Android TV: what you need to know

Putting down roots in Berlin after six years of traveling is a major step for Kris Carlon, who has spent more time living out of a tent lately than sitting at a desk. Kris comes to the AndroidPIT Editorial Team via a lengthy period spent writing on art and culture in Australia and other places he has lived. He joined the Android community while resurfacing in civilization back in 2010 and has never looked back, using technology to replace his actual presence in other people's lives ever since.

Over the weekend The Verge broke the story of the Android TV leak. Google's retake on the living room platform comes hot on the heels of the launch of Amazon's Fire TV and may sound suspiciously familiar to those of you who remember Google TV. Where Google's latest offering differs from its predecessor is that it is not a new computing platform but rather an entertainment delivery interface, much like Fire TV and Apple TV. As the name suggests, it is powered by Android (which, incidentally, also ran Google TV).

Android TV is basically a delivery system for web and app content accessible on your smartphone. All of your favorite smartphone content will be available: movies, apps, games, and you'll have access to all of the usual suspects like Hulu, Netflix, Pandora and the like. Google is trying to get developers to build very simple TV-optimized apps for the new format, and considering its simplicity, this looks like it will happen quite quickly.

While Android is still running the show, it is more of a convenience than a core component. Navigating the menus will be much the same as anything else you do on your existing TV. Using a d-pad controller on the remote, you scroll left and right through thumb-nailed images of the content you have in each category and up and down to access different categories. For gamers, there's optional game controllers as well and all content will be synced to and from your smartphone, so you can start content on a mobile device and pick up where you left on on your Android TV.

Google's focus will be on proactively pushing content to you, based on your viewing and playing habits, in much the same way that Google and Google Now do this already. Voice commands and notifications are also possible, but are far from central. Google's emphasis really seems to be on pushing intuitive content as quickly and easily as possible. While search is still possible, it seems like a secondary delivery method to Google's automated suggestions. Google claims no content should take more than three clicks from the home screen and they're giving developers simple design guidelines to follow to make it happen.

You may be wondering why you would invest in Android TV when you already have the Chromecast, which does a very similar job of casting smartphone content to your TV. The difference is the same as that between an app that was designed for a smartphone being pushed to the tablet format versus a tablet-optimized app. While Android TV pulls smartphone content to your TV, the aim is to have it optimized for the format rather than just blown up from a smartphone app.

It is as yet unclear as to whether Google will produce the hardware themselves or partner with a manufacturer. Considering Google's power on this front it seems likely that they would be able to entice any number of manufacturers to partner with, barring those like LG who are already committed to shipping their webOS on new TVs and Philips who are also bringing Android to TV. If Google makes Android TV itself, we may be stuck with a good platform in a poor product. But if anyone can squeeze out other platforms, it's Google, so keep an eye on Android TV, because it may well be coming to a living room near you very soon.
