Samsung is the engine of the AMOLED industry, but it’s not the only player developing organic LED technology for mobile devices. Competitors in China and Taiwan especially are making big strides catching up with Samsung, and even beating the Korean giant in some areas.
Taiwan-based AU Optronics just announced the industry’s first Quad HD (WQHD) AMOLED panels for smartphones. The screen packs 2,560 x 1,440 pixels on a 5.7-inch diagonal, resulting in a 513 ppi density. For comparison, the highest density achieved on an AMOLED panel until now was the 440 ppi of the Samsung Galaxy S4.
AU Optronics is showcasing the new panel at a display expo in Shenzhen, but did not specify when it expects to mass produce the new panel or what clients will use it in smartphones.

While there are several Quad HD LCD devices out already, including the Oppo Find 7 and the Vivo Xplay 3, Quad HD AMOLED screens have remained a promise until now. Samsung said it would be releasing a 2,560 x 1,440 panel this year, but rumors that the Galaxy S5 would be the first smartphone employing the technology did not materialize.
