Oppo Find 7 vs Find 5 quick look

The Oppo Find 7 was officially announced a few days ago, and once again, the Chinese company has managed to set the standard for future Android smartphones, at least with regards to the display. Whenever a new device in a series is released, it’s always interesting to see how much of an upgrade it is from its predecessor, in this case, the Find 5. Here’s our quick look at the Oppo Find 7 vs Find 5!

Design

With clean lines and angular corners, the design aesthetic of both the Find 7 and Find 5 are quite similar. That being said, the design language is even further refined with the Find 7, with a more understated look with fewer accents, especially in the black version of the device that we got our hands on.

The bigger display size of the Find 7 results in a larger foot print, but the difference between the two smartphones isn’t as significant as you’d expect, with Oppo greatly reducing the bezel thickness on the Find 7. At its thickest point, the Find 7 is also slightly thicker than its predecessor, most likely because of it housing a comparatively larger battery.

Overall, you have two devices that boast a premium feel. Even if the shell on the Find 7 is plastic rather than metal, the build quality is really nice, and even the larger screen size should be quite easy to get used to.

Display

The Find 5 was a leader in terms of display quality by being one of the first devices to feature a 1080p screen, and Oppo continues this trend with the Find 7, which one of the very few smartphones to boast a display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, resulting in a whopping pixel density of 538 ppi.

Of course, pixels aren’t visible on the display of the Find 5, but the extra density and sharpness found on the Find 7 is definitely noticeable. Viewing angles are great on both IPS LCD screens, and colors pop. It has to be mentioned that the Find 7 we used was a pre-production unit with a display that was not properly calibrated, so the screen on the commercially available units should be even better.

Performance and Hardware

It’s not only the display that is a standout feature of the Oppo Find 7, with the rest of the hardware also the latest and greatest that is currently available. Featuring an quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM, the phone flies through everyday tasks, and will not be found lacking in performance when it comes to graphic intensive games as well. The same processing package can be found with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2, putting the Oppo Find 7 in what is very select company as of now.

In the opposite corner, the Oppo Find 5 is clearly showing its age. While the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor is no slouch, it is more than a year old, which feels like an eternity in the fast-paced world of smartphone technology. However, helped by 2 GB of RAM, this processing package still does a great job in most situations.

The differences between the two smartphones continue with the welcome inclusion of expandable memory with the Find 7, which also supports the recently launched 128 GB microSD cards. The battery also gets a nice bump to 3,000 mAh, compared to the 2,500 mAh unit of the Find 5, but real world battery performance might still not vary significantly, due in part to the demanding Quad HD display of the Find 7. The good news is that the Find 7 features a fast charging technology that allows you to charge the device from 0 to 75 percent in just 30 minutes.

Camera

The rear camera of the Find 7 includes a 13 MP Sony Exmor RS sensor, coupled with a lens composed of six pieces, which should minimize distortion, while still offering a great 2.0 aperture. The Find 7 also comes with a ton of camera software features, the most interesting of which is called Super Zoom, that takes ten images and stitches them together to create one 50 MP image with extra detail. The front camera is also impressive, being a 5 MP shooter with an 80 degree field of view.

The Find 5 also packs a 13 MP rear shooter that we found to be a very able performer, but it does come with fewer software features, and has an overall image quality that is a generation behind.

Software

While the two smartphones may run Oppo’s Color OS, there is a significant difference between the two versions, both in terms of design and functionality.

The user interface of the Find 7 is more ethereal and stylish, the same as what was first released with the Oppo N1, compared to the bubbly, colorful nature of the UI found on the Find 5. Based on Android 4.3, the Find 7 also comes with a lot useful additions, such as gesture based application shortcuts that work even when the screen is turned off, and is generally a lot more functional.

While still a significant improvement from the Find 5, the upcoming release of Color OS 2.0 should make things even better on the Find 7.

Conclusion at a glance

The Oppo Find 7 introduces a lot of significant changes and enhancements over the Find 5, in terms of both hardware and software, and is exactly what a successor should be. With its high-end specifications, and fantastic Quad HD display, the Oppo Find 7 is definitely a breakout device, much the same as the Find 5 was before it.
