Most Popular Desktop Microphone: Blue Yeti/Yeti Pro

S

A great microphone can make all the difference between being heard or being fuzzy and muted when you're video chatting with friends, podcasting, or recording audio at your computer. Last week we asked you for your favorites, then looked at the five best desktop microphones. Now we're back to highlight our winner.

Most Popular Desktop Microphone: Blue Yeti/Yeti ProS

The Blue Yeti and Yeti Pro took the top spot in the poll with over 35% of the votes cast. Simple plug-and-play setup, exceptional audio quality, multiple pickup pattern options, and a solid price point all combined to make it your favorite desktop microphone pick.

Right behind it with 26% of the overall vote was the Audio-Technica AT2020, another exceptional USB cardioid condenser microphone that's durable and comes in both USB and XLR models, depending on your needs. In third place, the Blue Snowball—perhaps the first semi-pro USB desktop microphone, and one that's legendary with podcasters and at-home voiceover recordists, picked up over 17% of the overall vote. The legendary Shure SM-58 brought in fourth place with a respectable 15% of the vote, and the super-portable and good looking Samson Meteor snagged over 6% of the vote to round out the five.

Honestly, you really can't go wrong with any of these, and some may match your needs better than others. For more on each of these, and the honorable mentions not listed here, make sure to head back to the full Hive Five feature to read more.

Dropbox’s popular iOS email client ‘Mailbox’ finally comes to Android

mailbox

Roughly a year ago, Dropbox acquired popular iOS email client Mailbox for $100 million. Now after all this time, Android users can finally get their hands on the Mailbox app as well!

Just like the iOS version, Mailbox’s biggest features are its unified inbox that lets all your mail come into one place, as well as its swiping functions that allow you to snooze emails until later, or you can even archive and delete messages depending on whether you short or long swipe to the right. One change from the iOS version is a brand new feature called Auto Swipe, which basically learns your swiping actions in order to bring automation to certain tasks like archiving.

For those looking for “one email client to rule them all”, it’s worth noting that Dropbox is introducing a version of Mailbox for desktop computers as well. This handy for those who enjoy the Mailbox app and are looking for a uniform experience both on mobile and desktop.

Get it on Google Play

Mailbox is free to use, though at the moment it only supports iCloud and Gmail accounts. Dropbox promises wider email platform support is coming down the pipe line, though.

Anyone try out Mailbox for Android yet? If so, what do you think so far, how does it compare to other popular Android clients like the official Gmail app?

Popular game ‘The Walking Dead’ finally comes to Google Play

the-walking-dead-google-play

Last year we learned that the popular TellTale game The Walking Dead was on its way to the Android-based Ouya, marking the first time the game had ever graced an Android device. At the time we wondered whether or not the game would eventually make its way to other Android devices as well. Today we get our answer, as the Walking Dead: Season One has finally arrived to Google Play.

Although many of you have probably already played this on another platform like the PC or a game console, for the uninitiated, the Walking Dead is a popular zombie apocalypse comic and television series, which also spun off a very successful episodic video game series.

The game focuses primarily on different characters than from the television show and is full of tough decisions that will follow you throughout the episodes. The first episode of the game is yours for absolutely free, though the remaining 4 episodes and the extra 400 Days DLC are offered via an in-app purchase.

So is this one worth picking up? The answer to that depends. If you’ve already purchased and beat all five episodes of the Walking Dead, it’s probably not worth repurchasing. For those that have never played it before and at are all into survival games with solid storylines? We absolutely recommend this game.

To check out the Walking Dead for yourself you’ll want to head on over to Google Play.

Most Popular Home Screen Replacement: Google Now Launcher

S

Launchers are great, but there are new apps that transform your device, let you customize it yourself with themes, or float useful information to you when you need to see it. Last week we asked you for your faves , then looked at the five best home screen replacements for Android . Now we're back to highlight our winner.

Most Popular Home Screen Replacement: Google Now LauncherS

The Google Now Launcher may not be as transformative as the other contenders, and it's not a complete home screen replacement, but it was definitely the most popular, and it does a great job of floating useful information when you need it—not to mention being a gateway to even more. It picked up the top spot with over 34% of the vote.

EverythingMe snagged second place with 20% of the votes cast for its complete home screen overhaul, app suggestions, and location-aware reminders and notifications. Themer, a customization and personalization suite, squeaked into third place with over 18% of the votes cast, thanks to its wide variety of themes and design options that make your phone really unique. Aviate, the quintessential context-aware home screen replacement and probably the most functional (although not the most customizable) of the five, came in fourth place with 18% of the vote. Bringing up the rear in fifth place was Cover, the context-aware lockscreen replacement (that actually works well with the other homescreen replacements if you choose to double up) with over 9% of the vote.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!
