Why use a power saving mode when you can have a power saving phone?

Last week I compared the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8's power saving modes. While I am relatively impressed by both, it's hard to get past the fact that they place some pretty severe limitations on your phone's functionality, for obvious reasons. One that that struck me, particularly about the S5's grayscale mode is that what it is doing is basically attempting to pull off what YotaPhone is already doing with their second e-ink screen.

If you are not yet familiar with Yota Devices, what you need to know is that their phones are built around the idea of an always-on, secondary screen that can, in large part, replace what you normally do on the power-sucking main screen. Because the second display is an e-ink screen, like a Kindle, there are huge savings to be had on your battery life when you don't need to light up an entire LCD or AMOLED display every time you need to do something.

Considering the vast majority of the times we turn our devices on is for no particular reason other than to check if we have anything interesting to see or do there really is no point in lighting up the whole color display just for a look-see. Most of the time these compulsive interactions simply lead to us turning the phone off again after seeing there's nothing much going on after all. But what the YotaPhone allows you to do is casually check notifications from the e-ink screen without placing any impact on your battery or requiring you to even turn your main display on.

Pretty much everything can be pushed to the second screen as it arrives on your device, from email and notifications, to RSS feeds and social media streams. You can use it to store maps or directions, plane tickets, timetables, a photograph of your dog or spouse, a shopping list or any other kind of reminder you want to be passively in your face throughout the day, even if your battery dies. If you like to read on your smartphone, and I mean read anything, this is exactly the thing you've been waiting for.

Which brings me to the point of this article. With the demands that power-hungry displays, even more so now in the era of 2K displays, place on our batteries, we really need to start rethinking the way we use our smartphones. Combined with no major innovations on the battery chemistry front, our power needs are soon going to surpass what our batteries are capable of. The one gripe we hear consistently (and endlessly) is battery life. Sure, the Galaxy S5's power-saving algorithms from LucidLogix have already proven to be worth their weight in gold, but they are still a Band-Aid over a deeper issue: the way we use our phones and how much that impacts on our batteries.

As we become more and more dependant on our portable devices and place increasing pressure on their ability to last throughout a day or more, something needs to drastically change. The days of casually turning on your display every fifteen minutes ''just to check'' need to come to an end. The problem is, they won't. And why should they? Our smartphones are our loyal sidekicks, and no one wants you to start ignoring them just to save on battery juice. Even if there's some great battery cases available and other ways to save on battery consumption, these are not solutions for everyone.

What the YotaPhone represents is nothing less than the turning of a corner. With a YotaPhone you don't need to radically alter the amount of attention you give to your phone or resist the urge to see what's happening throughout the day just so your dark-screened phone can make it to bedtime. That would be foolish. Instead, all you need to do is turn your phone over to stay up to speed without affecting your battery, only turning on that full color main screen when it is actually necessary. The only thing you need to do differently is learn to read in black and white. You know, how you always have.

Having said that, YotaPhone has a long way to go. The idea is sound and the implementation is actually really good. Sure, the first generation YotaPhone has taken so long to come to market that its 2013 mid-range specs aren't going to capture everyone's attention, but the second generation, coming later this year, is something to marvel at. So much so it received a lot of special attention at Mobile World Congress and for good reason – it truly looks like the maturation of the initial proof of concept that the first generation is.

The slightly awkward blocky shape of the first generation has been replaced with smooth edges and nice curves. The rear screen is fully touch responsive and perfectly embedded in the rear of the device, so much so that if it is black you can't even tell there's a screen there. And the specs we're expecting to see are definitely this year's. The first generation may be a bit of a boutique item for the hardcore readers out there or gadget-obsessed geeks like myself, but the second generation – if it hits the market in a timely fashion – should open the floodgates to a revolution in how we think about power saving. Why have a power saving mode when you can have a power saving phone?

Galaxy S5 vs HTC One M8: power saving modes

The Galaxy S5 feature that most impressed me in Barcelona was the Ultra Battery Saving Mode which reportedly gets you 24 hours of usage on just 10% battery life. I said it wouldn't be long before you saw the same thing on other devices and then the HTC One M8 came along with its Extreme Power Saving Mode which should get you 15 hours battery life on just 5% battery. So which one is better?

Both power saving modes take advantage of roughly the same features: limiting CPU usage, switching off haptic feedback and vibration, limiting background data, disabling data when the screen is turned off, limiting available apps and dropping screen brightness or color range.

Hardware basics

The key difference between the two modes is actually hardware dependent: the Galaxy S5 has a Super AMOLED display while the One M8 has an LCD screen. AMOLED displays are pretty terrible in sunlight but they do have the advantage of generally being more battery friendly because pixels are only illuminated when they are colored. If your screen is mostly black then you're not using many pixels. LCD's, on the other hand, perform better outside but have to illuminate all pixels when the screen is on, even the black ones. Not surprisingly, the Galaxy S5 takes advantage of the power-saving effects of grayscale whereas the HTC One M8 power saving mode still uses color.

Access and implementation

Both power-saving modes are easily accessible from within the settings menu of each device. The Galaxy S5 only allows you to manually turn on the Ultra Power Saving Mode (it also features the regular power saving mode with restricted background data, limited CPU usage and grayscale options). Once switched on, the Galaxy S5 will take a little while to enable the mode and drop you to grayscale with limited app availability. Switching the mode off also takes a while.

