Apple luring game developers into offering iOS timed exclusives, in exchange for more prominent advertising

Back in September of last year, EA ran into a bit of controversy over Plants vs Zombies 2, when an exec reportedly admitted that Apple had paid the company a ton of money to delay the Android launch. Later it was reported that the unnamed executive had really said something to this effect, but it had been meant as a joke.

Now according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, we learn that while money might not have changed hands, that doesn’t mean an exclusivity deal wasn’t reached. WSJ’s sources that are “familiar with the situation” claim Apple has been working hard to woo game developers into releasing titles to iOS ahead of Android.

What’s the incentive for developers, if not cash? In the case of games like Plants vs Zombies 2, the game was featured prominently in the app store in exchange for a delayed Android release, giving it more views in the AppStore and potentially more downloads. Another example of a game that reached a similar marketing/advertising agreement was ZeptoLab’s Cut the Rope 2 — which arrive to iOS in December but didn’t hit Android until March.

Why exclusivity matters for Apple

In the video game market, both full and timed exclusives are rather common. For developers, there are usually monetary or promotional/marketing advantages, and for the console maker exclusives can make their system seem more desirable when compared to the competition.

For Apple, having key exclusives not only allows the company to attract gamers interested in getting into the action ‘right away’, it also helps Apple continue to feed the false perception that Android is harder to developer for due to fragmentation and other “Android problems”. After all, a gamer will see apps hitting iOS months ahead of Android, and may assume there must be ‘technical reasons’ for such delays.

As Google Android continues to increase its marketshare (representing 80% of smarphones shipped in 2013), Apple is losing the war. This is why it is important to keep alive the idea that Android is less secure, more fragmented and has a weaker library of apps, as it gives Apple an edge when it comes to mindshare.

Now to be fair, there was a time when all of these above points were completely valid.

In terms of app development, Android has traditionally been harder to develop for, in large part due to the shear amount of screen sizes, resolutions, processors and Android versions that developers had to account for. As time has gone by, however, Android’s development tools have improved making this less of an issue than it once was.

Google strikes back

Before you start shaking that stick at Apple in anger, it’s important to mention that WSJ reports Google is also working to form exclusive arrangements with app developers. WSJ also mentions that Amazon has been working to bring timed exclusives and even full exclusives to its AppStore as well, in an attempt to lure consumers into buying Kindle-branded tablets and simply installing the App Store on their existing Android devices.

Of course, game and app exclusives probably don’t have quite as big of an impact on what devices consumers buy as it does in the world of home and portable gaming consoles. Still, this could change in time, especially as mobile games become increasingly more advanced.

Fresh Resources for Designers and Developers – April 2014

Alright, we’ve gone through the first quarter of 2014, let’s head on to the fourth month of the year. This round, April 2014, we have a framework for building WordPress theme, and one for building mobile app. We will take a look at a new code editor from Github here briefly, and a very cool font icon.

As usual, if nothing here strikes your fancy, feel free to look through earlier compilations of fresh resources for designers and developers we’ve published in the past year or so.

Runway Framework

Runway Framework is beyond just a framework that you can use as a starting point to develop a WordPress theme. With it, you can set plugin dependencies that are required for your theme, manage child themes, and create an Option/Setting page in drag-n-drop fashion.

StackIcons

This font-icon really caught my attention. We typically can only assign a single color to a font-icon, but StackIcons is sophisticated in the sense that each part within the icon is adjustable. Moreover, the icons also come in multiple shapes; circle, square, rounded, and icon-only. A really great collection of font icons that is worth bookmarking. Save it, in case you need it later.

TagTree

TagTree provides a collection of screencasts that could help take your JavaScript skills to the next level. To name a few, you can now learn to build an app using AngularJS and Yeoman, create data visualization with D3.js, and draw vector graphics with Paper.js. And there are likely more screencasts to come in the future.

Atom

Atom is a new code editor from Github. The idea behind it is to make a “fully customizable, hackable, and deeply extensible” code editor. Similar to Sublime Text, Atom can also be powered with packages. At the time of writing, Atom is still in Beta. It will be free (while in Beta) but only available by invitation. If you are interested you can request an invitation at Atom.io.

SassConf

Couldn’t attend web development conference? No worries, you can watch the screencast. SassConf, for instance, uploaded their recorded keynotes on a Vimeo channel. There are currently 15 videos that you can watch, covering all about Sass, tips, and tricks on building a better website.

Ratchet

Ratchet is the new mobile app framework on the block that allows you to build an app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Since it is built by the same team behind Bootstrap, Ratchet also inherited similar code conventions. Ratchet also comes with a number of reusable components to build the app interface such as Title bar, Buttons, Forms, and Sliders.

