WhatsApp voice calling News update 2014
Final week the net was ablaze with speak about Fb’s $19 billion acquisition of the WhatsApp messaging app. At the time of the announcement Fb acknowledged that WhatsApp would continue to run (principally) independently, and it wouldn’t merely be integrated into the Fb Messenger. In fact, that didn’t imply Fb didn’t have plans to vary up the features offered by WhatsApp.
At MWC 2014 WhatsApp’s CEO Jan Koum announced that a pretty big change is in fact heading our way with the addition of voice calling for iOS and Android users during the 2nd quarter of this year. Reportedly the feature will also head to Windows Phone and Blackberry, but not until sometime later this year.
While all the details about voice calling aren’t known just yet, the service is said to be free, though it’s uncertain if this is for a limited time or not. More than likely, the voice calling will start free and eventually be subject to the same $.99 per year subscription fee that is imposed on regular WhatsApp users — but that’s just speculation on our part.
In addition to revealing its plan to introduce voice calling, WhatsApp also announced that its active user count has now reached 465 million monthly users, and 330 million daily users. For those keeping score, that’s 15 million more active users than Facebook is bringing in right now.
