AT&T offering like-new Galaxy S4 for just $179, off-contract!

After first offering up the certified like-new Note 3 for sale off-contract for just $249, AT&T is now featuring a similar deal for those interested in picking up the Samsung Galaxy S4 on the cheap.

According to AT&T’s website, the handset is yours for just $179 while supplies last in red or white, with no annual commitment required. Even though the GS4 is no longer Samsung’s newest Galaxy S member, this is still a hell of a deal. Come to think of it, the deal seems too good to be true, so what’s the catch?

Looking at AT&T’s terms, the only catch is that you will need to sign up for a new-line before buying the handset — though you aren’t obligated to stay with the plan long-term since this is not an on-contract offer. For those that simply want the handset cheap, it is reportedly possible to ‘cancel’ the plan before you are charged, once your phone ships. That said, AT&T won’t officially unlock the device until you’ve had it on their network for at least a few months, though there are other ‘unofficial’ ways around this problem.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has been stuck with Android 4.3 for quite some time now, but AT&T customers will be seeing the update to Android 4.4 KitKat started today. Though the KitKat problem hasn’t been void of problems, I’m sure users will be pleased with the many perks that comes along with it.

Android 4.4. KitKat brings quite a few nice features that will soon grace the AT&T Galaxy S4 Active, Samsung’s rigorous version of the Galaxy S4. Some of these features are of course a great new and much cleaner user interface, wireless printing and more. This is a good indication that other carriers will soon push the KitKat update to their Galaxy S4 Actives.

Verizon, AT&T and Sprint disable Galaxy S5's download booster

There were two features of the Galaxy S5 that impressed me at its launch: the Ultra Power Saving Mode and the Download Booster, which allows you to download 1 GB of data in 30 seconds by combining both Wi-Fi and 3G/LTE data to handle the download. Sadly though, if you're planning on picking up a Galaxy S5 on either the Verizon, AT&T or Sprint networks, you'll have to live without the download booster feature.

Android Police originally noticed that demo models of the AT&T variant did not have the feature enabled. FierceWirelessTech then independently confirmed with both Verizon and Sprint that they will not be offering the feature either, leaving T-Mobile as the only major nationwide carrier to include the download booster in its Galaxy S5.

It's not exactly new that some carriers disable features available on international or other variants of a device, sometime due to local laws or other restrictions, but in this case it's a bit of a bummer for anyone wanting to use the feature to quickly and easily transfer data as quickly as possible. Considering most people don't exactly seem to be thrilled by the finger scanner or heart rate monitor on the S5, losing a valuable feature like the download booster is not a great way to market the device on sale day.

HTC One (M8) now avaliable in-stores through AT&T and Sprint, T-Mobile tomorrow

The HTC One M8 has been available since it launched on March 25th through Verizon both in-store and online, and online-only for Sprint and AT&T. Starting today, however, AT&T and Sprint are now offering the handset through their brick-and-mortar locations as well.

Sprint and AT&T both offer the M8 for $199.99 with two-year contract, though there are also other options like AT&T Next for those that don’t want to commit to a traditional contract. As for T-Mobile? Unfortunately, it seems that the uncarrier won’t start selling the device until tomorrow, but at least its not much longer of a wait.

Te HTC One M8 is a major update from its predecessor, bringing a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU and 2GB of RAM. Other specs include a 5-inch LCD3 display with a 1080p resolution, a Duo camera configuration, front-facing boomsound speakers, a 2600 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat with Sense 6.0.

AT&T and Verizon are actively trying to kill off cities landlines

Over the last few years, AT&T and Verizon have been going state to state trying to get any and all consumer protections laws stripped on DSL and landlines in preparation of hanging up on users they don’t want to upgrade. With Verizon and AT&T having killed off regulatory oversight in many states, we should not expect anything to be done about it, despite both companies being given billions in subsidies over the years to get these very same users online.

Verizon and AT&T pitch this type of move as some sort of transition into the future in which consumers will get improved networks. AT&T and Verizon have only one goal in this so-called transition and that is to kick off all DSL and POTS users and force them onto another fixed-line choice of cable broadband or heavily capped wireless.

This move ends up allowing AT&T and Verizon to save billions all the while skirting consumer protection laws put in place for this type of situation. Consumers are therefore stuck between paying more for cable broadband (if you can get it), or signing up for expensive wireless with low data caps (if you can get it).