WP Job Manager

Build a job board on your website? If it is built of WordPress you can install WP Job Manager. WP Job Manager adds a new menu on the Dashboard. You can add a new job listing with some of its required detail like job location, job expired data, and employer/company name as well as company logo.

Crowe Wireframe

Crowe Wireframe is a collection of common design patterns such as image, text block, navigation, and buttons that you can use for rapid prototyping. But unlike a conventional prototype that only visualize its components with a boring outline and boxes which makes it hard to differentiate an icon from a logo, Crowe Wireframe is more visual-rich and detailed.

Cerberus

Today, more and more people are checking emails through their mobile devices. So, it is important to make sure that your email displays nicely, and is readable in that situation. Cerberus is a good starting point to build your email. It is light, responsive, and compatible in most email clients including Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo.

Typebase

Typebase.css is a collection of styles to reset web typography, very much like Normalize.css. It is available in CSS, LESS and Sass format, so that you can integrate it in your project easily regardless of what framework you are using.

Project Ara gets a progress update video ahead of developers conference

Just in case your excitement level for Project Ara was dwindling, the Phonebloks crew has put up a video teaser – a little behind the scenes action of Project Ara and the folks that are making it possible.

The video comes at us less than two weeks ahead of the first Project Ara developers conference on April 15-16, and within days of the expected release of the Ara Module Developer’s Kit. We’d say that is good timing, indeed. Shot and pieced together by Dave Hakkens of Phonebloks, the video is a bit of a tour of what the Project Ara team has going on, and it is looking pretty good.

Let me just say one thing before you start the video – electro-permanent magnets are cool!

Instead of turning to screws, plastic clips or a full back cover, the engineers have a Project Ara prototype running that uses electro-permanent magnets to secure the individual modules in place on the main phone board. These magnets are made of various materials that operate as an electro-magnet, however, are able to hold a magnetic state without the need for constant electricity, just set it and forget it and your pieces stay attached.

The module connection technique allows the device to aesthetically embrace the modular design without needing to hide it all behind a cover. Allowing for ultimate customization, users can order modules in different colors, textures and designs. An Ara Configurator app will let you play with various designs and modules, and presumably allow you to order pieces, or an entire phone.

Project Ara Sizes

Finally, the video reveals what appears to be three distinct sizes of Ara devices, Mini and Medium appear to be in progress now, with Large coming in a future release. No indication is given what the actual sizes are, but Mini will provide a 2×5 module grid, Medium gets you up to 3×6 modules and Large will come in with a grid of 4×7 modules.

Developers asking for Omate smartwatch source code, MediaTek stalling?

One of the key strengths of the Linux kernel is that it is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL), an open source license which gives everyone the right to use and even modify the Linux kernel, with the condition that the source code is made available for any publicly released versions.

Since Android uses the Linux kernel, the GPL license also applies to the versions of Android which are released by OEMs and processor manufacturers. When an OEM or chip maker releases a version of Android which supports their products, they should, according to the GPL, also freely release the source code.

Unfortunately, from time to time, there are companies which don’t release the source code. They seem to have a mentality that their modifications to the source code are proprietary, which they aren’t, and although the Android source code was supplied to them for free, they don’t think they are obliged to give anything back, which actually they are. The GPL basically works on the basis that freely we have received and freely we should give. Without a version of Android for their processor, it is unlikely that they would sell very many units.

MediaTek withholds code for Omate smartwatch

There a millions of devices in the world today which run Linux (with or without Android) and, for the most part, the designers of these products have also released the relevant source code. One new device which is getting a lot of attention is the upcoming Omate TrueSmart, a smart watch which raised over $1 million in funding from Kickstarter.

The device uses a dual-core MediaTek MT6572 and this is where the trouble starts. A campaign has started on the Internet asking MediaTek to release the source code for the Linux kernel which is used on the Omate.

It appears that Omate doesn’t have an official partner level agreement with MediaTek, and so it is only receiving pre-compiled binaries for the MT6572. Normally, a chip maker would publish the source code, and any OEM needing access to it would just download the source archive from the Internet.

The campaign asking MediaTek to release the source code also alleges that MediaTek is trying to re-license GPL code and is asking its partners to pay a fee and sign an agreement before it will release the source code. An attempt from MediaTek to to sublicense GPL code would automatically terminate its right to use the Linux kernel.

Since MediaTek is a Taiwanese company, it’s probably quite hard for any legal action originating in the West to force the chip maker to publish the source code. But maybe the company will capitulate under consumer pressure?
