hbo app On Amazon Fire TV Later This Year

Amazon just announced a multi-year agreement with HBO to offer that cable network’s back-catalog of shows on Amazon Instant Video, free for Prime subscribers. That’s not all, though; HBO GO, which offers not only archived content but also current programming to HBO subscribers, will arrive on Amazon Fire TV by year’s end, the companies announced.
HBO GO was the one glaring omission in terms of third-party app support for the Fire TV when it was announced last month. The streaming service offers those who already subscribe to HBO via their cable or satellite provider access to the network’s extensive archive of TV series’, as well as original films, sports, miniseries and documentary programming. The current catalog is over 1,700 titles strong, which means Fire TV gains a lot of additional appeal, or at least more feature parity with some of its competitors, including Apple TV and Roku.
The deal with Amazon to offer HBO titles on the Instant video streaming library has about a three-year lag time, too, so the HBO GO offering offers those hungry for more current content a way to stay up to date. Amazon also seems to be planning to integrate HBO GO into Fire TV’s unified voice search, so anything you have access to within will appear alongside Instant titles and stuff from other content providers on the platform. No firm date on its release has been announced yet, beyond the “target” of year’s end.

TechCrunch Is Here In Hanoi With A Meetup Later Tonight

Just a quick and spur-of-the-moment note, I’m in Hanoi this week and would love to meet founders and engineers from the community.

Project Tango will power NASA’s SPHERES robotic platform, will launch into space later this summer

While Project Ara is more immediately aimed at providing a commercial solution for improving the lives of smartphone users around the globe, the equally ambitious Project Tango is currently geared towards developers and organizations looking to find unique ways to make use a device that is essentially aware of its own surroundings.

Project Tango utilizes a pair of cameras and an infrared projector to measure depth and observe movement, and then takes this information and creates a 3D map of the space around it. Aside from this, the specs inside the Tango ‘phone’ aren’t much different from your typical handset, such as its quad-core SoC and 2GB of RAM.

Google and NASA are working to integrate Tango with NASA’s own robotic platform, SPHERES.

Project Tango has a lot of potential, and Google has already been releasing the device into the hands of various partners over the last couple months. One of these partners is NASA, and today Google revealed a bit about what NASA intends to do with Project Tango.

Project Tango and its role in SPHERES

Since the summer of 2013, Google ATAP’s Tango team has been working closely with a NASA team at the Ames Research Center. The focus of their relationship has been on working to integrate Tango with NASA’s own robotic platform, called SPHERES.

The goal of the SPHERES platform is basically to create autonomous robotic assistants that can eventually handle the more menial tasks for those aboard the ISS space station. Where does Tango play into all this? Basically the smartphone plugs into the SPHERES robotic prototype, providing it with the “eyes” needed to properly navigate around the space station.

When might SPHERES and Tango actually make their way beyond testing and into space? Sooner then you’d think. If all goes well, Project Tango and SPHERES should be launched into orbit later this summer. This is certainly a unique use of the technology behind Project Tango and makes it clear that Tango’s long-term effects could go way beyond simply giving us a cool 3D sensing handset to play around with.

Blue Mail Snoozes Emails for Later, Turns Them Into a Task List

Android: If you like to look at your email as if it were a to-do list, then get Blue Mail. It lets you snooze mails for later so they act as reminders, and you can even turn your inbox into a task list and mark each message as "done".

It's generally a good idea to separate your email from your to-do list, but that's not for everyone. The recently launched Mailbox for Android does a good job of turning your email into a productivity zone, but is limited: you need a Dropbox account, you can't save attachments to your local memory, and it works only with Gmail and iCloud.

Blue Mail supports a vast range of email providers, including Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, iCloud, AOL and other POP3 accounts. It's got threaded conversations and a profile picture, making it look similar to the Gmail app for Android.

Swipe left on any message and you'll get two options: Done and Delete. The latter is self-explanatory, while the former puts a checkmark on the mail, so you know that you have addressed whatever needs to be addressed. If you get a lot of work mail, this can be an invaluable addition.

Swipe right on any message and you get two shortcuts to set a reminder for that mail. Both are named "Later" so it gets confusing at first, but the first is a shortcut to snooze for 3 hours while the other lets you choose when you want to get the reminder. The shortcut's duration can be changed in the app's Settings.

Settings also let you choose whether you want your default filter to be all the mails in your inbox, or only those which haven't been set to "Later" or marked as "Done". To check all of these task-listed emails, there's a separate Tasks view you can turn to.

Blue Mail is a simple and efficient app that gets things done in your inbox, so give it a whirl.