AT&T and Verizon have various reasons for wanting their DSL services to die off, including the fact that newer LTE technology is cheaper to deploy in rural areas and easier to keep upgraded. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam recently told investors:

“Every place we have FiOS, we are going to kill the copper,” Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam recently told attendees of an investor conference. “We are going to just take it out of service. Areas that are more rural and more sparsely populated, we have got LTE built that will handle all of those services and so we are going to cut the copper off there.”

Verizon wants these rural areas to end their DSL plans and instead sell those users LTE services with a high price point ($15 per gigabyte overages). Verizon then hopes to sell those users data-eating video services via their Redbox streaming video joint venture. In some cases, Verizon simply refuses to fix broken landline issues.

Currently in Alabama, some are just starting to realize the actual effects that are about to come from the so-called AT&T transition. As the Wall Street Journal reports, AT&T customers may eventually have to switch to wireless or high-speed service while new customers wouldn’t be allowed to sign up for traditional, landline-based service at all. But Carbon Hill City Clerk Janice Pendley says some people in the former mining town are apprehensive:

“Some of them like their landline, and they like it just the way it is,” she says.

AT&T says no one will lose old-fashioned phone service until the carrier proves it can provide those customers with an alternative. AT&T is seeking approval to kill off any new customers in Carbon Hill and a section of Delray Beach, Fla., to sign up for traditional, landline-based service.

Yet, AT&T comes off as laughably unprepared for this initial challenge. In Carbon Hill, 4% of their residential customers are too far from the center of the city and therefore can’t get the broadband service being offered by AT&T. How does AT&T plan on dealing with this? We don’t know….they won’t tell us.

In Delray Beach, over 50% of the population is over 65 years old. How is AT&T going to deal with this since these people are generally the last group to make technological changes? Again, we have no idea as AT&T won’t tell us.

Verizon and AT&T say keeping the old technology is going to cost them billions of dollars a year, even as more customers abandon it. AT&T says the transition will create faster, cheaper networks that speed creation of improved high-definition voice and video calling. As we saw with Verizon after Hurricane Sandy, terminating POTS and DSL services and then just hoping wireless fills the gaps can have terrible drawbacks:

(Bill Wayland) wants to keep the landline phone in his Chesterfield Township home. He can’t get service on his cell phone in the workshop in his basement and said he often loses calls when he uses his cell phone in his office. His 21-year-old disabled son doesn’t have the fine motor skills to use a cell phone, and his security alarm is wired to his landline.

If Verizon and AT&T want to ditch their obligations of landlines after receiving billions and billions of subsidies from taxpayers for those very landlines, why not make these companies actually put their promises of fantastic wireless in writing and force them to stick the promises? Or is that too much to ask?

T-Mobile and AT&T fight over upcoming spectrum auction rules

In 2012, AT&T was desperately trying to convince the public and regulators that if they weren’t allowed to buy T-Mobile, they’d face an absolute spectrum catastrophe, would be unable to deploy next-generation wireless services, and would have to scale back network investment substantially. A year later, AT&T had a change of heart. After pulling off nearly forty spectrum deals in the previous 12 months, AT&T’s CFO John Stephens told investors that AT&T had enough spectrum to last the next five years. From CNET:

“We have a satisfactory spectrum position for the next five years,” Stephens said during a presentation at a Morgan Stanley investor conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. “At the same time, we continue to encourage the government to make more spectrum available. And the reason is that it takes a long time to get spectrum to market. It’s a constant process.”

Basically, AT&T has admitted that they fabricated their own “spectrum crisis” but still want more from the government. 

Now, T-Mobile is asking that next year’s auction of 600 MHz broadcast spectrum have ”set-asides,” or portions of the spectrum that would be specifically set aside for smaller or new entrants. T-Mobile’s basic argument is that AT&T and Verizon will run the table and buy all available spectrum. Back in April of 2013, the Department of Justice warned the FCC that they should potentially cap the amount of spectrum AT&T and Verizon can acquire moving forward to prevent the two companies from hoarding spectrum anti-competitively.

“Today, the two leading carriers have the vast majority of low-frequency spectrum, whereas the two other nationwide carriers have virtually none,” wrote the DOJ. “This results in the two smaller nationwide carriers having a somewhat diminished ability to compete, particularly in rural areas where the cost to build out coverage is higher with high-frequency spectrum.”

AT&T responded to the DOJ by claiming that it would be unlawful to stop them from hoarding the spectrum. Speaking of lawful, does AT&T really want to go down that path? AT&T has a long history of over-emphasizing capacity and spectrum constraints in order to get what they want from regulators and politicians. Capacity was the primary justification for the company’s decision to impose overage penalties on DSL users, despite no evidence that their networks experience any actual congestion.

