple

In March, Legere and T-Mobile expanded the vision further. New Simple Choice plans would deliver unlimited texts and calls with 500MB of data for $50 per month, 2.5GB of data for $60 per month, and unlimited data for $70 per month. Customers would also have the option of starting a separate device plan to buy a new smartphone for a low upfront cost and then pay it off in 24 monthly installments. They could leave at any time, but they’d still have to pay the remaining balance on the device. Alternatively they could buy a new full price phone or bring their existing device with them.

Things got a little more complicated in July when the company announced its JUMP program at an extra $10 per month, which offers the chance to upgrade twice a year, as long as you’ve been on the plan for at least six months. That means you can hand back your existing device and buy a new one more often, but you’ll pay a premium for the privilege.

In October, T-Mobile kept the momentum rolling with free data for life for tablets. Customers would get 200MB of free data every month with any tablet for as long as they own and use the device on T-Mobile’s network.

Winning new customers

For the full year of 2012 T-Mobile claimed net customer additions of 203,000. Signs that the new strategy is working were there for all to see in T-Mobile’s 2013 results, total net customer additions of 4.4 million for the year.

Expectations were heightened for CES this year as the outspoken Legere took to the stage and offered an ETF buyout plan aimed at families. He explained, “We’re giving families a ‘Get Out of Jail Free Card. Carriers have counted on staggered contract end dates and hefty early termination fees to keep people bound to them forever. But now families can switch to T-Mobile without paying a single red cent to leave them behind.”

In an effort to preempt the plan AT&T offered T-Mobile customers up to $450 per line to switch, but T-Mobile’s announcement trumped that by offering up to $650. Customers would get $300 for trading in their existing AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint handset and sign up for a T-Mobile plan, followed by another $350 to pay off the early termination fees.

Expanding the network

In terms of coverage and speed T-Mobile has been playing catch up. It is still rolling out 4G LTE and recently announced plans to upgrade its 2G network to 4G LTE to cover 250 million US customers by the end of the year. Verizon’s current claims about having the best coverage don’t take T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network into account, which has got Legere speaking out again, “Verizon’s ink blots massively understate our coverage and don’t begin to represent the actual customer experience on T-Mobile’s network.”

T-Mobile has expanded quickly and because it has fewer customers right now there’s more bandwidth available to deliver faster speeds. If you live in a big city, then T-Mobile’s coverage is likely to be comparable to or better than the competition, but that’s probably not the case elsewhere.

On T-Mobile’s place in the industry: “If you thought we went away, if you thought T-Mobile wasn’t going to be a significant player in this industry, think again.”

What’s next?

It’s not clear if Deutsche Telekom is still looking to sell T-Mobile. Now that its fortunes are turning around, it could command a tempting chunk of change, and there have been persistent rumors that Sprint might be interested in buying, or a merger may be on the cards. Whether the US DOJ Antitrust Division would allow it is another matter — it did block the AT&T acquisition a few years ago.

Whatever happens next, one thing is for certain, T-Mobile is on the up and the other three major carriers are struggling to come up with an answer. Even if you don’t want to make the switch to T-Mobile you could still benefit from the moves it’s making as Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon try to counter with new deals of their own.