The HTC One M8's Extreme Power Saving Mode, on the other hand, is lightning fast to enable and is equally simple to turn on and off. The big difference here is that besides being able to manually start and stop the mode, you can also program it to engage automatically when your battery life reaches a certain point, either 5%, 10% or 20% remaining. This is a big win in my opinion for the HTC. Like the S5, the One M8 also features a regular power saving mode as well. In terms of access and implementation I'd pick HTC as the winner for its speed and programmability.

Functionality and convenience

Functionally speaking, there's not a huge difference between the two modes, but what there is might make a big difference depending on what you're expecting. Both modes offer the usual dialing and text messaging functions, but the One M8 only has en email feature, whereas the S5 has full internet access (albeit in grayscale). Both modes have a couple of rather useless apps in their power saving mode like the calculator and calendar or clock, but the big difference here is that the S5 has two programmable extra spots for user-defined apps in Ultra Power Saving Mode. The list is short, but it's there.

The Galaxy S5 has the following apps as standard in Ultra Power Saving Mode: Phone, Messages, Internet and Clock, with the following options for the additional two spots: Calculator, ChatON, Google+, Memo and Voice Recorder. Perhaps not the most useful apps, but having access to Google+ and the full internet in a power saving mode is a huge bonus to me. The HTC One M8 has the following default apps available (with no alternative choices): Phone, Messages, Mail, Calendar and Calculator. If a power saving mode is important to you and something you imagine using regularly, you really need to weigh up what you need access to in a power saving mode. I think the S5 is the clear winner here.

Look and feel

Both modes are very similar and are even laid out very similarly. The main difference is that the Galaxy S5 drops to grayscale in Ultra Power Saving Mode and the HTC One M8 sticks with color. This makes the HTC's power saving mode much less of a noticeable change. Because the apps look generally the same you don't get the feeling that you've entered some restricted emergency mode like you do on the Galaxy S5. It's really up to personal preference, but I prefer the customization and additional functionality of the S5, but I like the look and feel of the HTC better. The S5 also seems to be a little more embedded within the wider system too – evident in the fact that you can still access a limited settings menu and Quick Notifications. This one's hard to pick a winner on.

Final thoughts

The programmable Extreme Power Saving Mode on the HTC One M8 and the consistent feel of the mode compared to the regular usage of the device is a nice bonus for me. I also really like just how quickly the power saving mode turns on and off. However, the M8's mode is a little limited in my opinion with no options other than what HTC has provided. I really like the integration of the Galaxy S5's Ultra Power Saving Mode and the programmable app options, although the amount of time it takes to start and stop and the lack of an ''automatically engage'' feature is something I hope Samsung fix with a software update. Without enough time to fully test the battery times of both modes yet I can't peg a real winner, but at first glance I'm leaning towards the S5.

HTC One (M8) gets an update on Sprint’s network, gets Extreme Power Saving Mode

When the HTC One (M8) was officially unveiled last month, we learned that the M8 was bringing a whole lot more than just refined looks and improved hardware. Pulling the entire experience together was Sense 6.0, which included a laundry list of improvements over Sense 5.5. One of these promised features was an Extreme Power Saving Mode, though unfortunately the feature wasn’t ready for prime-time at the handset’s launch.

HTC promised the power saving mode would arrive a bit later through a carrier update, and for Sprint customers that day is today. For those that aren’t sure exactly what the Extreme Power Saving Mode is all about, basically it is designed for situations where you are very low on power but still need your device on for emergency calling and other purposes.

The power saving mode turns off your ‘smart’ functionality, giving you a basic homescreen with a phone dialer, text messaging, calculator, calendar and HTC email. The impressive thing about this mode, however, is that HTC claims it can yield 15 hours of use on just 5 percent battery.

Anything else new in today’s Sprint update? Not much from the sounds of it, with the change-log simply saying that the update offers “stability and call performance improvements”. Still, it’s great to see HTC working quickly to rollout the promised Power Saving Mode, and here’s to hoping other major U.S. carriers follow in short order.

Many of us have some kind of plan in place to save money. With all the names and schemes we give them—401(k), Roth IRA, retirement fund, etc.—it's easy to forget that most of our long-term savings have one goal in mind: to buy us time.

As finance blog Work To Not Work points out, most of our savings goals are to buy us time later. Not just retirement, either! When you save up to go on vacation, your goal is that you will be able to spend the money without having to pay back that time with more work:

The way that I view it, I don't own my time, and that is the most important thing to me. Money is a way for me to acquire my own time. Right now, my time has to be spent making money so that when I do take vacations or want to do something I can afford to take that time off of work. Once I reach financial independence, I will have successfully bought my time for a price I deemed fair, I am then free to spend my time on whatever I want to do with it. If I die with a lot of extra money and a few extra decades of being able to choose what I wanted to do, instead of working at a job. Then I think I'd be happy with that.

...I think it's fun to know how much an hour of my time will cost me. Knowing that I just put $2,000 into savings equals over 3 weeks (17.3 business days) of retirement seems like a great measuring stick to me.

It might not be that functionally different from what we do now, but knowing the reason we save can help us keep the motivation up. The practical way to try it out would be to calculate how much time your monthly savings buys you in the future. Then, instead of "saving" $100, you can say you're "buying" a few hours of time of not working in the future.