Verizon is on record saying they have so much spectrum that neither refarming 3G spectrum or Wi-Fi offloading are priorities for them. Responding to concerns by the DOJ that maybe AT&T and Verizon’s spectrum buys moving forward should be capped so they can’t hoard spectrum anti-competitively, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo today promised they’d certainly never consider such a thing:

“These rules could cause an auction to fail,” warned Shammo on the call. Verizon shouldn’t be penalized by spectrum rules, he said, because the operator isn’t one to buy spectrum just to sit on it and keep competitors from using it, otherwise known as spectrum hoarding. “Verizon has never purchased spectrum to do that. We buy spectrum to use it,” Shammo declared.

So, basically they want us to trust them. While AT&T and Verizon certainly need spectrum and there is an argument to be made about there being an inefficient use of existing spectrum, the argument that there is a crisis helps both companies buy as much as their bank accounts allow all the while reducing the chances of an actual competitive market.

AT&T Exec Calls Netflix’s Reed Hastings “Arrogant” For Net Neutrality Post

AT&T just turned the high-stakes debate between Netflix and telecommunications companies into a name-calling food fight. AT&T Senior Executive Vice President of Legislative Affairs, James Cicconi, slammed Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, as “arrogant” for his support of stronger net neutrality laws.

Earlier this week, Hastings penned a strongly worded post calling for stronger federal support of laws that prevent Internet service providers from charging more for high-bandwidth services.

“Netflix believes strong net neutrality is critical, but in the near term we will in cases pay the toll to the powerful ISPs to protect our consumer experience. When we do so, we don’t pay for priority access against competitors, just for interconnection,” he wrote, in relation to the ongoing debate over the future of net neutrality and paid agreements between Netflix and Comcast.

Hastings argued that Netflix is taking up more global Internet bandwidth because it’s popular. His service is “satisfying requests made by ISP customers who pay a lot of money for high-speed Internet. Netflix doesn’t send data unless members request a movie or TV show.” (Hastings also argued a few more other nuanced points, which we covered in more detail here.)

AT&T is, apparently, not happy with the opinion. “As we all know, there is no free lunch, and there’s also no cost-free delivery of streaming movies. Someone has to pay that cost. Mr. Hastings’ arrogant proposition is that everyone else should pay but Netflix. That may be a nice deal if he can get it,” wrote Cicconi [emphasis added].

Specifically, he argues that users are being forced to pay for the infrastructure necessary to carry all the media-heavy bandwidth. In the current structure, the increased cost of building that capacity is ultimately borne by ISP subscribers. “It is a cost of doing business that gets incorporated into Netflix’s subscription rate. In Netflix’s view, that’s unfair,” explained Cicconi. “In its view, those additional costs, caused by Netflix’s increasing subscriber counts and service usage, should be borne by all broadband subscribers – not just those who sign up for and use Netflix service,” concluded Cicconi.

The FCC is currently seeking comment on a new path forward for net neutrality. In the meantime, we expect Netflix will be responding to AT&T soon. And it’ll be up to Netflix whether the debate becomes a name-calling arms race, or whether it goes in a different direction. Your move, Mr. Hastings.

Samsung Galaxy S5 up for pre-order from AT&T starting tomorrow, US Cellular also confirms its plans

AT&T is getting ready to open up pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S5, starting tomorrow. The handset will set consumers back $199 on-contract or $649 outright. For those interested in spreading out the cost via AT&T Next, you also have the option of paying $25 a month via Next 12 or $32.50 through Next 18.

You can pre-order the device both online or in store, with AT&T promising to ship the device sometime in early April — though no exact date has been specified just yet.

As for what the GS5 brings to the table? The Galaxy S5 is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Other specs include 16GB storage, microSD, a 16MP rear camera with ISOCELL technology, 2.1MP front cam, a 2800 mAh battery, and plenty of new features like a fingerprint scanner.

For those interested in getting a wearable device to coincide with your GS5 purchase, AT&T is offering $50 off the Gear 2 or Gear 2 Neo when you buy a Galaxy S5 from AT&T, though the promotion ends June 5th. This brings the pricing down to $250 and $150, respectively.

Anyone planning on pre-ordering through AT&T or another carrier for that matter? Conversely, do you have your heart set on another major Android flagship instead, such as the Sony Xperia Z2 or the all-new HTC One?

Update: Following on the heels of the AT&T announcement, U.S. Cellular also has confirmed the handset will be priced at $199 with contract on their network, after instant rebate. U.S. Cellular will carry the Galaxy S5 in two colors and will include a code that’s good for $50 worth of Google Play purchases. The handset will arrive April 11th, both in stores and online.
